06/30/99 - Just received more info on a couple of Caledonia HS senior-to-be baseball players. I already mentioned Lance Dawkins a couple of days ago. Well, I have more. Lance (6-2, 160), according to my source, has the makings of a power hitter. He not only has quick hands as an infielder but also as a hitter. All he lacks is the confidence. His fastball normally clocks in the 83 range with a high of 85. Look for this to increase as he feels out. He definitely has the potential to play on the D-I level. Another Caledonia player to watch is Chris Wright. Chris, who is 5-9, is a solid infielder with quick hands and a solid arm. He bats left and throws right. My source said watching him play makes you think of MSU's Chris Lotterhos.
06/29/99 - Here are some of the stats for the first four games the Mississippi Stars team played in the Junior Sunbelt Classic in Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago:
In the first game, which was won by Georgia 7 to 2, the hitting stars were:
In the second game, Mississippi defeated California 11 to 3, the hitting stars were:
In the third game, won by Arizona 7 to 5, the hitting stars were:
In the fourth game, Mississippi defeated Texas 9 to 1 , the hitting stars were:
06/28/99 - Caledonia HS has a baseball player who, according to a pro scout friend of mine, looks to be one of the top infielders in the state of Mississippi. Lance Dawkins, a senior-to-be who plays 2B/SS for Caledonia, has very good speed in the 60-yard dash, excellent hands and actions with a good arm and athletic body. The word is his dad was also a very good athlete. Guess I had better do a better job of scouting the Caledonia players.
According to my friend, Mississippi has the best group of athletes in the last four years. In fact, there is a solid group of ten kids who have a chance to sign D-I scholarships next year. You guys help me out following these youngsters.
06/28/99 - Tomorrow, I will begin a three-part update on how the Mississippi Stars (a baseball team comprised of some of the top seniors-to-be in Mississippi) did in the tournament in Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago. The MS. Stars, coached by New Hope HS head baseball coach Stacy Hester, were 2 and 5 for the tournament, and wound up 5th in the 8-team tournament. Two of their losses were by 1 run and one was by 2 runs. If you follow high school baseball in Mississippi, I believe you will enjoy reading these updates.
06/27/99 - Mossy Oak, of West Point, MS., is sponsoring a 11-13 Babe Ruth program, a Junior Legion and Senior Legion program, and a semi-pro program this summer (all of these programs are based out of West Point, MS). The long term plans are for the semi-pro league to be a league similar to the Cape Cod League (a summer college league) so that college players from the south can play in the south. Coach Randy Palmer (a former standout Delta State baseball player), of Oak Hill Academy (West Point, MS) has organized these programs.
06/24/99 - I confirmed that Amory HS baseball players Rory Thornton and Brian Reed did sign with Meridian CC. The word is the Yankees, who drafted Brian, will do a draft and follow. What that means is if he does well next season, they will strongly consider signing him prior to next year's draft. My source also gave me a few of Rory's stats. He hit for a .434 average with 5 home runs, 30 RBIs and 23 stolen bases (stole home 5 times). He also struck out just 5 times, and fielded at a 1.000% clip.
06/21/99 - Indianola Academy has an up-and-coming football player by the name of Stephen Arant. Stephen, who will be a 10th grader this coming season, is a 6-2 QB/DB/WR who helped lead the Lt. Colonels to two straight conference championships. He passed for over 800 yards (ran for 350) and threw for 11 TDs, while rushing for 3 others. Stephen, according to my source, has a very good arm and good hands. He also plays baseball, basketball and track. Look for Stephen to attend several football camps this summer.
06/20/99 - Update on Meridian HS tight end/long snapper Tyler Richardson: Tyler, who will be a junior this year, has increased his bench-press to 240 pounds (an increase of 75 pounds in the past year), and his squat from 265-lbs to 460-lbs during the same period. His vertical leap is now up to 30.5 inches and he has decreased his 40-speed. Tyler not only excels on the field but in the classroom as well as evident by his 3.8 gpa and his membership in the National Honors Society and FCA. According to my source, Tyler has attended or will attend summer camps at Auburn, Troy State and Miss State.
