If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

09/30/98 - Just thought I would give you a little update on one of the top junior linebackers in the state of Mississippi. Last year, Louisville's Chris Eaves, who is 6-1, 220, with 4.6 speed, was voted Most Valuable Defensive Player in Louisville's division. My source also said he is an outstanding young man, on and off the field.

09/29/98 - Another youngster who deserves to be mentioned is Ripley's David Carter. David is a 6-0, 170, 4.6-forty wide receiver/defensive back who is a good student, excellent athlete and has a very good attitude.

09/30/98 - I have received additional info on three players from Mize HS. Junior Eric Horn (WR/DB, 6-1, 195, 4.5) benches 275, squats 385 and dead lifts 475. Sophomore Derrick Ducksworth (RB/LB, 6-0, 205, 4.5) benches 350, squats 500 and dead lifts 475. Derrick is a power runner with breakaway speed but his best position, according to my source, is linebacker. A third Mize HS player to watch is Timmy Blackwell, a 5-11, 175-lb running back with great moves and 4.55 speed in the forty.

BTW, did you know 1A Mize made the Miss State camp playoffs by defeating several larger schools such as Hattiesburg (MS), Provine (Jackson, MS) and Rome, (GA)? This is definitely a school that has a lot of talent and will be one to watch.

Folks, if you know of a player you feel deserves to have his or her name mentioned on this page, please email me any info you have on that player. The primary reason for my Mississippi HS Skuttle-Butt section is to help publicize quality student/athletes who live in the state of Mississippi.

09/28/98 - Tupelo HS junior running back George Purnell had a good game a couple of games ago, running 5 times for 53 yards. George is fast (4.41-forty) and a good student (close to a 3.0 gpa, according to my source).

09/28/98 - A couple of players I haven't mentioned but deserve to be are sophomore running back Marty Smart (5-11, 170, 4.5) and junior defensive end Corey Simpson (6-3, 210, 4.5). Both of these youngsters, who are good students by the way, play for West Lowndes HS in Columbus, MS. Corey, who is very aggressive on defense, has the frame to add more weight but also has the ability to play linebacker in college. Some folks from West Lowndes are saying Marty could be the next Keffer McGee (a West Lowndes alumni). BTW, Marty ran for 172 yards on 22 carries last Friday night.

09/28/98 - Louisville / Amory game update:
"For those of us who watched the LHS-Amory game, it was well worth the price of admission. Louisville controlled the game for the most part, but Bobby Hall pulled a miracle field goal out with three seconds left to keep his undefeated season intact with a thrilling 34-32 victory.

"Will Hall connected with David Mooneyham for several big catches to keep Amory in the game. Mooneyham is a great receiver and Hall can throw the ball. Louisville's Marcus "Donkey" Holmes ran over Amory's defense and Dandy Dozen, Michael Goss made some great catches. Louisville's defense did a good job, despite the fact that linebacker Chris Eaves saw limited action due to a shoulder injury.

"It was truly a great game and look for Amory to go all the way and Louisville will likely win the remaining regular scheduled games. Clarksdale stands in the way of the Wildcats claiming a sixth state championship, but don't count the 'Cats out just yet!"

09/27/98 - Taylorsville / Mize game update:
Taylorsville HS junior quarterback Jason Campbell, unofficially, was 16 for 24 (three dropped passes) with 232 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 Int. He also rushed 6 times for 48 yards. Taylorsville's tight end Kory Thigpen, also a junior, had 4 catches for 85 yards, including a 45 yard TD pass reception.

Mize also had two kids who my source feels are D-I prospects: sophomore Derrick Ducksworth (RB, 6-0, 205, 4.5) and junior Eric Horn (WR, 6-1, 195, 4.5). Both players, according to my source, have blazing speed and are great athletes.

09/27/98 - Keep an eye out for Ackerman lineman Adam McDill (6-2, 275). He is receiving a lot of interest from Southern Miss. I was also told that Miss State is showing interest. My source also said he has a high ACT and is an excellent student.

