If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

11/30/98 - Clarksdale's Dandy Dozen running Tarnaka Counslor has rushed 72 times for 538 yards and 6 touchdowns in the three playoff games for Clarksdale.

  • 1st round against Oxford 15 carries 277 yards 1 td.
  • 2nd round against Louisville 20 carries 123 yards 2 tds
  • North 4A Championship against Kosciusko 27 carries 238 yards 3 tds
  • His totals for the year are 190 carries for 1632 yards, which is an average of 8 yards per carry. He also had 20 catches for 240 yards, 12 yard avg. and 24 touchdowns.

11/25/98 - St. Andrews' (SA) senior Reed Stacy scored 34 points against Hinds AHS in a double overtime SA victory.

11/23/98 - Two Starkville Academy high school football players have made the All-Conference First Team in 1-AAAA. They are Travis Garner and Trey Wall. Travis was selected as a Kick Off and Punt Returner and Trey as the Tight End. Trey led the conference in receptions with 24 for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns. Trey (6-1, 205) is also a very good pitcher who has a 83-85 mph fastball.

11/23/98 - Hatley HS basketball standout Jessica Dunlap scored a team high 25 points in a 62-60 loss to Bruce and in a win over Itawamba AHS, scored 21 points.

    11/20/98 - Remember this name:
Clint Hoots, an outstanding 6-5, 225-lb. left handed pitcher/first baseman from Hatley School, in Amory, MS., has a 84-86 mph fastball with a very adequate curveball and an outstanding changeup. He has won 24 games while losing 8 with 8 saves since the 8th grade. Among his honors include playing at the Team One regional in Lexington, Kentucky and playing in the Mississippi State Games in 1997 and 1998. Not only is Clint an outstanding pitcher, he is also a very good hitter with a .404 career batting average. He already has a qualifying ACT score and is expected to have the necessary core course requirements.

11/20/98 - Amory HS has a senior offensive lineman Chris Barnett (6-3, 280) who, according to his coach, Bobby Hall, is a definite D-I prospect. Chris has started since his freshman year and is an "A" student. So far, Ole Miss and Ohio State have shown the most interest although he also has an interest in Miss State.

11/19/98 - Tupelo HS, which won the state's boy's track championship last year, is expected to win it again this coming track season. Several of the top athletes on the Tupelo track team who are expected to make major contributions are:

  • George Purnell - Excellent sprinter with 4.42 forty speed. Also a good triple jumper.
  • Deandre' Eiland - 110 hurdles / 14.2 secs, 300 hurdles / 38.8 secs.
  • Tyson Quinn - High jumper with great leaping ability.
  • Josh Long - Great speed. Runs the 110 and 300 hurdles.
  • Donald Tucker - Outstanding shotput and discus thrower.
  • Jeffery Huddleston - Last year's state champ in the long jump with a jump over 24 feet.
  • 11/19/98 - One of the best kept secrets in Mississippi high school basketball is Marcus Calcote. Marcus, who plays for Trinity Episcopal, a 1-A academy school in Natchez, is averaging over 30 ppg. His lowest output this season has been 33 points with a high of 47 points. According to my source, Delta State has taken notice of Marcus. Marcus transferred from Natchez HS this past year.

11/19/98 - The Columbia Wildcats have several seniors who have talent, maybe even D-I talent: Michael Bradshaw, Kicker/Punter (40+ average punting); Donivan Walker, Running Back (2,035 yards this season); and Nick Davis, Linebacker (140-150 tackles this season).

11/19/98 - St. Andrews' Reed Stacy scored 39 points against St. Joe Jackson last Friday night.

11/19/98 - East Webster HS has a sophomore football player by the name of Lerin Pruitt. Lerin, who is 6-2, 200-lbs, is a defensive end who benches 185, squats 210 and deadlifts 375. With continued effort in the weight room and drills to decrease his footspeed, Lerin can become a very solid player. One of the highlights of his young career includes an interception he ran back for a 75 yard touchdown to help his team capture a division win.

11/18/98 - Hatley HS's Jessica Dunlap scored 25 points in a 63-43 victory over Hamilton HS. Jessica is averaging 27.5 pts per game after 4 games.

    11/14/98 - Mississippi Stars Update:

This past weekend the Mississippi Stars won the Ole Miss Wooden Bat Tourney by going undefeated in 4 games. On Friday night the Stars played the Birmingham, AL All-Stars and Kevin Long, LHP, from New Hope went the distance for a 2-1 victory. Saturday afternoon the Stars took on the Chattanooga Cyclones with Dustin Cliburn, RHP, from Hillcrest Christian Academy, going the distance on the mound for a 4-3 win. Saturday evening the Stars played the Memphis, TN All-Stars and won 6-0 in a rain shortened victory with Clay Godwin, RHP from Tupelo High School picking up the win. The Stars played the Orange County, California Yankees on Sunday for the championship and Justin Bounds, LHP, from Tupelo High School pitched a complete game 4 hitter. His battery mate, Catcher Reed Hawkins, also from Tupelo High School, had the game-winning hit for the Stars with a 400-ft grand slam HR over the left field fence at Swayze Field in Oxford. The victory over the California Yankees was of special significance due to the fact that the California team was made up of players who participated in the area code games in California this year. According to my source, it was very encouraging to see the Mississippi players do so well against that kind of competition, especially with wooden bats.

