04/28/04 - High School baseball update.

  • Seminary's Derek Norris, a senior who signed with Delta State, hit his 13th, 14th and 15th home runs of the season Monday against St. Joe and Lloyd Star. He did this one day after his grandmother, who attended all of his games, passed away.
  • Ridgeland High School senior RHP Justin Smith, with his late movement fastball that is in the 84-85 mph range, had 16 ground ball outs and 4 strikeouts against New Hope last Friday, then hit a home run in a 16-15 win over Amory Saturday, then turned around and defeated New Hope again on Monday. He also signed with Delta State.
  • Senior SS Bo Davis of West Lauderdale HS (a Southern Miss signee) hit a mammoth three-run home run on Saturday to knock Greene County's ace, LHP Taylor Kimble (a Meridian CC signee), out of the ballgame. Earlier in the game, Taylor had hit Davis on a first pitch fastball. He later picked him off first base.
  • Last Friday, Prep All-American and MSU signee Mitch Moreland, a LHP from Amory HS, had a no-hitter going into the last inning against Kosciusko and struck out at least 12. The next day his team lost to Ridgeland to end their season.

Jackson Academy - JA has a sophomore (class of 2007) running back/strong safety, Nathan Jew, who has a chance to be a good one. An honors student (3.5 GPA), Nation is a 5-foot-10, 175 pounder who is not only strong (275+ bench) but fast (4.6 forty).

As a 9th grader, Nation, voted MVP player on his junior varsity team, ran for over 1,000 yards while scoring 17 touchdowns in 8 games.

Also a member of the junior varsity basketball and track teams, Nathan had done well in both of those sports. In basketball, he was awarded the Best Hustler Award this past season. In track, he ran 11.3 seconds in the 100 meters, 23.5 in the 200 meters, long jumped 18' 3" and threw the discus 139'. He is also part of the 400m, 800m and 1600m relays.

Nathan has an older brother, Nicholas, who was also an excellent running back at JA the past few years. His style of running mimics his older brother's speed and ability to cut, but also includes a very solid and strong 175-pound frame.