09/27/98 - Update on Jordan Lesley: According to a source close to the situation, Jordan is a great kid, excellent student, great athlete and works very hard on and off the field. My source feels he could be an impact player in the SEC. So far, Auburn has shown the most interest. For those of you who don't know who Jordan is, he is a 6-3, 215, 4.6-4.7 junior linebacker from Itawamba Agriculture HS in Fulton, Miss.

09/26/98 - Here's the latest on a couple of Smithville HS players:

Running back Matt Grier only played the first half but still had over one hundred yards of total offense and scored 2 touchdowns. Willie Lopez threw for 5 touchdowns in a 42 to 6 Smithville victory over Hamilton.

09/23/98 - Rarely do they get mentioned, except when they make a mistake, but without a good one even the greatest kicker or punter will not reach their full potential. I'm talking about a long snapper and Clinton HS has one of the best in Matthew Pulliam (6-1, 270, 16-year old junior). Matthew has been called "a great snapper" by his coach David Bradberry, according to The Clarion-Ledger and has snapped every punt, extra point and field goal successfully since his sophomore year. He also was selected team player of the week during the Warren Central game last year. Other accomplishments: (1) Timed at 0.68 seconds in punt snaps at the 1998 Miss State Long Snapper Camp; (2) Black Belt Shotokan Karate; (3) Left-handed relief pitcher; (4) and B student.

09/21/98 - According to a source of mine, Tupelo HS has a junior running back that has the speed (sub 4.5) and size (6-0, 186) to become a very good running back. His name is George Purnell. If any of you go to Tupelo's games, tell me what you think about him.

09/21/98 - Here are several emails about Mississippi high school games from Friday night:

Taylorsville vs Northeast Jones

"Taylorsville's junior QB Jason Campbell was 4-for-14 (4 drops) for 90 yards, 1 TD. Two of his completions were as beautiful as you will ever see. He completed a 45-yrd. pass to his TE Kory Thigpen. Campbell had two LBs on him and he just stood in the pocket and fired a perfect strike. Incredible poise! His TD pass was a 20-yrd. strike in which he rolled to his right and fired across the field, over two DBs for a touchdown in the corner of the endzone. One of the most beautiful passes I've ever seen in high school. He has a cannon and is sooo accurate. His accuracy and poise are spectacular.

"Taylorsville's soph. running back Chris Keyes ran for 50 yards on 7 carries before leaving with cramps in the 3rd quarter. He now has approximately 500 yards in four games.

"Northeast Jones junior running back Jermaine Jones (6-2, 200, fast and strong) ran for about 200 yards. Also NE Jones junior RB/DB Chris Young (5-11, 185, very, very fast) is a player to watch, especially on defense."

Picayune vs. Gulfport:

Picayune 20
Gulfport 14

Josh Carter rushed 30 times for 148 yards, including a 56-yard TD run to cap off a 6 play 80 yard drive late in 1st quarter.
Jack Byrd kicked field goals of 32 and 35 yards and 2 PATs.

From the 8:18 mark of the second quarter until the end of the game, Picayune controlled the ball. Gulfport only had 16 offensive plays (2 of these were punts) as the Maroon Tide offensive line dominated. Picayune had drives of 16 plays - 65 yards ( 32 yard FG); 13 plays -59 yards (4th down failed at Gulfport 35); 6 plays - 33 yds (QB Cole Raiford 3 yd TD run); 4 plays - 13yds (35 yard FG).

Sad note: TE/DE Tony Garces suffered a knee injury late in the game and may be out for a long time, if not the whole season. Picayune will know for sure on Monday.

Gulfport's Bobby Garner was 3-11, 50 yards, no touchdowns. Picayune's defense kept him confused all night.

