If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

Tupelo Daily Journal Online High School Page

12/28/98 - Walnut HS offensive lineman Michael Wilbanks has once again made the All-Tippah County Team this year. Michael, who is a junior this year, is a player to watch for next year.

12/27/98 - A Mississippi high school basketball player to watch: Derrick Houston is a 6-5 Meridian HS player who transferred from Clarksdale (MS) HS last year. Derrick, who is a junior, is averaging in the 15/20 ppg range for Meridian this year. Watch this youngster the next two years. According to my source, he has a chance to be a good one.

12/25/98 - South Jones High School has a junior football player who has received quite a bit of attention. His name is Calvin Ousby and he is a 6-4, 315-lb offensive lineman with 5.0 speed according to my source.

12/25/98 - Tupelo's Dennis Buse (6-1, 175) helped Tupelo to a win over Jackson Jim Hill with a 23 point game. He also had 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals while turning the ball over just 2 times.

12/24/98 - Bruce High School's Mario Welch and Chris Bell combined for 60 points against Okolona HS. Mario scored 40 points and Chris 20. Mario hit several 3 pointers in one of the three overtimes and Chris hit a 3-pointer to put the game into the 3rd overtime.

12/19/98 - High School and Juco players to watch, according to a source of mine:

  • Maurice Williams - Sophomore guard, Murrah HS. Number 1 basketball player in the Class of 2001? Maybe, according to my source. Deadly 3-point shooter. A goto guy who can take over a game. Possibly the best player on a team that has C-L Dandy Dozen player Jimmy Boykins, a Western Kentucky signee.
  • Reggie Taylor - Junior guard, Brandon HS. Great outside shooter.
  • Doug Kelly - Senior center, Brandon HS. Awesome post player. Outside shot could use work but dominant down low.
  • Tim Henderson - Former Yazoo City HS player. My source wasn't sure of this but he believes Tim is currently at Coahoma CC. Great all-around player who my source felt was the most complete player he saw at last year's State Championships. Loves to dunk the ball.
  • 12/18/98 - Here is the latest update on Caledonia HS football player Matt McCraw. Matt, a 10th grader who will not be 16 until March, 1999, benches 275, squats 375 and deadlifts 465. He plays on the defensive line. Matt is definitely a player to watch.

12/18/98 - Meridian HS baseball player info from a source of mine:

  • Mario Scott - Very versatile. Can play 3rd, 2nd, SS and OF. Clocked at 4.39 in the forty. Great bat speed.
  • Dale Hudson - OF, good arm, great speed.
  • Michael Heresey - OF, outstanding arm, great bat with power.
  • Travis Cornish - Pitcher, high 80's, great size (6-3).
  • 12/18/98 - According to a source of mine, Clinton HS has a junior 1B/RHP named John Robert "J.R." Burks who throws in the 84-86 mph range. Great kid and good student. Hits and throws right-handed.

12/17/98 - Hatley HS girl's basketball player Jessica Dunlap, in the past two weeks, has been selected the Daily-Journal (Tupelo, MS) player of the week and The Clarion-Ledger player of the week. In her last two games, she has averaged 41 points and 11 rebounds.

12/17/98 - I will have info on several Meridian HS baseball players tomorrow morning. To the person who emailed the info to me, I tried to email you back but my email would not go through to either email address you sent me. Thanks for the info.

12/15/98 - Bruce HS has a couple of guards that bear watching. Mario Welch, a 5-5 guard, and Chris Bell, a 6-0 guard, scored 47 points and 18 points (four 3-pointers) in a loss to Calhoun City in the Tri-County Tournament.

12/13/98 - I bet very few of you have heard of this Mississippi HS senior football player. Justin Mellon, a 5-10, 170-lb RB/LB from Lumberton HS, has 4.5 speed, is a very hard hitter, and an uncanny ability to be around the ball, according to a source of mine. My source feels he could make an outstanding defensive back in college.

12/13/98 - Here is the latest on Hatley HS standout basketball player Jessica Dunlap:

  • November 25th - In a 65-41 win over Mooreville, Jessica scored 33 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 5 blocks.
  • December 11th - Jessica scored 47 points in a 71-64 win over Smithville.
  • 12/11/98 - Do you know who Dennis Buse is? Well, you will after reading this. Dennis, a 6-1, 175-lb senior guard from Tupelo HS, is averaging 23.4 ppg, 5.6 apg, 4.0 spg, and 5.0 rpg after five games (Tupelo is 5-0). Dennis attended the MSU Basketball Camp where he won the 3-point shooting contest. He also attended the Ole Miss Basketball Camp and Joe Dean Colonade All-Star Basketball Camp where he was selected as a Top 10 Camp Participant (out of 130 campers). Dennis, who is a very good student, has received letters from colleges in Georgia, MSU and the U.S. Naval Academy, among others. He was a ball boy for Ole Miss for three years.

12/10/98 - Here are the names of several Mississippi high school baseball players to watch this upcoming season, according to a very reliable source of mine:

  • Brian Reed - Amory HS senior RHP. 6-1 with a fastball that reaches the 90 range. Could really be special.
  • Jake Fagan - Amory HS junior 3B/OF. 6-3, 190, excellent grades. Can play anywhere. One to watch the next two years.
  • Chris Freeman - Oak Hill Academy senior OF. 5-7, 155, excellent speed, great defense. Great kid who was All-Conference last year while leading the league in steals.
  • 12/10/98 - Who is the most overlooked football player in the Mississippi HS ranks this year? How about senior running back Deloise Moore (6-2, 195) of St. Martin HS in Ocean Springs, Miss. According to my source, Deloise, who was hurt all this season, has 4.4/4.5 speed and is a state champion power lifter. My source feels he is headed to Ole Miss at the moment. He could wind up being a steal for Ole Miss, according to my source.