06/19/99 - Here's the latest info on Clinton HS long snapper/offensive lineman Matthew Pulliam. Matthew, who is now up to 6-3, 273-lbs., has received letters from LSU, ALA, Ole Miss, Auburn, Samford and Hinds CC. According to my source, he will be attending camps at Samford, LSU and Ole Miss. The word is he is consistently snapping long snaps in the 0.7 range. Matthew is also a left-handed pitcher who is 2-0 on the season in American Legion ball.
06/19/99 - The latest word on Harrison Central HS junior-to-be running back/defensive back Isiah Martin is he is now 5-9, 195-lbs, with a bench of 315 and a squat of 425. According to my source, he runs in the 4.5-4.6 range. This past year he led Harrison Central in interceptions with five.
06/17/99 - There are several outstanding players in the Delta that I have just found out about. According to my source, Anthony Webb, junior, Leland HS, has excellent skills and can pitch and hit with power; John Morgan, junior, Washington School, lead his team in home runs, slugging percentage and batting average this past season; and Cody Johnson, junior, Indianola, has good pop in his bat.
Other Delta players are T.L. Wesson HS's Jimmy Davenport, 6-4, 190, WR, senior, excellent speed and hands, very good grades, and Devonte Johnson, 6-0, 175, senior, excellent flanker, also very good grades.
06/16/99 - I was told that Hinds AHS QB Arthur Robinson is now 6-1, 200-lbs, a gain of 20 pounds since last season. Even with this added weight, he continues to maintain his 4.7 speed in the forty. According to my source, Arthur is receiving mail from Jackson State, Alcorn, Miss. Valley, Delta State, Southern University and Belhaven. Arthur has also received questionnaires from Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, USM, Auburn, UAB, Alabama and Memphis. My source also mentioned that Arthur would be throwing to Otis Harris, a 4.4 speedster who is the defending state 2A champ in the 100 and 200-meter dash, this season.
06/16/99 - Clinton HS has a junior-to-be middle linebacker by the name of William Gavin who was named to the All-Conference Team this past season. My source feels he has the chance to be a very good player as he develops.
06/14/99 - Starkville Post 13 defeated Corinth 13-0 Friday night in a tournament in Starkville. Travis Garner was 2 for 3 with a double, a single and 4 RBI's. Trey Wall started on the mound, working a 10-run rule 5-inning complete game shutout. Wall had 4 K's and 2 walks, while pitching a one-hitter. Wall also had two doubles, the first off the top of the right centerfield wall, with the other off the top of the big wall in dead center.
06/13/99 - The word is Walnut HS's senior-to-be baseball player Trave Hopkins had a great tournament in Starkville this weekend. Against one of the top senior pitchers from this past season, Brian Reed of Amory, he was 1 for 2. His base hit was a gapper to left-center while his out was a line out to third base. In another tournament game, Trave hit a ball to the centerfield wall, which was 380 feet away from home plate. I was also told a major league scout was so impressed with Trave that he is planning on telling college coaches about him. Remember, you heard about Trave Hopkins on Gene's Page first.
06/10/99 - Hattiesburg HS keeps churning them out. Josh Grant, a 6-6, 215-lb, pitcher, had his fastball clocked in the mid-to-high 80's this past season. He's not a bad hitter either. What makes this more impressive is he recently turned 15 years old. I guess you could say this is a youngster to watch the next few years.
06/08/99 - Eupora HS has an up-and-coming freshman football player who bears watching the next four years. His name is Cliff Davis and he is a 6-4, 160-lb, quarterback. If any of you are from Eupora, let me know what you know about this youngster. My source feels like he has the chance to be a good one.
06/07/99 - West Point HS has a couple of baseball seniors-to-be that bear watching next season. Walter Bounds, who is 6-0, 195-lbs, has hit around .400 with 8 home runs the past two seasons. Ben Earnest batted about .400 with 4 home runs his sophomore season. As a junior, his season was cut short due to a non-sports related injury.
06/05/99 - Crystal Springs High School has a sophomore-to-be girls basketball player by the name of Ebony Jenkins who, as a freshman, was a starter and the leading scorer for Crystal Springs.
