June 2000 Mississippi High School All-Sports Skuttle-Butt

If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Do you have info you want to share? Here are the different ways you can send it to me.

Cleveland HS Football - John Eubanks was recently interviewed by a Greenville television station because he was voted the most valuable receiver and player at a recent University of Florida camp. John, whose dad, Melvin, is the head coach at Coahoma CC, runs the forty in the 4.5 to 4.6 range and is projected to start at QB for Eastside.

George County HS Baseball - George County senior-to-be pitcher Lance Davis was clocked as high as 92 mph at the State Games in Meridian. During the season, he was consistently between 90 and 95.

6/25/00
Winston Academy - Winston Academy won the 7 on 7 passing tournament at East Central Community College. Taylor McNeel ( Ist Team All-MPSA in 1999) and Lenny Boatner were the offensive leaders for WA. Winston Academy went 5 and 0 beating Noxapater in the Championship Game. Taylor had 8 interceptions in 5 games. Winston defeated Ackerman, West Lauderdale, Carthage, Union and Noxapater for the title.

Moss Point HS Football - The word is Moss Point HS has a sophomore-to-be that should receive some attention over the next few year. Emmitt Johnson, Jr. (5-6, 190, 4.7) plays noseguard and middle linebacker for Moss Point HS. According to my source, he is very strong with a 285-bench and 440-squat. He is also rumored to be a good student. If Emmitt continues to grow in height and adds a little more strength, he could turn out to be a D-I prospect.

Clarksdale HS Football - According to a source of mine, Clarksdale HS has several sophomores who could turn out to be good players as they continue to grow and gain playing experience.

  • Jonathan King - Plays center and middle linebacker, very strong, comes off the ball extremely fast. Needs to gain height and weight to become a legit D-I prospect.
  • Chris Jones - Offensive guard, very strong, good run blocker. Needs to work on moving his feet better. Needs to add size.
  • Marcus Cohen - 6-5, 290-lb. offensive tackle. Very strong. Has excellent size but needs to work on his quickness.
  • Peter Kum-Nji - 5-9, 175-lb. inside linebacker. Strong for his size and age (210-bench), very aggressive and physical for his size. Good tackler.
  • Fernando Matthews - 5-10, 190-lb. outside linebacker. Will start this coming season. Great combo of size and speed, has that aggressive mentality needed to play defense. Plays very hard. Just needs to learn to play a little more under control.
  • Paul Kum-Nji - 5-9, 160-lb. outside linebacker. Strong for his size (190-bench), very physical and aggressive, plays hard, loves contact, very fast, great jumping ability (can dunk a basketball).

Madison Ridgeland Academy Football - Chuck Darbonne, Madison Ridgeland Academy Class of 2000, has signed to play quarterback at Holmes Community College at Goodman, MS. this fall.

    6/12/00
Moss Point HS Football - Terry Moore, former Moss Point assistant football coach and Ex-Greenwood high school Head Coach, is now the Athletic Director / Head Football Coach at Greenville High School in Alabama. This is a 5A school that won State Championships in 1987 and 1994.

    6/08/00
Coahoma County High School Football - Coahoma County High School (Clarksdale, MS.) has a senior offensive lineman who has a chance to be a D-I prospect. His name is Travis Reavis. Travis is 6-7 and 345 pounds and has great feet, according to recruiting analyst Kevin Henderson.

    6/06/00
Leland High School Football - According to a source of mine, Leland High School has at least four senior football players who could develop into D-I prospects.

  • Victor Carter - 6-1, 290-lbs. Center/Long snapper. Will qualify.
  • Anthony Webb - 6-0, 195-lbs. Quarterback, Good arm. Will qualify.
  • Anthony McBride - 6-2, 270-lbs. Offensive tackle. Will qualify.
  • Tekelvue Ware - 6-2, 170-lbs. Wide receiver. Great speed.

    6/05/00
Wayne County HS Football - Wayne County HS has a 15-year old sophomore-to-be who could turn out to be a top D-I prospect by his senior season. Brodie Jones started every game last season at inside linebacker for Wayne County High School. He was selected Defensive Player of the Game for his outstanding play in three of them. Brodie, who is 5-10, 195-lbs, runs a 4.7 forty, benches 315 and squats 450. With the addition of former Amory HS head football coach Bobby Hall as Wayne County's head football coach, Brodie's next two seasons could prove to be outstanding.

Ackerman HS Football - Ackerman has a 10th grader, Chris Davis, who bears watching during the next three season. Chris, who is 6-0, 225, plays noseguard for Ackerman.

Petal High School Baseball - Petal High School's Garrett Drake has been selected to play 2000 summer baseball for The Ohio Thunder, a nationally recruited 22-player team located in Columbus, Ohio, sponsored by a non-profit charitable organization with corporate assistance from Nike, Inc. Drake also has been selected to the 18-player U.S.A. Dixie National Team to play in the U.S.A. Baseball Tournament of Stars in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The Panther starting second baseman for the past two years, including Petal's 1999 Mississippi State 4A championship team, Drake also played Petal Dixie, American Legion, and national Team One baseball at Clemson last summer. This summer he received return invitations from Team One, Top Guns, Area Code Baseball, and several other national amateur baseball organizations. Drake said he chose The Thunder over other full time summer offers because of their commitment to field the best nationally recruited amateur baseball team in the U.S. and the rigorous daily playing and practice schedule designed to prepare players for college and professional baseball.

Drake also said living in Columbus with The Thunder and playing a 75-80 game schedule, including five national tournaments (The Hounddog Outback Classic (Huntington, WV), the Memphis All-American Classic (Memphis, TN), The Great Black Swamp Classic (Bowling Green, OH), the CABA College Division World Series (Schenectady, NY), and the NABF Wooden Bat College Division World Series (Dayton, OH)) presented an opportunity to challenge himself by playing with and against some of the best players in the nation.

"I've had and have the best high school coaching available and been lucky to play in a baseball program that is second to none on a national scale, so playing with The Thunder and U.S.A. Baseball can only build on what Coach Watkins and the rest of our staff have already taught me. It can only help me in getting ready for my senior year." He will report to The Thunder in Columbus on June 10th and take a leave of absence June 19th through June 26th to go to Cooperstown for the U.S.A. Baseball Tournament of Stars.

    Additional Garrett Drake info:
A strong possibility for Dandy Dozen selection next year. Is 5-11 and weighs 170-lbs. Has 4.5 speed in the forty. Tied a school record for stolen bases as a sophomore with 35 stolen bases in 38 attempts. Has received baseball recruiting letters from Duke (recruiting him heavily), Clemson, Virginia, Tulane, Alabama, USM, Florida and numerous other Division I schools. Also plays DB for the football team and is being recruited by the likes of Ole Miss, Rice and Alabama.

    6/01/00
Picayune High School Football - Picayune High School's recently graduated quarterback is a player that may have gotten overlooked this past recruiting year. Cole Raiford, 6-5, 225-lbs, was a two-year starter who is an excellent student. It sounds like this youngster, who will not be 18 years old until August, is a player that some college coach might want to take a chance on.
