04/30/99 - Marshall Academy (Holly Springs, MS.) finished first in their district by defeating Heritage Academy (Columbus, MS.) 9-2 behind the strong arm of junior Michael Novarese. Novarese was clocked at 91 MPH.
Final regular season stats for junior pitchers Maholm and Burch:
Marshall Academy will play their first game of the playoffs at Indianola Academy Tuesday at 5 p.m. They will get together for a double header (if necessary) at Marshall Academy Friday at 5 p.m.
04/29/99 - Kosciusko HS (KHS) defeated Clarksdale 14 - 2 last Thursday in Game 1 of the playoffs. Brad Hutchinson, Willie Tubby (grand slam), and Brett McCool homered to support McCool's pitching.
In Game 2, Saturday, KHS, with strong pitching from Andre Truss, led Clarksdale 13 - 4 with one out in the 5th when the rains hit. KHS had to drive the 2 1 /2 hours back there Monday to resume Game 2. High winds (Tornado?) hit at game time crumbling the Clarksdale visitor dugout. Several KHS players, managers, and Coach Pullen were hit by debris with one scorekeeper seeking medical attention at the local hospital.
Probably due to State wide testing. KHS and Clarksdale are now scheduled to resume Game 2 this Friday (as other schools start Round 2) with the location unannounced at this time. If KHS holds on and wins, they will travel to New Hope for Game 1 of Round 2 next Monday. Game 2 of that series would be Tuesday in Kosciusko.
04/26/99 - The Brookhaven Panthers trailed Quitman 4-1 Saturday in game 2 of their best of three playoff series before a torrential downpour flooded the Quitman field. The Panthers made the 2 1/2 hour bus ride for the second time in as many days on Sunday and found themselves facing a 10-5 deficit going into the top of the seventh. As they have done all season, the young Panthers battled back from adversity. Freshman Ben Goza stepped to the plate and hit a towering grand slam home run (8th of the season) to provide the final 12-11 margin of victory. Sophomore Miguel Banks (5-0) was the winning pitcher and senior Chris Kennedy (6-3) got his first save of the year. With the win, the Panthers advance to the South State semifinals and face the winner of the Petal/East Central series. Game 1 of the second round will be Friday at Brookhaven. Game time is set tentatively for 7:00 p.m.
04/23/99 - Correction: Caledonia HS football player Matt McCraw is a junior-to-be, not a senior-to-be. BTW, Matt runs the 40 in 5.0 seconds. Not bad for a 6-1, 233-lb. sophomore lineman.
04/23/99 - Brookhaven HS defeated Quitman last night 3-0. Sophomore SS Cayce Wallace got the game winning RBI in the bottom of the fifth driving in Calvin Bowman. Senior Chris Kennedy (6-3) got the complete game shutout while allowing just one baserunner to get to third base. The Panthers play Saturday at Quitman at 6:00.

These five individuals will now move on the the State Tournament on May 3 and 4.
04/22/99 - Chris Chambless, the head football coach at Caledonia (MS) HS, has started a honor club called the 900-lb club at Caledonia. Any football player who lifts a total of 900 pounds in the combined lifts of the Bench, Squat and Deadlift earns the honor of joining the 900 Club. The members of it are as follows:
Two other players to watch on Caledonia's team are sophomores-to-be Leon Johnson, 5-9, 162, 4.61, 865 pounds and Chris Waddel, 5-7, 135, 4.54, 700 pounds.

04/21/99 - Interesting tidbit from South Louisiana yesterday. Gabe Ashford a junior pitcher for Southern University in Baton Rouge via Starkville, MS., pitched a no-hitter two weeks ago against Arkansas - Pine Bluff. This past Sunday he topped that by pitching the 1st perfect game in Southern's history again beating Arkansas - Pine Bluff 12 - 0 in an abbreviated 5 inning game due to the mercy rule.

04/20/99 - From one of you:
It's looking like Marshall Academy (MA) will be the top seed in their district playoffs. MA split with Kirk Academy this weekend. Paul Maholm lost the first game 4-1. The second game was won by MA 7-6 in extra innings (9th). Michael Novarese started the game and fell behind early. Jason Burch came in and pitch his best game of the year only giving up 1 run. MA came back and tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the 7th on a Paul Maholm 2-run home run. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Garrett Elliott scored the winning run as Kirk tried to pick him off of 3rd but threw the ball away.
MA won Monday night at Pillow Academy 11-10 as Michael Novarese won. The big shots were home runs by Garrett Elliott and Justin Hall. Elliott finished 2 for 3 including the home run (his 5th).
MA will play a huge series this week in Columbus with Heritage Academy. Look for Maholm, Burch, and Novarese to pitch.

In the two games Novarese went 7 for 7 including 3 home runs, 3 doubles, and a single.
04/12/99 - Watch out for a senior-to-be running back at Tupelo HS by the name of George Purnell. George, who has legit 4.4 speed and good size for a running back, has played behind some great running backs the past two years but is now really to show how good he can be. Keep an eye on him. I predict he has a good chance to be one of the top running backs in Mississippi this coming season.
04/12/99 - Here are a few stats from the last two Walnut HS baseball games.
Walnut 11, Ashland 1:
Walnut 9, Falkner 3:

According to my source, Madison Central's outstanding shortstop Brad Hutto, an MSU signee, should be back from his ankle injury in 2 to 6 weeks. His ankle injury, which occurred a week or two ago, did not require surgery.
04/11/99 - West Union HS's Lee Gates, in a extremely rare feat, hit 2 grand slams in one inning Friday and also pitched a complete-game 15-0 shutout against H.W. Byers HS. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Russell went 2 for 3 with a double and triple.

