07/14/02 - Saturday, I attended several Dizzy Dean World Series games at Caledonia and New Hope. Here are a few highlights from the games that I saw.
Caledonia High School senior pitcher Josh Johnson (5-11, 165) threw in the mid-80's, topping out at 88 mph. He also showed excellent defensive ability at third base. Johnson showed excellent control.
Caledonia High School senior pitcher Scottie Jacobs (5-9, 150), like Johnson, threw in the 85-86 mph range, topping out at 87 mph. He also threw a 64 to 68 mph curveball. During his two outings, he exhibited excellent control, throwing 72 pitches, 49 of which were strikes. He also showed exceptional control of his curveball. He played extremely well at short during the times he didn't pitch.
New Hope High School senior pitcher Tyler Hunter (6-6, 165) threw his fastball in the low-80's.
The highest ranked player in the DD World Series was Lufkin (Tx.) High School's senior right-handed pitcher Craig Whitaker (6-4, 180). Craig, who topped out at 88 mph while shutting out New Hope, told me that he has been clocked in the 89-91 range, topping out at 94. Prospects Plus has him ranked as the 23rd best player in the nation.

Winona HS - Watch out for Winona HS baseball player Greg Dees. A starter on the WHS team since his 7th grade year, Greg will be a sophomore this coming year. According to my source, Greg batted .393 this past season.
