August 2000 Mississippi High School All-Sports Skuttle-Butt

If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Do you have info you want to share? Here are the different ways you can send it to me.

Olive Branch HS Football - There are a couple of juniors on the OBHS team that bear watching.

One is Blake Petite, a 6-6, 200-pound junior quarterback who wil be starting for the first time this season. According to my source, he has a brother who is an offensive lineman at Vanderbilt. My source wasn't completely sure of this but he believes Blake's mother attended Ole Miss.

The other one is Quteria Tunstall, 6-2, 235-pound fullback. The word is he could be highly recruited next season if he continues to improve.

Taylorsville HS Football - Per a source of mine, here is an update on a couple of Taylorsville HS football players.
According to my source, Timmy Ducksworth, a 6-3, 290-pounds OL/DL, is the most athletic 290-pound human being that he has seen since MSU DL Dorsett Davis. Timmy plays guard and when he pulls he will pancake at least two players every time. On a 60-yard touchdown run by Chris Keyes, Ducksworth pancaked two Pelahatchie offensive linemen and a linebacker and still managed to block a DB ten yards downfield in front of the running back.

Chris Keyes, a 6-0, 165-pound senior DB/RB, is another player who deserves a big look. He reminds my source of MSU DB freshman Bryan Shoemaker only he's taller and a step quicker. Against Pelahatchie, he rushed for over 100 yards and two TDs (60, 40 yards) and intercepted a pass.

Wayne County HS Baseball - WCHS has a 6-1, 220-pound junior RHP by the name of Jade Roberts. According to my source, as a sophomore, he had the most strikeouts in District 5-5A and was also a District 5-5A honorable mention selection. He was selected a member of the Mississippi State Games, District 8. My source went on to say that Jade, who have has been a starting pitcher since his freshmen year, has a fastball that has been clocked in the mid 80's.

Richland HS Football - Richland HS has two ninth graders that are great athletes who have a chance to be D-I prospects. One is LeAndrew Hicks, a quarterback who threw a touchdown in their recent season opening victory. The other younster is his cousin, Bryant Jenkins, a 5-11, 170-pound starting linebacker. Both also play baseball and soccer. Keep an eye out for these two youngsters during the next four years.

Brookhaven HS - Brookhaven HS dual star (football and baseball) Fred Perkins enjoyed a breakthrough summer for the Panther's AAU team. Perkins hit over .400 with 6 home runs in the 24 games in which he played. He also excelled in the State Games going 6 for 16 (.400), including a triple and an inside the park home run. According to my source, one professional scout has said he would rank Perkins as one the top 5 professional prospects in the state.

Perkins is also receiving attention on the gridiron as well. Despite not being listed on the Top 40 players list in the Clarion Ledger, Perkins has been offered a scholarship by LSU. My source went on to say that Perkins has also received heavy interest from Mississippi State, Auburn, and Tennessee.

Back at the State Games, Panthers Cayce Wallace, Aaron Oberschmidt, and Miguel Banks represented the Brookhaven High School baseball program well. Wallace started all but one game and batted over .300 for the tournament. Oberschmidt, a senior catcher, started 3 of the 5 games and went 5-10 (.500). Banks hit .333 while playing in 4 of the 5 games. Each of these three participated in a talent showcase at USM's Pete Taylor Park on Sunday, August 27.

Junior first baseman Ben Goza was invited to and participated in the Doyle Baseball Camp held at Smith Wills Stadium earlier this month. Goza received high marks from the staff and should be one of the state's top juniors this Spring.

Centreville Academy - According to a source of mine, Will Arnold, an offensive lineman from Centreville Academy, is mentioned by his coach in an article from the 8/17/00 Enterprise-Journal as a key player as a sophomore. Here is what the article said about Will: "Three key Tigers Hurst will count on are a pair of 300-pound linemen in senior Britt Cavin (6-foot-1, 315 pounds) and sophomore Will Arnold (6-4, 300) and junior John Vincent (6-1, 165) who returns to start at quarterback."

Raleigh HS - According to a source of mine, Raleigh HS has a kicker,Clay Goodwin, who has been kicking well in practice. My source went on to say that he was the top kicker at the Auburn camp this year.

Wayne County HS - Brett Wilson, the starting catcher for Wayne County since his freshman year, is an up and coming junior who District 5-5A honorable mention last year. What makes this very impressive is that teams Northwest Rankin, Meridian, and Brandon are included in the district. According to my source, Brett has thrown a 1.9 to second base and consistently throws a 2.0. He is also supposed to be a tough out, according to my source.

Brett also has a teammate, Jade Roberts (also a junior), who throws in the mid-80's. Like Brett, he earned District 5-5A honorable mention last season.

East Webster HS East Webster HS could be one of the surprise teams this season due to an abundance of quality players.

  • Lerin Pruitt - Senior, DE, 6-4, 210.
  • Billy Joe Cole - Senior, QB, 5-8, 162, passed for over 1,000 last season.
  • Lance Crowley - Senior, LB, 5-10, 185, hard hitter who has recorded over 100 tackles each of the last three years. Also punts.
  • Lath Hubbard - Senior, DB, 5-11, 155, 4.4 to 4.5 range.
  • Heath Pearson - Junior, OL, 6-4, 285.
  • Chris Avant - Junior, WR, 6-2, 175, 4.5.
  • Brad Buckner - Junior, DL, 6-0, 260.
  • Cary Rushing - Junior, OL (Center), 5-11, 216.

    8/14/00
Clinton HS Baseball - Mike Cashion, a right handed sophomore pitcher from Clinton HS, has been invited to participate in the Doyle Baseball Fall Classic in Winter Haven Fla. October 26-29. He is one of only 130 players nationwide who have been invited to this very prestigious event.

St. Aloysious HS (Vicksburg) Football - The word is senior offensive lineman Jay Biedenharn from St. Al's in Vicksburg, MS has dropped quite a bit of weight and is now down to 315 pounds. His weight loss has helped him increase his speed.

Warren Central HS (Vicksburg) Football - According to my source, Tyler Derosette (5-11, 220) is going to be an outstanding addition for the Warren Central football program. Although only a sophomore, he is their starting middle linebacker. He has a pitbull mentality and doesn't back down from anyone.

8/01/00 - From someone who has seen him play, here is a little info on Quitman HS lefthanded pitcher Mario Lapham.

"I saw the games with the high strikeout count - good movement on the ball - really crossed up the batters. Real good in and out stuff. Only time Mario would get into trouble was worrying about runners on second. He would be late looking to the plate and would be wide to the first base side. It didn't happen all the time. I was really impressed with the Quitman catcher. It was pretty much a case of if they didn't strike out they were gunned down by the catcher going into second. The kid's name is Matt Culberson. He will be a senior in the upcoming year."