Smithville vs. Mantachie:

Smithville running back "Matt Grier had 103 yards on 12 carries. He scored 3 TDs, one of which was an 86 pass reception. He did not carry the ball in the 4th quarter. Smithville quarterback Willie Lopez threw for 306 yds and 4 TDs. Mantachie's Adam Lindsey had 173 yds on 28 carries and one TD in a 41 to 7 Smithville victory."

Winona vs. Charleston:

"Went to the Charleston - Winona game last night at Charleston. Charleston was led by 6'0" 170-lb super soph Terry Brown who had 199 total yds: rush 19 for 74, rec 1 for 45, ret 4 for 80, 2-td's and 1 int. Winona was led by junior Tony Townsend with 124 total yrds: rush 19 for 101, rec 1 for 3 yds, return 1 for 20. In particular I was there to watch Kyle Billingsley who did not appear as strong or as quick as the defensive tackle he was facing, 6'1", 238-lb soph David Ray of Charleston who had at least 4 tackles for loss."

Pearl vs Clinton (2 emails):

(1) "You should have been here tonight in Clinton. Clinton pulled out an absolutely awesome high school football game over Pearl High, with the final score being 45-42 on an Andrew Shapley 27-yard field goal with 2 seconds left.

"Gene, it was back and forth for the whole game. Clinton came out and took a quick 7-0 lead, but Pearl responded very quickly to tie it. Pearl took a 28-21 lead into halftime, simply because they had the ball last in the half. Pearl came back out in the second half, and took it all the way down inside the Clinton 5-yard line. But Pearl fumbled the ball into the endzone just as they were about to score and take a 2 TD lead. Clinton had to have that break, considering they hadn't stopped Pearl's high-octane offense and their outstanding QB but once all night. Clinton responded and drove 80 yards to tie the game.

"Both teams traded TDs until it was tied at 42. Clinton, desperate to come up with a defensive stop, was able to stack up Pearl with only a little under 2 minutes left in the game, and forced them to punt it away. Clinton took it over at around their own 30-yard line and proceeded to hand it off time and again to Walker until he helped get Clinton into position for the winning field goal."

(2) "One of the most exciting high school football games of the year. Clinton won on a last second field goal from 27 yards. Dontae Walker scored 5 touchdowns, but they all were short runs. He finished with about 130 yards rushing (that is my guess, I do not have Clinton's Stats). Brett Hazelwood was impressive as a blocking back and also as a ball carrier. He really runs hard.

However, the two most impressive players in the game were Pearl's QB Justin Jenkins and WR Dre Bridges. Jenkins was 13-21 passing for 4 TD's and 248 yards. Bridges caught 6 passes for over 100 yards. Jenkins had two TD passes to Bridges from 26 and 19 yards. Bridges also drew two pass interference penalties on plays in which he may have scored if he had not been practically tackled by the defender who was beaten by Bridges. Jenkins also rushed 5 times for 60 yards. Jenkins connected with Chris Knight for a 75 yard TD pass in which he was scrambling to his left (Jenkins is right-handed), and on the dead run hit Knight in full stride along the sideline. Jenkins also threw a 12 yard TD pass to Kyle Foster."

09/18/98 - Here are the most up-to-date stats for Picayune High School's outstanding junior running back, Josh Carter:
vs Harrison Central ---- 27 attempts, 174 yards and 1 TD.
vs Bogalusa, LA ------- 17 attempts, 92 yards and 0 TD.
vs Pascagoula --------- 34 attempts, 193 yards and 2 TDs (1 rush, 1 rec)

Josh has rushed for 459 yards in three games which is an average of 153 per game. This youngster is making a name for himself and could very well be one of the best seniors in the state next season.

09/17/98 - Sorry for the lateness of this but I would like to ask any of you that are high school officials, please email me your comments about any players you see this season. Your name will never be revealed. Your comments and opinions are very, very important to me.

