05/16/03 - I attended the Starkville High School vs. Grenada High School scrimmage yesterday afternoon.

Although both teams should be two of the top teams in 5A next year, Grenada seemed to have the better of it yesterday, scoring on two long drives during the first part of the scrimmage. During the two scoring drives, GHS QB Jerimy Watson completed numerous passes, showing why he will be one of the top senior QBs in the state next season. His teammate, offensive tackle MacArthur House, also looked extremely good blocking. Although I wasn't able to watch him on all the plays, I never did see his man get to the QB and rarely did his man make a tackle. He has quite a few pancake blocks. Starkville, playing without DI linebacker prospect Heath Grant due to minor surgery that kept him out of spring practice, was not without its stars as senior WR Antonio McCoy scored on two long bombs, outrunning everybody after catching the ball.

Bulldog baseball signee Jeffrey Rea won the Popstar award for baseball. The Popstar awards, sponsored by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and named after the late Pop Allen, are given to one of three high school nominees in each sport in Mississippi high school sports. The two other baseball nominees were future Bulldog Alex McIntosh and Alabama signee Cliff Davis. The winner of the football Popstar award was also an MSU signee, Omarr Conner.
