11/09/04 - The Mississippi Stars, a team made up of some of the top baseball players in Mississippi, finished their fall season last weekend, defeating Barry Lyons' Gulf Coast Encore Stars in a DH at Hinds CC. In doing so, they set a record of hitting 4 triples in one inning, 3 in a row at one point, another record. They finished their season 25-4.

Several Stars will be moving on to the next level. Cullan Kight, a first baseman from Simpson Academy, committed to Ole Miss. Luke Adkins, a left fielder from Nettleton H.S., and Brian Dozier, a shortstop from Itawamba A.H.S., both committed to Southern Miss. Meridian CC has offered Cory Chance, an outfielder/submarine pitcher from N.E. Lauderdale, and Paul Gatchell, a third baseman/shortstop from Pascagoula (Paul has also been offered by Miss Gulf Coast CC and turned down a Division I offer from S.E. Missouri because it is too far far from home). Edward Jo, a catcher from Ridgeland H.S., has been offered by Belhaven College.

Mississippi Stars alumni news:

  • Shane Bazell was released by the Oakland A's but signed with the Rangers this past week and will get a chance in spring training to show them what he can do.
  • Christopher Rayborn has returned from Instructional League in Arizona where he played this fall after being drafted by the Angels last June.