09/17/98 - Holly Springs Dandy Dozen Jeremy Leseur may be getting all the attention, but he isn't Holly Springs only D-I senior talent. Cedric Stevenson, a 6-0, 215-lb. RB/LB, is also a talented player. Last Friday, he ran for 153 yards and was in on 18 tackles.

09/17/98 - According to one of you, Louisville's linebacker Chris Eaves (6-1, 220, 4.6) has good speed and is a hitter. My source feels he is one of the best linebackers in the state as a junior.

09/16/98 - The Mississippi Stars were rained out last weekend. This weekend's schedule is as follows:
Saturday: Play at West Alabama against the Birmingham All-Stars. Game time is noon.
Sunday: Play at Miss State against the Baton Rouge (La.) All-Stars. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

09/16/98 - Louisville HS has a junior linebacker, Chris Eaves, that has a great deal of potential, according to a source of mine. Chris is also a good student. If any of you have seen him play let me know what you think.

09/16/98 - Defensive back / wingback Chris Ferguson and tailback Bob Adcock, both of whom play for Edinburg HS, had very good game against Clarkdale last Friday night. Chris (5-10, 165) had 1 rush for 18 yds, 1 reception for 66 yds, 1 96-yard kick return for a TD, an interception return for a 40 yard TD, and 12 unassisted tackles. My source was reminded of former Miss State linebacker Bob Boyd when watching Chris. He is smart, anticipates each play and gives 100% on every play. Bob, who also plays with great effort, rushed for 270 yards on 13 carries.

09/16/98 - He hasn't gotten much attention from the so-called recruiting experts, but, according to a Picayune source, Picayune's defensive end Tony Garces (6-5, 230, 370-bench) proved he is a player that should be looked at after having an excellent game against Pascagoula's all-everything tight end Casey Gilbert last Friday night.

09/14/98 - I had a great time at Picayune, Mississippi Friday night. Carey, Barry, Geri, and John gave me the royal treatment. I met them at Stonewall's (Poplarville, MS.) for dinner (great steak, by the way), we then went to Picayune where I met a lot of great Picayune fans. The only thing I regret it having to leave at halftime to head on up to Memphis for the MSU/Memphis football game, Saturday morning. I hope to make a Picayune football game an annual event and take Mary Ann with me next year.

Picayune has several very good football players:

  • Senior kicker Jack Byrd - A definite D-I prospect. Great leg.
  • Senior offensive lineman Kris Robbins - Fast for his size.
  • Junior defensive back Brett Harris - Very fast. Also a great baseball prospect. Throws 87 mph fastball.
  • Junior OL/DE John Feaster. Hard hitter who has excellent potential.
  • Junior running back Josh Carter. Had a great game against Pascagoula.
  • Junior offensive lineman Seth Gouget. Very good lineman who is also an excellent student who has made an outstanding ACT score. Will probably be able to go any college in the country due to his academics.
  • Sophomore running back Brandon McGill. Has good potential.
  • Sophomore LB/NG Dominic Dowdell (6.05, 200, 4.6). An unknown who is playing his first year of football. Has excellent potential.
  • Freshman TE/DE Anthony Hobgood (6-1, 190, 280 bench press). Has potential. Also a great baseball prospect (3B/C).
  • Picayune also has another basketball player, other than Jonathan Bender, who is a D-I prospect. Ricky Bennett is a 6-2 point guard who is an excellent student. He is receiving phone calls from D-I schools. This is Ricky's second year to play for the Picayune Maroon Tide. Last year he played the 2-guard position.

09/14/98 - Houston HS has a sophomore fullback by the name of Shane Stafford (6-1, 220) who has excellent potential, according to a source of mine.

