Picayune HS - Baseball players to watch.

SENIORS:

  • Matt Riser, outfielder, hit 450 as soph, .343 as junior, great camps at Ole Miss and LSU. Played in State Games. Made All State team-4A, all district good speed. D1 prospect.
  • Rhyne Hughes, LHP, good selection of off-speed pitches, has grown to 6-foot-2 in last 12 months. A REAL SLEEPER. Limited some in pitching last year due to hip injury. Pitched 30 Innings, 23 K's. Could have a great senior year.
  • Chris Bucano, LHP, 5-foot-9, pitched 60 innings, 41 k's, ERA 2.56, getting better daily as he has only pitched 3 years, definite JUCO prospect.

    JUNIORS:

  • Richard Imhoff, infielder and RHP, hit .415 in 2001 and broke school record for hits( 5 hrs, 3 triples, 16 doubles,151 at bats) excellent speed, defensive back on football team, 6-foot-1, 170 lbs, excellent speed. Good fastball in the 85-88 mph range. Ole Miss and Southern have sent letters All State, All district, state games.
  • Justin Pigott, LHP, 5-foot-11, 155, fastball 80-85 last spring, All State, All-district, state games. Switch hitter .300, pitched 71 innings, 336 batters, ERA 3.77, 23 base on balls. Good control, had a great stretch run in playoff defeating Terry (Van Pope is for real..a great prospect), Oak Grove twice, and Pearl (state champs), so far, letters from Tulane and Southern. ACT 18 as soph, 99.80 GPA. He has the drive and the curve ball to play D-1...the rest is up to the baseball gods.

Moss Point HS - Former basketball standout Leroy Heard is now attending the University of Texas-San Antonio on a basketball scholarship.

    09/20/01
BALDWYN HS - Baldwyn High School sophomore QB Blake Barnes is having a great year for the Bearcats so far. His Cats are 3-0 and are receiving votes in the Little 10 polls. Blake was 12-19 for 250 yards in game-one against Kossuth, 5-13 for around 125 yards in game-two against Ripley, and 22 of 29 for 308 yards against Saltillo this past Friday. Although my sources wasn't exactly sure, he believes Blake has thrown 2 interceptions, 5 touchdown passes and 2 rushing touchdowns. After three games, Blake's stats are 39-of-61 (64%) and 683 yards passing.

WINONA HS - Keep an eye on senior running back Marcus Flowers. Recently, he rushed for 294 yards on 23 carries against Kosciusko HS. A source who has seen both Flowers and MSU's Dicenzo Miller play said that Flowers is better than Miller at this point in his career. There is a very good chance that Flowers will have to attend juco for a couple of years.

INDEPENDENCE HS - IHS has several players who have a chance to play on the next level.

  • Lucas Holts - Senior FB/LB, 5-11, 205, 4.7, 330 bench press. Loves contact.
  • Antonio Leverson - Junior RB/DB, 5-11, 170, 4.4. All-Division 3 3A DB as a sophomore. Great tackler.
  • Ryne Shackleford - Junior Kicker, 6-1, 180. Great range and consistency. Excellent student.
  • Josh Crockett (Spelling ?) - Sophomore OT, 6-2.5, 260. Good feet and still growing.
