If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

  • A. J. Ray - 41 tackles in 9 games.

10/29/98 - Clarksdale HS (CHS) has several players that have a solid chance to play on Saturdays in a year or two. Senior Brian Barnes, a 6-2, 185-lb WR/DB, could be a steal for someone. Excellent talent, although unknown. A couple of CHS juniors also are looking good: Robert Spivey, a 6-2, 215-lb OLB/DE, is very fast, intense and a good student and A. Haulcy, a 6-2, 200-lb SS, is very athletic looking and plays a tough strong safety.

10/27/98 - Did you know New Hope HS (Columbus, MS) is 6-3 and tied for first place in their district with Houston HS? Of their victories this year, New Hope has defeated Aberdeen 30-22, Tishomingo County 35-7 and Itawamba AHS 32-12. They have continued to play well even after their leading runner, Travis Jones, went down with a season ending knee injury earlier in the year. Players who have stepped forward are Reggie Moore, Lavatis Bush, Raphael Roland, Lynn Colebrook and Demarco Hunter.

10/25/98 - Ripley HS, which has 17 sophomores starting, has a youngster by the name of Clint Jordan (5-10, 160) who starts at both cornerback and wide receiver. In a recent game against New Albany he ran down the New Albany running back and made a touchdown saving tackle that resulted in a fumble. He also had an interception as well as help block a field goal attempt which he ran back for 25 yards.

10/25/98 - St. Aloysius HS in Vicksburg, MS. has three players who may be short on size but not on talent:

  • Jamie Ray - 6-1, 280, Senior lineman. Benches 360, squats 540. According to my source, a very quick lineman.
  • Chris Comes - 5-8, 135, Senior wide receiver/safety. First time player who is an offensive threat.
  • Robert Head - 5-9, 180, Junior linebacker/fullback. Robert, who was a starter last season, is averaging about 13 tackles per game.
  • 10/25/98 - Eric Brewer, a lineman who made 1st Team All-District last year at New Hope HS in Columbus, MS., has help lead his new team, Pickens Academy (Carrollton, Ala.), to a 9-0 start and a birth in the Alabama academy playoffs.

10/22/98 - Sturgis HS has a very good running back by the name of Dawain Dantzler. Against French Camp he ran for 202 yards which was his second straight 200+ game. Another running back to watch is French Camp's sophomore Antwan Carter. Against Sturgis, he ran for over 100 yards and scored 3 TDs. Look for good things from this youngster.

To the person who emailed me this info, I have tried to email you a thank you but my email would not go through. I have also called the number you put on your email but have had no luck contacting you. Please call me at 601-329-7735 during the day or 601-356-9160 at night. I would like to talk to you.

10/21/98 - According to a source of mine, Brian Kelly, a 5-11, 175 OLB/SS senior from Kossuth HS, is having a great year for Kossuth HS which is 8 - 0 on the year. Brian has been doing it all on defense; making key interceptions, recovering fumbles and making tons of tackles.

10/20/98 - Have you heard of Todd Merchant? Todd is a 6-2, 185-lb senior quarterback from Lamar HS, a AAA private school in Meridian, Miss. This season, Todd has passed for 950 yards and 7 TD's while completing 68 of 124 passing attempts. Last year (his first year to play ball), he was 130 for 276 while throwing for over 1,700 yards and 15 TD's.

10/20/98 - Thomas Knight (5-10, 170) is a junior running back for Vicksburg HS. He has rushed for 654 yards on 80 carries (8.2 average). This is his first year to play football since junior high. He attended a Miss State football camp this past summer and opened some eyes with his performance. He is a senior in eligibility. Source: Vicksburg Post article by Ernest Bowker.

10/20/98 - West Union started their season last Thursday night with two wins over Hickory Flat in the West Union Round Robin Tournament. The two-time defending state champion Lady Eagles were led in scoring by junior Jennifer Childers with 30 points, senior Tasha Kitchens with 19 points and junior Lauren Johnson with 13 points. The Eagles were led by seniors Randle Bynum, 27 points, and Joey Baird, 26 points.

10/20/98 - Two sophomore players to watch are:

  • Lerin Pruitt - 6-2, 186, OT/DE, East Webster HS in Cumberland, MS.
  • Jay Biedenhorn - 6-8, 308, Lineman, St. Aloysious HS in Vicksburg, MS.
  • The word I receive about Jay is he is quick and can block and will be heard from for a long, long time.

10/20/98 - Who is the top kicker in Mississippi this year? Some folks say Pillow Academy's junior Jonathan Nichols is. He kicked a 52-yard FG in his last game and all of his kickoffs went into the end zone. He was the top kicker at the Auburn kicking camp last year as a sophomore. He also average over 40 yards per punt and kicked 26 of 27 PATS last year. Plus, he is a good student who has made a qualifying ACT score.

