Year 2001/2002 - Mississippi's Top Prep Senior Baseball Players


This very tentative list consists of some of the best baseball players in Mississippi. If you know of any Division-I caliber players from your area that I have not included on my list, let me know about them.

PITCHERS
Pete Atwood - 6-1, 190, Kosciusko HS. Also is an infielder. Clocked at 89 mph.
Tyler Brown - 6-1, 185, Northwest Rankin HS. Throws fastball in the mid-80's. Has a very good slider. His junior year struck out 52 in 44 innings.
Clay Dirks - 6-3, 210, Hernando HS. Best player in the state according to a MLB scout.
Cam Ferguson - 6-0, 185, Senatobia HS.
Johnathan Miller - Canton Academy.
Christopher Rayborn - 6-3, 175, Adams County Christian School.
Blake Richardson - 6-2, 195, Southaven HS. Throws in the 85-86 mph range. Also throws a slider and change.
Jade Roberts - 6-1, 220, Wayne County HS. Earned District 5-5A honorable mention as a sophomore. Mid to upper 80's fastball.
Thomas Royals 6-1, 180, Lumberton HS. First-team All-State as a junior. 1.60 ERA with 99 K's in 74 innings. Throws in the mid-80's. Reaches in the high-80's at times.
Carl Upton - 6-3, 230, Warren Central HS.
Brae Wright - 6-4, 180, Southaven HS. Throws fastball in the mid-80's.
Luke Yeatman - 6-3, 195, Heritage Academy. Throws in the 82-84 mph range. A very young senior who turned 17 in July of 2001.

CATCHERS
Bo Baxter - 6-3, 225, Tupelo HS. Also plays fullback for the football team. Ole Miss and Delta State are showing interest in him.
Eddie Burger - 6-2, 190, Long Beach HS. Also plays QB.
Thomas Garland - 5-11, 170, Copiah Academy.
William Lindley - 5-10, 190, Jackson Prep. Started as a 10th grader. Good arm strength as evidenced by his 1.9 / 2.0 secs. home to second base throws. Also has good accuracy. Developing good defensive skills and shows potential at the plate.
Chris Romano - 6-1, 195, Gulfport HS. Throws down to second base in the 2.0 second range. Good hitter.
Dooley Simmons - 6-1, 180, Parklane Academy. Very good hitter who hits for average and power. Above average arm.
Kevin Terrell - 6-2, 210, Southaven HS.
Miller Todd - Canton Academy.
Brett Wilson - 6-0, 185, Wayne County HS. Earned honorable mention in district 5-5A as a sophomore.

INFIELDERS
Kevin Caldwell - 6-7, 225, Tupelo HS. Hit .510 as a junior.
Gary-Scott Gabbert - 5-9, 160, Southaven HS.
Ben Goza - 6-3, 230, Brookhaven HS. Plays first base. Excellent power hitter. A starter since his freshman year.
Brian Hayes - 5-10, 190, Magee HS. Plays third base. Has started since his freshman year. Batted .360 last year while hitting 8 home runs. Also plays QB for Magee.
Stephen Head - 6-3, 205, Hillcrest Christian School. Plays 1B and pitches. His fastball has been clocked at 87-88 mph.
Tucker Jennings - 5-10, 160, Cleveland HS. Plays SS and also pitches.
Joey Lieberman - Warren Central HS (Vicksburg). Plays SS.
John Moran - 6-3, 185, Southaven HS.
David Nanney - Oak Hill Academy (West Point). Plays shortstop.
Van Pope - 6-1, 170, Terry HS. Very smooth shortstop. Above average arm. Spray hitter. Also pitches with a fastball in the upper 80's and an outstanding slider. All schools in Mississippi high on him.
Wesley Radicioni - 6-0, 170, Cleveland HS. Plays 3B and 1B.
Andrew Rohlfs - 6-0, 185, Horn Lake HS.
Kendard Springer - 6-0, 210, Nettleton HS. 6.8 sixty. Hits with power. Plays third base.
Greg White - 5-6, 150, Cleveland HS. Plays SS, OF and pitches. Very fast runner who ran a 4.4 at this summer's (2001) Brewer tryout camp and also a 6.6 in the sixty at State Games tryouts last summer (2000).

OUTFIELDERS
J. J. Brown - 6-0, 180, Vicksburg HS.
Corey Carter - 6-3, 205, West Point HS. Considered one of the top players in the nation by Baseball America.
John Morgan Mims - Warren Central HS.
Brian Pettway - 6-0, 180, Warren Central HS.
Armando Talavera - 6-1, 180, Gulfport HS. Runs a 6.7 sixty.