09/14/98 - High school player stats from Friday's games:

  • Taylorsville junior quarterback Jason Campbell - 15-18, 300+ yards, 4 TDs.
  • Smithville senior running back Matt Grier - Gained over 200 yards while scoring 4 TDs. Played very little in the second half.
  • Northeast Lauderdale senior running back James Shelton - Rushed for 190 yards and 1 TD on 19 carries. 153 of these yards were gained in the 1st half.
  • 09/11/98 - Look for a battle of the running backs to take place when Winona and Ethel battle tonight. Ethel's outstanding senior running back Shawn Clark, who has gained 259 yards in his first two games this season, will go against Winona's standout junior running back Tony Townsend.

Ethel also has a couple of other players who we should look out for: Freshman Montez Potts (5-11, 180, Benches 270, 192 yards rushing) and senior fullback John Holman (5-9, 170) who has an excellent vertical leap and is very strong.

09/10/98 - Time to start the Mississippi Stars fall baseball update. As you know, if you have been reading my page for at least a year, the Mississippi Stars is a fall baseball team made up of some of the best high school baseball players in Mississippi. Now on to the update.

  • There are 18 young men on the team. As soon as I receive the names, I will list them.
  • The Miss Stars host the Houma, La., Hogs in a doubleheader this Saturday at Gulf Coast CC. 1st game is at 1:00 p.m. and the 2nd game is at 4:00 p.m.
  • Hattiesburg HS's talented senior Matt Butler takes the mound for the first game and New Hope HS's Kevin Long will pitch the second game.
  • Sunday, the Miss Stars host the New Orleans, La., Spice Team at Pearl River CC. Games times are 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.
  • In the first game, Tupelo HS's Justin Bounds will take the mound for the Miss Stars and Hattiesburg HS's Jeff Lacher will pitch the second game.
  • Go out and support the stars if you are in the area. You will see some great baseball and quite a few future college stars.

09/10/98 - Canton Academy has a sophomore football player by the name of Marty Morgan (FB/LB, 6-4, 220, 4.5/4.6) who has a chance to be a very special player. The rumor is several D-I schools are already looking at him. My source said he is a great young man with a very humble personality.

09/09/98 - A well kept secret (until now) is Winona HS running back Tony Townsend. Tony, who is a junior, is 5-10, 185-lbs with 4.4 speed. He is also an excellent student. Although he had a pulled muscle in the first game and did not play, he played the first half of the second game and rushed for 138 yards on 11 carries. The other running backs played the second half due to the score of the game. Look for this youngster to start garnering attention from college coaches this season.

09/09/98 - Eric Brewer, a former New Hope HS lineman who is now at Pickens Academy (AL), is attracting attention from college coaches this year. Eric, who was thought to have broken his foot last Thursday night, will be playing once again either this Friday night or next Friday night. The break that showed up on the X-ray was actually an old break.

09/08/98 - Sorry for the delay but here are the names of several talented underclassmen from South Panola and Moss Point I promised to post a few days ago:

  • James Dean - Sophomore, 6-2, 212, RB, South Panola HS.
  • Marcus Conner - Sophomore 6-1, 185, QB, South Panola HS.
  • Chris Young - Junior, 6-2, 184, QB, South Panola HS.
  • Damarius Bilbo - Sophomore, 6-3, 185, QB, Moss Point HS.
  • Jason McBeath - Sophomore, 6-2, 165, LB/TE, Moss Point HS.
  • Jason Mosley - Sophomore, 6-3, 229, TE, Moss Point HS.
  • Jeremy Batiste - Junior, 6-4, 255, TE, Moss Point HS.
  • Ed Jones - Sophomore, 5-11, 153, DB, Moss Point HS.
  • Young, Batiste, Jones are all starters. Watch out for Dean. This guy is a major young talent who could be one of the best to ever play at South Panola.

09/07/98 - Newton County Academy's outstanding big man Matthew Roebuck (6-11, 235) has in home visits scheduled with several out of state schools. Matthew, who is very mobile and has the grades, will be showcasing his talent at Millsaps College on September 12th. BTW, Matthew has led Newton County Academy to two state championships.

