January 2000 Mississippi High School All-Sports Skuttle-Butt

If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

01/22/00 - South Pike HS has a junior offensive lineman who is known by quite a few recruiters but not many folks outside of the South Pike. His name is Cornelius Stallings and he is 6-4, 305-lbs and runs the forty in the 5.0 range. From what I was told he is a very nice youngster and excellent student. According to my source, his dad is former Southern Miss football player Robert Ray Stallings. Cornelius is already receiving quite a few letters from colleges.

01/20/00 - Thought you guys would like an update on a player that I mentioned this past December. According to a source of mind. Olive Branch HS sophomore lineman (OL/DL) Michael Evans is presently on the power-lifting team at Olive Branch. During his first meet last week, he benched around 300 pounds. He also squats and deadlifts in the 625 range. P.S. He was high scorer for the meet.

01/19/00 - Pascagoula High School (PHS) player tidbit:

Dontae Slaughter, who is a sophomore, plays offensive tackle/defensive end for PHS. He is approximately 6-3, 248-lbs and runs a 5.0 forty. According to my source, he is also an excellent student.

01/19/00 - Winston Academy players tidbit:

Taylor McNeel is a junior quarterback who is 6-1, 180-lbs. In leading his team to their third straight championship, he threw for over 1,200 yards and rushed for over 1,600 yards this past season. My source also said another WA player to watch is freshman Lenny Boatner. Lenny had 600 yards receiving and close to 400 yards rushing. He also scored three touchdowns in the state championship game. He has 4.6 speed and great jumping ability (he is 5-10 and can dunk a volleyball).

01/17/00 - It's not too early to talk about next season's recruiting. One of the better junior running backs in the state is considering committing to Ole Miss prior to the start of next season. His name is Isiah Martin and he plays for Harrison Central HS. Isiah, who had 900 all-purpose yards this past season, will also be playing on the defense as a safety next season. During his sophomore year, Isiah played safety. In fact, he led his team in interceptions that year. The word is Isiah is currently receiving letters from Ole Miss, Alabama and LSU.

01/12/00 - I had the pleasure of attending the Tupelo HS / Columbus HS basketball game last night. 3rd ranked Columbus defeated the 6th ranked Tupelo Golden Wave 67 to 63. During the last couple of minutes, Columbus HS players Cadarrall Eddings and Charles Braxton made 7 of 8 free throws to ice the win for Columbus. One other note: Columbus HS has three sophomores that bear watching. They are guards 6-2 Anthony Johnson (started) and 5-7 Josea Butler and 6-7 forward/center Marcus Verner (started).

01/10/00 - A source of mine told me that Perry Central has two running backs, brothers Edward and Ervin McCoy, that have a great deal of talent. Edward is a 6-foot-3, 230-lb junior bruising back who made 2-A All-State as a defensive end. Ervin is a 5-foot-11, 205-lb sophomore scat back that runs much larger than his size. This past season, they shared time in the backfield where they both rushed for over 800 yards each behind an undersized line. My source went on to say that these two youngsters come from a family where their mother won't allow them to play football if they make a C or less on their report cards. If they continue to work hard and improve, it sounds like they have a chance to be solid additions to a college program.

01/03/00 - Mize HS has a sophomore running back/defensive back who has a chance to be a D-I prospect. His name is Joey Sullivan and he is 5-11, 180-lbs. Joey, who has started since his freshman year, is also an excellent baseball player.

01/01/00 - Sleeper recruit: Adam Cook, senior tight end, 6-4, 230-lbs, Warren Central High, Vicksburg. Has exceptional hands. Decent Speed. Blocking improved greatly over the season, Excellent student with a very high ACT score. Has a brother, Billy Cook, at MSU. Has solid scholarship offers from several small schools and is receiving interest from a few 1-A schools.

01/01/00 - From a source of mine, Clarksdale HS players to watch (all juniors this year):

  • Chris Liddell - Running back (RB), 4.56 speed, 5-9 185, benches 275.
  • Chris Beasley - RB, 5-9,190, runs very, very hard.
  • Aaron Weddington - RB, 5-8 170, runs a 4.45 40, and has very quick feet.
  • Marvin Young - Wide receiver (WR), 6-2,187, has great hands and nice speed.
  • Danelle Hampton - WR, 5-7,160, has better hands, speed, and quickness.
  • Darren Williams - WR, 6-3,200, superb hands, and very physical, and starts at safety. Despite size and physicalness, he is a great athlete who is versatile.
