07/30/01 - Well, The Clarion-Ledger's Top-40 is out and we all know the names of forty of the best players in the state of Mississippi this year. But those aren't the only great players in the state. According to a source of mine, here are a few more high school football players on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that have a chance to also be very good players.

Oak Grove HS - According to a source of mine, Rusty Clayton (Sr., 6-2, 215) has been mentioned by several coaches as a solid D-1 prospect as a deep snapper. He has been to camps at Delta State, Alabama, MSU. My source went on to say that he is an outstanding student and person with a tremendous work ethic. Very quick and accurate snaps.
07/20/01 - I thought I would go ahead and put this interview on the free site. Hope you guys enjoy it.
I caught up with Elbert Shumake last night. Elbert, who is transferring to Moss Point HS from Gautier HS this year, could very well end up as one of the top 5 to top 10 senior football players on the Mississippi Gulf Coast this year.
Elbert played for Gautier High School last season but has transferred to Moss Point High School this season, because, as Elbert told me, "teams started running away from me last season."
He played defensive end last season for Gautier but will play linebacker and tight end for Moss Point. During his two starting seasons at Gautier, he had approximately 28 sacks. After having an outstanding season his sophomore year, he made 61 total tackles his junior year, primarily due to teams running away from him.
It is not surprising that teams ran away from him because Elbert is 6-2, 245 pounds and runs an outstanding 4.6 forty yard dash. He hasn't maxed out on the bench press lately but lifted 260 pounds the last time he maxed out. He has maxed out at 425 pounds on the squat. Elbert said he is working hard in the weight room to increase his strength.
Because he has been working hard to increase his strength, he decided to not go to any football camps this summer.
He is on schedule to academically qualify with a 19 ACT test score and a solid grade point average. He plans on majoring in business in college.
He has received numerous letters from the SEC schools and many other schools from across the country.
At the moment, his favorite schools are North Carolina and Florida State. He has liked North Carolina for a while now because of the atmosphere. According to Elbert, "it is the closet thing to the Gulf Coast atmosphere." He said he likes Florida State because, "everybody likes Florida State."
He has not decided if he will take any unofficial visits or attend any college football games this coming season. "I'm going to go with the flow," said Elbert.
Don't be surprised to see big things from Moss Point HS this year with the addition of Elbert Shumake to an already very talented Moss Point squad.

Hillcrest Christian School - Watch out for sophomore pitcher Tyler Lum. Tyler, who is 6-2, 180, has a good arm and could develop into a possible D-I prospect before his high school career is over.
07/08/01 - For the second straight summer, Baldwyn High School quarterback Blake Barnes has won the Junior QB award at the Bowden Passing Academy. Blake, who will be a sophomore this coming season, is 6-3, 190 pounds.