10/20/98 - Here are the latest stats for Trey Fryfogle (Junior, 6-1, 165, 4.6, George County HS):

  • 33 catches for 790 yards, 8 TD's.
  • 3 interceptions.
  • 1,280 all-purpose yards.
  • 10/20/98 - Friday night, South Pontotoc's senior J. T. Brown ran for 181 yards on 32 carries while scoring 4 TD's. So far, Arkansas State, Tulane and UAB have shown the most interest. If you want to see Brown play, South Pontotoc will be playing at Amory this Friday night.

10/20/98 - South Panola's Demetrius Wright had a great game against Tupelo last Friday night, with a 1st quarter interception and several great open field tackles. My source believes he is an outstanding one-on-one cornerback. He also should have the grades to qualify. This is one that could see his stock rise as the season progresses. Other SP players that had good games were running backs Kimario Hentz and Kory Chapman, both of whom ran for over 100 yards each.

10/20/98 - A senior lineback who is a true sleeper is Geoffrey Strickland of Gulfport HS. Geoffrey is not only an excellent football player but an excellent student as well with a B average in advanced classes and a ACT score in the mid 20's. As a junior, he was selected 1st Team All-District as well as other awards.

10/15/98 - Every once in a while I come upon a true sleeper, a player who has talent but has been overlooked for one reason or the other. When I got home yesterday afternoon I checked my fax machine and lo and behold I had info on a true sleeper. His name is Ched Walton and here is his info, according to my source: Tunica Institute of Learning (TIL) (a D1-A private school), senior, DL/OG, 6-5, 265-lbs, 5.0-forty, 325 bench, 400 squat, 500 deadlift. He has also received numerous MPSA state and school honors. Plus, he is also a good student. If you know a college coach, tell him about this youngster. BTW, the telephone number for TIL is (601)363-1064 and, according to the Clell Wade Coaches Directory, his coach's name is Larry Caperton.

10/15/98 - The New Hope Lady Trojans softball team won their 12th district title in 17 seasons Tuesday night with a win at Aberdeen. State playoffs for slow-pitch softball start Saturday, October 17th. New Hope, 22-11, will host Nettleton Thursday night for it's final regular season game and Senior Night.

10/15/98 - Look for additional info on the Madison Central HS players later this week.

10/14/98 - All-District punter Michael Bradshaw (6-1, 200) is having another fine season this year, averaging 40 yards per punt as well as playing tight end and place kicking. He is even playing a little safety on defense. BTW, Michael kicked a 30-yard field goal last Friday night to defeat the always tough Picyaune HS team.

10/14/98 - Here is the latest info on several Madison Central HS players:

The guest clinician is Steve Rieves of Delta State University. There will also be invited guests from the MHSAA and MPSA to give a roundball rules update. The format will include a lecture and on the floor instruction. The clinic starts at the cafeteria and concludes after lunch at the Currie Coliseum.

10/08/98 - Here is a little more info on James Denson, a true sleeper in the Mississippi high school ranks. Although James (senior, 6-3, 180, 4.7) does not throw the ball that much, he is 24-of-41 with 9 TD's and 537 yards this season. He has also rushed for 188 yards and scored 5 TD's. There's more. He also plays safety where he has 38 tackles and 2 interceptions. Not only is he a great athlete, he is also an excellent student and a good kid.

10/07/98 - Here is info on several Madison Central HS players:

10/06/98 - Chris Jones of Florence was selected as the Jackson Touchdown Club Player of The Week for his outstanding performance Friday night.

10/06/98 - The word is Choctaw Central HS's quarterback James Denson has all the tools to play D-I football. His team remains undefeated.

10/05/98 - Florence HS junior receiver/defensive back Chris Jones (5-8, 145) had receptions of 56 and 54 yards last Friday night. He also scored on a 36-yard reverse He also had 2 punt returns for 36 yards and 1 interception. In the past two games, Chris has averaged 119 receiving yards and 18 yards on punt returns. For the year, he's had 4 interceptions (two were game savers in the 4th quarter).

10/05/98 - Brookhaven HS has a starting TE, Fred Perkins, who is only a sophomore. Fred is 6-2, 205-lbs, runs a 4.6 forty, is a great youngster and an honor roll student.

Katherine has maintained a perfect 4.00 g.p.a. on the Accelerated Track at Indianola Academy.

10/02/98 - Blake Jones, who played tight end as a sophomore, is now the starting quarterback for Clinton High School. Although Blake is a 6-4, 220-lb pro style drop back passer, when he runs he punishes linebackers and defensive backs like a fullback. Besides being a division-I prospect as a quarterback, he is a division-I or higher level baseball prospect as a catcher.

10/01/98 - Here is additional info on Mize High School players Timmy Blackwell, a junior, and Derrick Duckworth:

Blackwell benches 240 and squats 450. Last week he rushed for 171 yards against Taylorsville. Duckworth, as a freshman, led the team in tackles with 108.

10/01/98 - Did you know South Pontotoc's J.T. Brown (6-2, 270) recently ran for over 220 yards against North Pontotoc? Look for Brown to play TE or OL in college. So far, Tulane has shown the most interest.

10/01/98 - An Oxford HS player to watch is Derek Johnson. According to my source, he has great speed and is a great offensive threat. If you know anything else about Johnson (size, stats), email me at swindoll@genespage.com.