09/07/98 - Caledonia HS has a starting sophomore defensive tackle, Matt McGraw (6-1, 225) who has good footspeed and is working on his upper body strength.

09/06/98 - Pillow Academy has a place kicker who was impressive last year and has started the year off with a bang. Jonathan Nichols was 8-for-10 kicking field goals last year and kicked 46 and 47-yarders against Jackson Prep two Friday nights ago.

09/06/98 - Smithville HS running back Matt Grier had a great night this past Friday night in a 38 to 12 victory over Nettleton. He ran for 208 yards, had 86 yards receiving and scored 3 touchdowns. He also played on defense most of the night.

09/03/98 - Two Mississippi HS freshmen quarterbacks that could develop into D-I prospects held from Caledonia and Richland. Matt Miller is a 5-9, 150-lb QB from Caledonia. Matt is very fundamentally sound with a good arm. He is expected to grow to the 6-1 / 6-2 range. The second freshman QB is Eric Stringer (6-0, 150-lb) from Richland. He is presently the backup for the varsity team.

09/03/98 - You heard about him first on this site and now the college world has found out about him. Olive Branch lineman James Campbell (Junior, 6-6, 280) camped at Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Memphis this summer and, according to my source, all are ready to offer. If he continues to improve, look for him to be one of the most recruited players in the state next year.

Look for the names of several very talented underclassmen from Moss Point and South Panola on my Friday update. One of the South Panola players has the potential to be one of the very best to ever play his position at South Panola.

09/01/98 - South Pontotoc's J.T. Brown (6-2, 260) had 80 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving against Alcorn Central last Friday night.

09/01/98 - George County HS junior Trey Fryfogle played all but four plays Friday night against Ocean Springs HS. Trey caught 3 TD passes, had 1 interception, 3 kick returns, 4 punt returns and 362 all-purpose yards in George County's 27-24 victory over Ocean Springs.

09/01/98 - Pearl / Magee football game update:
Friday night, Pearl defeated Magee 22-14 in Coach Marcus Boyles debut as the head football coach at Pearl High School. Magee took a 14-0 lead, scoring on their first two possessions of the game. Then Pearl's defense took over and the Pearl offense came alive to score the last 22 points of the game. Justin Jenkins threw a touchdown pass to fellow senior Dray Bridges. Senior Michael Johnson followed with a 20 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Pearl added a 32 yard field goal to take a 15-14 lead. Steven Alexander added an incredible 30+ yard touchdown run to cap off the scoring. Pearl played this game without one of its best defensive players, DB Chris Knight, who separated a shoulder in the pre-season and should return to the line-up soon.

09/01/98 - Leland HS / Indianola Gentry football game report:
I went to the Leland High School vs Indianola Gentry game Friday night and I must say that Milas Randle caught my eye quickly. He had 3 receptions for 166 yards, and one of those receptions was a 96-yard TD. His TD catch was unbelievable. He leapt up between 3 defenders, caught the ball one-handedly, and raced down the field and scored. His second catch was a seam pattern down the middle. The QB under threw the ball by about 6 yards so he had to slam on the breaks, turn around, and catch the ball. After he caught it, he immediatly passed three defenders with amazing footwork. He was trying to cut open through a seam when he was tackled from behind. His 3rd reception was an outlet pass and he ran for 49 yards after the catch.

    09/01/98 - Clarksdale / Greenwood game stats:
Dandy Dozen Tarnaka Counslor had 15 carries for 95 yards.
Toby Hicks had 5 carries for 51 yards 7 yard TD catch.
Mandrell McGregory had 2 catches for 33 yards and a touchdown as well as a returned punt for a touchdown of 54 yards.
Byron Jackson kicked field goals of 25-yards and 30-yards.
Clarksdale had 15 first downs to Greenwood's 8.
139 yards rushing to 108 for Greenwood.
    171 yards passing to Greenwood's 5.
Final Score: Clarksdale 27 Greenwood 8.