The Stars are scheduled to play at Gulf Coast CC this Sat at 1:30 and 3:00 and again on Sunday at noon and 2:30 against Covington, LA and Houma, LA. respectively.

11/14/98 - A player to watch is Fred Perkins, a sophomore TE from Brookhaven HS. Two Fridays ago, he caught 3 passes for over 100 yards (2 TDs) against South Pike (7th ranked in the state). According to my source, he is a definite blue chipper.

11/14/98 - Jessica Dunlap Update: Jessica, who plays for Hatley HS, scored 36 points in Hatley's season opener against Okolona. In the preseason games Jessica scored 29 and 20 points.

11/14/98 - Players (seniors to to junior) update:

Bernard Sykes - Calhoun City HS Dandy Dozen senior player is now playing linebacker and some running back. He is now down to 255 pounds.
Clint Hoots - Senior from Hatley HS who has moved back to tight end from quarterback where he was playing early in the season.
O.J. Moore - A senior from Okolona HS who is not well known but who is looking very good at the defensive back position. Had two interceptions against Bruce a week ago. Also plays quarterback.
Jeremy Poindexter - Junior tailback from Bruce HS who is fast and has a good head on his shoulders.

11/11/98 - Former New Hope (Columbus, MS.) HS football player Eric Brewer (now at Pickens Academy in Carrollton, AL.) recently made the AISA All-State team. Eric has received quite a bit of attention from recruiters this year and has unofficially visited Ole Miss, Arkansas, Middle Tennessee State and Samford.

11/08/98 - This info was seen in the Meridian Star:

Philadelphia head football coach Steve Cheatham quote about Choctaw Central HS's QB James Denson: "James is probably the best quarterback in the state. I haven't seen them all, and I don't want to take anything away from a kid, but if someone doesn't recruit him, they're missing out."

BTW, James had 218 all purpose yards against Philadelphia.

11/08/98 - Here is one senior prospect and several freshmen prospects from Southaven HS:

  • Jeff Biggs - Senior, wide receiver, great hands.
  • Gary Scott Gabbert - Freshman, QB/DB, 5-7, 148, 4.7.
  • Charles Tindall - Freshman, RB/MLB, 5-7, 198, 200 bench, 250 squat.
  • John Moran - Freshman, WR/DB, 5-10, 4.8.
  • 11/06/98 - I've had a couple of sources mention a QB by the name of Robert Kent (6-4, 190). According to one of these sources, Robert, who plays at Gentry HS, is a better passing QB than Newton's Allen Tillman. This season, he has thrown for over 2,100 yards and 26 touchdowns. BTW, he also plays tennis and basketball. Academically, he is a great student (3.8 gpa and qualifying ACT) who has an interest in medicine.

11/02/98 - I'm puzzled. Booneville HS quarterback Chuck Spearman (6-2) , a two-year starter, helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2A State Championship last year and has lead the Blue Devils to an 8-0 start this year while completing 78 of 148 passes for 12 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He is also a Mississippi finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. To be nominated for this honor, the athlete has to maintain a B+ average in the classroom, participate in sports and be active in his/her community. He has done all this but is not receiving a lot of attention from D-I college recruiters. All I can say is if you are a college recruiter looking for a strong armed QB, then Chuck may be your man. Oh, by the way, he won the long throw contest at the Ole Miss summer football camp this past summer. He won against the likes of Kevin Fant, Eli Manning and Allen Tillman, three of the top QBs in the South.

11/02/98 - A Mount Olive HS player to watch is senior wide out Eric Brown (5-10, 150). Last year he had 19 receptions for 582 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also returned punts and kickoffs. He made All-Division 8-1A First Team as a wide receiver. Other honors included the Hattiesburg American All-Area Team and Covington County All-Area Team.

11/02/98 - Senior punter John Weaver, of Warren Central HS in Vicksburg, has punted for 42 yards per punt the last four games, included in that average was a splendid punt of 73 yards (58 in the air). Another indication of how good John is were the comments by the West Monroe (LA.) HS coach after playing Warren Central. They sent 10 men on every punt and didn't block a single punt. That is the first time this year that they did not block a punt in a game. This is a youngster that should be looked at by any school that is looking for a good punter.

11/02/98 - Sophomore running back Shane Stafford, of Houston HS, rushed for 239 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 carries against New Hope HS last Friday night. According to my source, Shane may be the best running back to ever play at Houston.
