12/05/04 - Notes from the 2004 Mississippi Community and Junior College All-Star Classic held yesterday at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi.
The North squad defeated the South squad before approximately 400 to 500 fans.
Award winners: James H. "Wooky" Gray MVP Award - Rod Stevens, QB, East Miss.; North MVP Offense - Brandon Hunt, WR, Northwest; North MVP Defense - Melvin Ellis, DB, Itawamba; South MVP Offense - Joe Tobias, RB, Southwest; South MVP Defense - Kentrell Tanner, DT, Hinds.
According to a junior college coach who I spoke to at the game, the player most coveted by the 150+ four-year coaches who were in attendance at the Thursday and Friday practices was Hinds DT Kentrell Tanner.
Due to the fact that a great deal of the top D-I caliber talent among the junior colleges did not play in the game, most of the coaches that attended the two days of practices were from non-D-I schools.
One player that may have helped himself the past three days was Gulf Coast CC OL Alan Leon (6-5, 328). Alan, who played for GCCC for one year after transferring from Jackson State, played well during the game. A December grad, Alan told me that he has offers from Troy State and Middle Tennessee State and that he is leaning to Troy State. His head coach, Steve Campbell, told me that he could play in the SEC, but due to having played just one year of juco ball, very schools have gotten a chance to see him play this season.
