03/24/00 - From a source of mine: Matt Anderson has been Pascagoula's ace the past two years. This year he is 6-0 (averaging 12 K's per game), while throwing against the other teams' number ones. According to my source, he throws his fastball in the upper 80's to low 90's. He also throws a change-up and curve. As an outfielder, he is also leading the team in homeruns with 7 and a batting average of .450.
03/23/00 - As we all know, LSU is known for coming into Mississippi and stealing a top football player or two just about every year. Usually the player is from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. However it looks like they may be venturing a little more north this next recruiting season. Why do I say that you ask? The rumor is Chris Spencer, a senior-to-be offensive lineman from Madison Central HS, has already been offered a football scholarship by LSU. Chris, 6-5, 306-lbs, recently broke the Mississippi High School all-time squat record. Chris did the record-breaking 705-lb squat on his third attempt in the South State Powerlifting Meet on March 18th. Chris will again be in action at the Mississippi State Powerlifting Meet on April 14th and 15th at Forest Hill High School.
03/23/00 - J.R. Burks of Clinton H.S., who briefly attended New Hope last year, has had two stellar pitching performances recently. 03/22/00 - Florence HS players update:
03/21/00 - Noxapater HS players update:
Saltillo HS update:
03/18/00 - Junior Righthander Miguel Banks tossed a 3-hit shutout as the Brookhaven Panthers defeated 11th ranked Terry 2-0. This effort followed Chris Bale's outing Tuesday night against Lawrence County. Bale gave up just 2 runs, 3 hits while striking out 7. Neither of the runs were earned in the 4-2 Brookhaven win. The Panthers are now 2-0 in their district and 10-5 overall and have won 9 of their last 11 games.
03/17/00 - After a 1 - 3 start, the Brookhaven Panthers have won 7 of their last 9 to improve their record to 9-5. Four of the five losses have come against ranked opponents. Junior second baseman Daniel Boyd leads the team with a .444 average. Junior outfielder Fred Perkins is hitting .440 and has 9 stolen bases. Co-Lin signee Arlandus Brown is batting .358 with 14 stolen bases. On the mound the Panthers have a team ERA of 2.93 despite having played some of the top teams in the state. James McCall has a 4-1 record with a team leading 1.56 ERA. Despite a 2-3 record, Senior lefty Chris Bale has an ERA of 2.36.
03/17/00 - Chris Smith Update:
From a source of mine: Chris is expected to take over the starting quarterback duties for Gulfport High School next season. As a freshman, Chris led the freshmen team to an 8-1 record and the city championship. As a sophomore, he had surgery on his knee but came back from his injury and backed up Gulfport HS starting quarterback Chad Blaylock, a Delta State signee, last year. My source went on to say that Chris is poised, fast and has a good arm. Chris attended the Florida Gators football camp this past summer and was named the MVP for his age group. The word is Gator head coach Steve Spurrier was impressed and has indicated that he follow his progress over the next two years.
03/16/00
Kyle Easton Update
Kyle, who is a senior at Caledonia HS, pitched a no-hitter against Shannon HS Tuesday night. Kyle is a 6-0, 188-lb RHP who has good grades and throws in the mid- to high-80's range, according to my source.
Chris Smith from Gulfport High School is 6-4, 195-lbs. He recently ran a 4.8 in the 40 and can bench press 220-lbs and squat 300-lbs. Other than I believe he is a sophomore this year, this is about all that I know about him.
03/14/00 - According to a source of mine, Starkville has a couple of players that have a chance to be D-I prospects as they continue to improve:
Both are good kids with a solid work ethic.
03/13/00 - Here is a player to watch this season and next.
Trey White, a 5-10, 200-lb., junior at Porters Chapel Academy in Warren County, plays football, basketball, and baseball.
He has received the following honors in the various sports that he participates in:
Football: All-Conference Tight End as a sophomore. All-Conference Running Back / Quarterback as a Junior. Vicksburg Post All-County Defensive End as a sophomore and junior. Runs a 4.8 to 4.9 forty.
Basketball: All-Conference Point Guard as a sophomore and junior. All-County as a sophomore and junior.
Baseball: All-Conference as a sophomore. All-County as sophomore. He pitches and plays in the field at second base, third base and the outfield. He is currently tied for the lead in Warren County in homeruns after 8 games with 5. Earlier in the year he hit a 440' homerun off of Greenville Christian's ace pitcher. He throws in the mid 80's and also has a curve.
03/08/00 - According to a source of mine, Buddy Pellegrino, a 5-9, 180-lb senior-to-be RB/CB from Biloxi Mercy Cross, has received football letters from USM, Arkansas, Harvard, Memphis, Ala, Auburn, UAB and Villanova. Buddy now benches 285 pounds, squats 400 and deadlifts 440. Buddy, who is also a very good baseball player, is hitting .407 for the Crusaders baseball team through their first 8 games. He has also 5 stolen bases and scored 9 runs.
03/08/00 - Christopher Rayborn, a 6-2, 160-lb. sophomore from Adams County Christian School (Natchez, MS) came into the ballgame against Pine Hills Academy trailing 7-4 Monday night. He pitched 3.1 innings, striking out 7, allowing 1 hit and zero walks to get the win in a 17-7 comeback victory by Adams County Christian School. Trey Mardis, Ryan Davis, Hayden Wadsworth and Landon Burr homered for Adams County.
My source also told me that Christopher played fall baseball with the Mississippi Stars this past fall as a relief pitcher. He had a 1.31 ERA (2nd lowest on the team). According to my source, he has been clocked in the 82-85 mph range and has a great curve ball and change.
