February 2000 Mississippi High School All-Sports Skuttle-Butt

If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

Do you have info you want to share? Here are the different ways you can send it to me.

Lionel, who is 6-2, 265-lbs, was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Pascagoula Gridiron Club due to his play against Moss Point HS this past season. Brookhaven lost the first game 4-2 to Warren Central before dropping a 14-9 slugfest to Madison Central. Senior Panther Chris Bale looked outstanding in a one-run, seven-hit, complete game loss against the highly thought of Warren Central baseball team. Co-Lin signee Arlandus Brown homered for Brookhaven.

Brookhaven's Fred Perkins had 2 singles and a stolen base against Madison Central. Daniel Boyd had 2 hits and 2 RBI'S and Cayce Wallace drove in 2 runs.

The Panthers play their home opener Tuesday night against 5A opponent Natchez. Brookhaven continues their tough early season schedule later this week when they compete in the Central Mississippi Classic. Thursday the Panthers play Brandon. Friday finds the Panthers traveling to Pearl to take on the Pirates. Saturday Brookhaven will travel to NW Rankin to play Yazoo City.

02/22/00 - West Point HS opened the season with a 2-0 start at the Starkville tournament this past weekend. They opened the season Friday night against Starkville but due to a rain-delay the game was completed Saturday with WPHS winning 12-1 in 5 innings. Walt Bounds hit 2 home runs and threw a no-hitter.

After the Starkville game, West Point played Newton County High School and defeated them 14-6 behind the home run power of Walt Bounds, Corey Carter, and Wesley Williams. This tournament looks to be on of the best high school tournaments in the state this year. This year's tournament field has 13 high schools including Pearl, Northwest Rankin, Brandon, Madison Central, Tupelo, Warren Central, Kosciusko, Starkville, Brookhaven, West Lauderdale, Canton, Yazoo City, and Murrah.

Tupelo with Mississippi State baseball signees Reed Hawkins and Jonathon Bell take on the nationally ranked Warren Central Vikings at 11:00 Saturday at Pearl's Pirate Park located on the campus of Pearl High School.

02/16/00 - Ripley HS has a junior baseball player that bears watching over the next two years. His name is Clint Jordan. Clint, who plays centerfield, is about 5-11 and 175-lbs. According to my source, he is a tremendous athlete that can run anything down in the outfield. He has a very good glove, a strong arm, excellent speed (6.7 time in the 60, 3.2 seconds to first base) and is a good hitter.

02/16/00 - According to a source of mine, Mercy Cross HS, which is located in Biloxi, has two junior baseball players that should get some interest from the scouts during the next two years.

Junior Buddy Pellegrino (5-9, 180-lbs) is a 4-year starter at second base, has a .375 high school career batting average, led MC in hitting as an 8th grader (.423) and also in the 9th grade during the 2A state playoffs (.429) when MC finished runner-up to Nettleton for the 1998 2A MHSAA state championship. Pellegrino also made the 1999 Sun Herald All-Coast Football First team as a defensive back, an honorable mention selection in 1998 and is a standout on the Crusaders soccer championship team that won state in 1999 and finished as state runner-up in 2000.

Junior Nick Moody (5-11, 175-lbs) is a 3-year starter at shortstop, has a .330 high school career batting average and also is a starting pitcher. Moody also made the Sun Herald All-Coast football team as a honorable selection at Quarterback and as a DB in 1998.

02/15/00 - According to a source of mine, Mize HS has two outstanding baseball players who are four-year starters. They are:

Matt McAlpin - Senior, 6-3, 200-lbs., P/C/SS. His 1999 stats - .500 avg., 100 K's in 66.1 innings pitched.
Jared White - Senior, 6-0, 215-lbs., P/C/3B. His 1999 stats - .495 avg., led team with 10 saves but will be a starter this year.

My source told me that both are being looked at by numerous colleges and pro scouts.

02/13/00 - Here are names and stats for three players from Noxapater HS who a source of mine told me are possible D-I prospects. One, Scott Shurden, has previously been on my page.

J.E. Haynes - Junior, plays middle linebacker, led team in tackles with 110.
Corey Moore - Junior, plays defensive end, led the team in sacks with 25.
Scott Shurden - Sophomore, has the Mississippi single-season for field goal made. Although I haven't confirmed this, my source also said that Scott is 2nd in the nation for field goals made in one year.

02/12/00 - According to one of you, here is a team to watch this baseball season.

West Point HS kicks off their season next Friday against Starkville. West Point should be a strong contender for the 4A title this year partly due to a strong pitching staff consisting of seniors Walt Bounds and Ben Earnest, and junior Brent Walker. It is rumored that Walt Bounds is being recruited by Meridian Community College and Mississippi State, among others. Ben Earnest, who had a hand injury his junior year, is hoping to make a solid comeback this season. Bounds and Earnest had good summers while helping the Bryan Packers to a state championship in legion ball.

02/12/00 - Tupelo HS has a 6-4 sophomore forward who is a player to watch over the next two plus years. Braxton Robins is a very solid player who very recently had a good game against Starkville. He scored 18 points according to my source.

02/11/00 - Watch this youngster in the future. Brandon HS has a sophomore running back by the name of Jerious Norwood who has a lot of potential. During his sophomore years he rushed for over 1,000 yards. Jerious, at the beginning of the season was 6-1 and weighed 180-lbs.

02/09/00 - According to a source of mine, Starkville High's Jeremy Milons (Junior, 5-11, 175) is poised for a breakout year as an outfielder. He runs in the 6.7 sixty neighborhood and may be faster when he's rounding the bases. My source also said that he's got a real quick bat and generates good power. He can run down anything hit in the air and he has a decent arm. SHS has some other good ones including Josh Abraham, for sure.

02/04/00 - Here is a little player info from a source of mine. Caledonia HS has a youngster who has a chance to be a solid prospect his senior year if he continues to develop and work hard. His name is Dusty Goley. Dusty, who is presently a sophomore, is a 5-11, 230-lb OL/LB. He squats 385-lbs, benches 285 (225-lbs 10 times), dead lifts 425 and runs the forty in 4.9 seconds. He was recently named 2nd team 3A all-division lineman. As a linebacker, he made 137 tackles, 56 solos and 15 sacks.

02/04/00 - Thought you guys would enjoy reading this email.

George County HS baseball prospects: Danny Byrd (5-8, 150-lbs.) (senior) - great all around athlete who works hard and gives 100% each time he steps on the field. One of the top first basemen in the state who can swing the bat well, also one of the fastest guys on the team. Wes Shows (junior) - great speed, led team in batting average as a freshman, has great skills as a centerfielder and tremendous arm strength and great speed. Derek Cochran (sophomore) - size is his greatest asset -- 6-3, 215-lbs -- extreme power with the bat to both sides of the field, first baseman with many skills, great arm strength, decent pitcher, hard worker and willing to give 100% any time he takes the field. He has good speed for his size and has a 3.4 gpa. Joel Faurot (5-9, 145-lbs) (sophomore) - can play either position in the middle infield. He has great hands, good arm strength, is a decent hitter and has great speed.

02/01/00 - Madison Central will be hosting it's annual invitational powerlifting meet Sat. Feb. 5th at the Madison Central Field House. The meet will begin about 10 am and go until about 4 pm. The teams include: Madison Central, South Panola, Columbus, Vicksburg, Grenada, Quitman, Pearl, Brandon, Meridian, Clinton, and Warren Central.