04/10/99 - Marshall Academy's Paul Maholm, in my opinion one of the top 5 junior baseball players in the state of Mississippi, had 19 K's in a 3-1 victory over Kirk Academy of Grenada. This brings his strikeout total to 80 for the season in just over 35 innings.
04/10/99 - The Southaven Chargers (17-4) defeated Tupelo High School 5 to 2 Friday night. Senior lefty Donnie Corey threw the 7-hit complete game victory while striking out 10. His season totals are now 80 K's, 10 walks and 8 hits and an 0.20 ERA. He is having a great season. If you want to see Marshall Academy's two other outstanding pitchers Michael Novarese and Jason Burch in action, come to Marshall Academy in Holly Springs on Friday.
04/07/99 - The Brookhaven HS Panthers moved to 15-9 overall and 9-1 in the district by defeating Crystal Springs 21-0. Amazingly, senior Cody Emerson pitched his second perfect game of the season (both against C.S.) getting 10 Ks. Leading hitters for the Panthers were freshman Ben Goza with a homer (6th) and a single, junior B.J. Smith with a homer (1st), and freshman Seth Flynn with 3 singles. The Panthers return to action in a key district contest Friday hosting rival McComb at 5:00.
04/06/99 - Senior lefty Trey Wall, of Starkville Academy, got his third victory of the season with a five-hitter, 11-3 victory against Washington School. Trey also struck out six while walking one. He also showed his hitting ability by hitting a homer, double and single.
Starkville Academy, ranked 2nd in the state, also defeated #1 ranked Hillcrest 15-10 behind the pitching of Nelson Prouty and Joby Garner.
04/06/99 - Kosciusko HS has a player that is hitting the cover off the ball. Brent Tyler is hitting over .600 with 3 home runs and 12 doubles. He is also an excellent defensive player. Brent was an all-district quarterback for the Whippets.
04/06/99 - The Brookhaven Panthers defeated the Forest Hill Rebels 12-7 and lost a 10-inning heartbreaker to 10th ranked Northwest Rankin 3-2. The Panthers moved to 14-9 on the season; 8-1 in the district.
Chad Byrne led the Panthers against the Rebels with a single and his first career home run. Dontae Dixon also had 3 singles. Freshman James McCall got his first career win for the Panthers.
Senior Chris Kennedy went the distance for the Panthers in the loss to N.W. Rankin. Kennedy gave up only seven hits and threw only 110 pitches in the 10-inning effort.
04/05/99 - This past weekend, Picayune HS saw their 18-game winning streak broken with a 5-2 loss to Gulfport. However, Picayune came back and defeated Poplarville 18-8. Picayune's Justin Dunhurst and Jeremy Guidry hit home runs in the Picayune victory. Picayune is now 19-2 for the season with two very important district games this week, Oak Grove (away) on Tuesday night and #3 Petal (home) Friday night.
04/03/99 - Starkville HS has a couple of 10th graders who bear watching in the future: David Ammon and Austin Wilson. David is a pitcher on the JV squad and Austin is the JV catcher. David pitched a five-inning, three-hit, one-run game the other day. He walked 1 and struck out 6. I was also told that Austin is the leading hitter on the JV squad. Austin has played on the varsity team a few times this season.
04/03/99 - Picayune baseball, ranked 6th in the state, defeated Biloxi 9 to 6. Sophomore pitcher Andy Harper (3-1 on the season) got the win. Picayune also defeated #7 Laurel 4 to 2. Senior pitcher Bubba Dobson (7-0) was the winning pitcher. Picayune has now won 18 straight games.
04/03/99 - It is rumored that Central Holmes Academy has a senior baseball player by the name of Gwin Sharpe who is a very talented SS/P. He has struck out 15 batters in a game this year, is 4-0 on the mound, hits solidly with power (5 homers in 15 games last season) and is a very good fielder with a good arm. He was All-Conference in football, basketball and baseball and is also a very good student.
Another Central Holmes Academy player who has a chance to be a good one is Wynn Diggs, who is a freshman Pitcher/Catcher starter for CHA.
04/03/99 - Matt McGraw (6-1.5, 240, So., DL, Caledonia HS) has gotten several invitations to college football camps this summer, including Alabama and Ole Miss. According to my source, Matt is a good student who is in the 900-lb club (lift a total of at least 900 pounds in 3 weightlifting categories) that Caledonia HS Head Football Coach Chambliss has put in place at Caledonia.
04/02/99 - The Brookhaven HS Panthers defeated South Pike 9-0 Thursday. Junior Chris Bale (4-2) pitched a no-hitter and recorded 15 strikeouts for the Panthers. The Panthers were led at the plate by Chad Byrne and Ben Goza with 2 doubles apiece. The win moved the Panthers to 13-8 overall and 8-1 in district play.
04/02/99 - Hayden Sullivant, a junior-to-be running back from North Delta School (MPSA), has been clocked at 11.4 in the 100 meters and 53.1 in the 400 meters.
04/02/99 - Charleston HS will be a team to watch the next two years. With the loss of only 2 starters and returning players such as D-I prospects Terry Brown (Jr, 6-0, 180, RB, 18 TD's) and David Ray (Jr, 6-3, 240, OL/DL) as well as junior-to-be RB/LB Ezekial Davis (5-10, 180) and senior-to-be QB/P Jason Duren Charleston could be a force in their division.
04/01/99 - A couple of others athletes to watch in the State Powerlifting Championship Meet (April 16th & 17th at Madison Central HS) are Kenyardia Johnson, of Grenada, who set a new bench press record in the Super Heavyweight Division with a lift of 400 pounds and St. Martin's Deloise Moore who squatted 625, benched 330 and deadlifted 600. Moore, a senior, is also a very good running back.