03/07/00 - The Noxapater High School baseball team traveled to Philadelphia this past Saturday for a double header with Philadelphia. Noxapater lost the first game 5-2. However, Noxapater came back in the second game and won their first game of the season with a 1-0 victory in the second game. Nijel Young pitched the shutout with the help of a home run by Corey Moore. Noxapater will be playing in the Choctaw Central Spring Tournament this week.
03/05/00 - Here are the names of a couple of excellent football players who play for Hatley HS. The first one is Alex Williams who is a, 6-2, 190-pound, senior-to-be, quarterback with 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash. He was injured most of last year and only played in three games, all early in the season. He still passed for four touchdowns and rushed for eight prior to his injury. He's a very good student and should qualify easily. He has been getting a lot of attention from Harvard but none of the D-I Mississippi schools have shown any interest at the moment. This is most likely due to his injury and them not been able to see him in action. According to my source, he's a great athlete who will probably be defensive back in college. Rafeal Randle, a junior-to-be, 5-10, 225 pound fullback with 4.9 speed in the forty. Rafeal, who squats 500 and benches 320, rushed for over 800 yards this past season even though most defenses keyed on him after Alex went down with his injury. Rafeal is also a good student who will likely be a full qualifier coming out of high school in a couple of years.
03/05/00 - Here is a senior who bears watching this season. Jason Wimberly, who plays for Adams County Christian School which competes in the MPSA Class AAAA Division, pitched against AAA Centreville Academy on March 3rd at Centreville Field. He pitched 5 innings, allowed 3 hits and struck out 7 in a 14-0 win. He has been clocked from 86 to 91 mph, has a good curve, change and split finger to compliment his speed. Jason played for the Mississippi Stars, a team consisting of some of the top Mississippi high school baseball players, this past fall as a pitcher and outfielder.
03/04/00 - The Brookhaven HS Panthers won their 4th straight baseball game with a 24-3 victory over Natchez. Brookhaven pounded out 18 hits, including 5 home runs. Miguel Banks led the way with two homers, Lorenzo McNulty had a grand slam, Daniel Boyd hit one home run, and Fred Perkins hit an inside the park home run. These four players had 3 hits each as did Aaron Oberschmidt. Casey Wallace worked the first 3 innings of the 5-inning game to gain his first win of the year. The Panther's pitching staff has yielded 2 earned runs in their last 23 innings pitched (0.78 ERA). Brookhaven will play Madison Central and Cathedral in the McComb Tournament on Monday before traveling to Donalsonville, LA to participate in a tournament at Ascension Catholic.
03/04/00 - The Noxapater Tigers lost to Scott Central, 6-5. Noxapater hopes to get back on the winning track when they take on Philadelphia HS in a double header at Philadelphia.
03/02/00 - Houston HS baseball is 7-1 on the year. According to my source, this is a strong team with a lot of great seniors and juniors giving leadership. They have great hitting and pitching. They may well make a run for the division and the state 3A title.
Top prospects include pitcher Scott Ellison (senior pitcher and second baseman and a Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen pick), Matt Childs (senior centerfielder and an outstanding football player), Kenny Hicks (junior pitcher and 1b), Jeremy Brooks (senior pitcher and 3b), and Grant King (senior catcher with a canon for an arm).
In addition, Houston has built a beautiful new stadium. First game in the new stadium is this Friday night against Amory. And "Old Timers Topper Alumni" game is schedule as a fund raiser this Monday night at 6 p.m.
The Houston Hilltopper High School baseball team now has its own website. The Houston Hilltopper web page includes photos and summaries of all games, roster, schedule, and a message board. Give them a visit.
03/02/00 - Behind the perfect game pitching of Brent Walker (3-0), the West Point Green Wave baseball team defeated Noxubee County, 15-0, Tuesday night. Brent struck out 10 Noxubee County batters. Ben Earnest, C.K. Foster and Corey Carter hit home runs for the Green Wave. West Point, along with Starkville HS, will participate in the Pensacola baseball tournament during spring break.
03/01/00 - The Noxapater Tigers baseball team opened their season Tuesday with a 9-5 loss to Philadelphia. Noxapater struck first with a home run by Dee Honesburger but Philadelphia came back to rally and never looked back. Although my source did not get his name, number 4 for Philadelphia his a home run each time he batted and knocked in 6 RBI. The Noxapater Tigers will now travel to Scott Central for a Thursday game.
03/01/00 - Ripley HS baseball ran its record to 7-0 with a 4-3 win over New Hope HS. Ripley scored two runs in the 6th and 7th innings to earn a come from behind victory over the Trojans. Andy Wilbanks pitched a complete game victory, claiming his 3rd win this season against no losses. Ripley also won 15-1 against Walnut. Scott Settlemires earned that victory and is now 3-0 on the young season. Scott is 13-0 in his last 13 starts spanning the last two years. Ripley is being led at the plate by Walnut HS transfer Trave Hopkins (.543)and Andy Wilbanks (.556). Ripley's next game is against Pine Grove as Ripley goes for their third straight Tippah County Championship.
03/01/00 - The Brookhaven HS Panthers won 2 of 3 games at the Central Mississippi Classic this past week This brings their record to 3 and 3 on the season.
The tournament started on a rough note with a 10-0 loss to number four-ranked Brandon HS. Brookhaven followed the loss with a 14-7 win over Pearl at Pearl and then defeated Yazoo City 5-0 at Northwest Rankin.
The Panthers have a few guys off to good starts. Co-Lin signee Arlandus Brown is hitting .450 (9-20) with 7 stolen bases. Included in the 9 hits are 2 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Junior outfielder Fred Perkins is hitting .588 (10-17) with 5 stolen bases. Sophomore pitcher James McCall tossed his second straight shutout Saturday against Yazoo City. He has now thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings. McCall's record stands at 2-1 with an ERA of 1.00 and 18 strikeouts in 14 innings.
