Olive Branch HS Football - There are a couple of juniors on the OBHS team that bear watching.
One is Blake Petite, a 6-6, 200-pound junior quarterback who wil be starting for the first time this season. According to my source, he has a brother who is an offensive lineman at Vanderbilt. My source wasn't completely sure of this but he believes Blake's mother attended Ole Miss.
The other one is Quteria Tunstall, 6-2, 235-pound fullback. The word is he could be highly recruited next season if he continues to improve.
Chris Keyes, a 6-0, 165-pound senior DB/RB, is another player who deserves a big look. He reminds my source of MSU DB freshman Bryan Shoemaker only he's taller and a step quicker. Against Pelahatchie, he rushed for over 100 yards and two TDs (60, 40 yards) and intercepted a pass.

Brookhaven HS - Brookhaven HS dual star (football and baseball) Fred Perkins enjoyed a breakthrough summer for the Panther's AAU team. Perkins hit over .400 with 6 home runs in the 24 games in which he played. He also excelled in the State Games going 6 for 16 (.400), including a triple and an inside the park home run. According to my source, one professional scout has said he would rank Perkins as one the top 5 professional prospects in the state.
Perkins is also receiving attention on the gridiron as well. Despite not being listed on the Top 40 players list in the Clarion Ledger, Perkins has been offered a scholarship by LSU. My source went on to say that Perkins has also received heavy interest from Mississippi State, Auburn, and Tennessee.
Back at the State Games, Panthers Cayce Wallace, Aaron Oberschmidt, and Miguel Banks represented the Brookhaven High School baseball program well. Wallace started all but one game and batted over .300 for the tournament. Oberschmidt, a senior catcher, started 3 of the 5 games and went 5-10 (.500). Banks hit .333 while playing in 4 of the 5 games. Each of these three participated in a talent showcase at USM's Pete Taylor Park on Sunday, August 27.
Junior first baseman Ben Goza was invited to and participated in the Doyle Baseball Camp held at Smith Wills Stadium earlier this month. Goza received high marks from the staff and should be one of the state's top juniors this Spring.

Centreville Academy - According to a source of mine, Will Arnold, an offensive lineman from Centreville Academy, is mentioned by his coach in an article from the 8/17/00 Enterprise-Journal as a key player as a sophomore. Here is what the article said about Will: "Three key Tigers Hurst will count on are a pair of 300-pound linemen in senior Britt Cavin (6-foot-1, 315 pounds) and sophomore Will Arnold (6-4, 300) and junior John Vincent (6-1, 165) who returns to start at quarterback."
Brett also has a teammate, Jade Roberts (also a junior), who throws in the mid-80's. Like Brett, he earned District 5-5A honorable mention last season.

Clinton HS Baseball - Mike Cashion, a right handed sophomore pitcher from Clinton HS, has been invited to participate in the Doyle Baseball Fall Classic in Winter Haven Fla. October 26-29. He is one of only 130 players nationwide who have been invited to this very prestigious event.
8/01/00 - From someone who has seen him play, here is a little info on Quitman HS lefthanded pitcher Mario Lapham.
"I saw the games with the high strikeout count - good movement on the ball - really crossed up the batters. Real good in and out stuff. Only time Mario would get into trouble was worrying about runners on second. He would be late looking to the plate and would be wide to the first base side. It didn't happen all the time. I was really impressed with the Quitman catcher. It was pretty much a case of if they didn't strike out they were gunned down by the catcher going into second. The kid's name is Matt Culberson. He will be a senior in the upcoming year."
