If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

Tupelo Daily Journal Online High School Page

07/29/99 - According to a source of mine, Picayune High QB Cole Raiford (6-3, 215-lbs, good student, good kid) has been receiving a lot of attention from Tulane and Southern Miss.

07/27/99 - It looks like Caledonia HS is not the only Mississippi school that has hired a championship football coach. North Delta School has hired former Starkville HS head football coach Willis Wright as its new football coach. With Coach Wright, who some consider to be one of the greatest coaches in Mississippi history, as their new coach and the addition of some tremendous talent coming up from their junior high school (lost just 2 games in 3 years, according to my source), NDS could very well be a force.

07/27/99 - Watch out for this Mississippi high school senior basketball player. Issac Greenwood, of McAdams HS, is a 6-5, 180-lb swing player who shoots well from the outside and can jump, as he proved last year when he blocked a couple of Alonzo Lane's shots. And most recently when he dunked on Lane in a pickup game. According to my source, he is also a very coachable player who takes pride in his defense. He helped lead McAdams to the 1A championship game.

07/26/99 - According to a source of mine, Parklane Academy junior-to-be pitcher Les Dykes has made the 16 and under USA team at tryouts in Arizona. Les is a hard-throwing 6-3, 180-lb lefthanded pitcher. Look for Les to be one of the top pitchers in Mississippi during the next two years.

07/26/99 - According to a Caledonia source of mine, Caledonia HS has a new head football coach to replace the departed Coach Chambliss, who left to take an assistant coaching position at West Point HS. The new coach is Jack Hankins. Coach Hankins has coached at Millport (AL) HS as well as several other schools in Alabama. I was told he won several state championships.

07/26/99 - It seems Clinton HS long snapper/offensive lineman Matthew Pulliam has become somewhat of a hot item on the college camp circuit this summer. The rumor is he was selected the best snapper at the Ole Miss, FSU and Samford (best OL, as well) camps this summer. My source has also heard that Matthew is now receiving some interest from schools such as Tennessee, Texas, Tulane, SMU and Southern Miss.

07/21/99 - Madison Central HS has several up and coming sophomore football players:

  • Parys Haralson - DE, 6-3, 220, 4.8.
  • Michael Evans - LB, 6-1, 240.
  • Jermaine Spencer - OL, 6-2, 330.
  • Zack Bonner - OL, 5-11, 230.
  • If any of you fans of other Mississippi high schools want your players to receive the attention you feel they deserve, please email their info to me.

07/21/99 - Here are a few stats for the Starkville Senior Legion (21-6) team:

  • SS/P Josh Abraham (JR) .398, 34 R, 21 RBI, 24-24 SB ----- 4-1, 2 SV.
  • C/P Ben Carver (SR) .462 17 R, 1 HR, 16 RBI ----- 5-0, 2.40 ERA, 23 K, 5 CG.
  • CF Travis Garner (SR) .328 25 R, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 20-22 SB.
  • 3B Bubba Hollis (JR) .364, 20 R, 1 HR, 20 RBI.
  • OF Matthew Keith (SR) .400, 29 R, 18 RBI, 23-24 SB.
  • SS/P Tee Thomas (SR) .485, 12 R, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 12-14 SB ----- 2-0, 3.27 ERA, 13 K.
  • Brent Tyler (SR) .390, 12 R, 1 HR, 15 RBI.
  • Trey Wall (SR) .317, 12 R, 1 HR, 20 RBI ----- 5-1, 2.25 ERA, 26 K in 28 INN.
  • Saunders Ramsey (JR) 2-2, 1 SV, 3.00 ERA, 29 K in 23.33 INN.

07/20/99 - Chuck Darbonne is a name you will hear about this coming football season. Starting at quarterback for the first time as a junior last year, he completed 50% of his passes and ran the ball for about a 4.0 per carry average. This Madison Ridgeland Academy (MRA) senior-to-be has attended camps such as the Bowden Passing Academy (1 year), Manning Passing Academy (3 years), MSU camp (this summer), and the Southern Miss Senior camp (this summer). Has been contacted by Southern Miss. Will easily qualify. A good enough athlete to start in basketball and run legs on the 400 and 800 relay track team. Has the size (6-2, 195) and speed (4.66 forty) to play on the next level.

07/20/99 - Got a name for you: Ken Topps. He is a sophomore-to-be who plays for Shannon HS. Anybody know anything about him? I heard there was an article about him in the Tupelo Daily Journal yesterday. In the article his coach said he is a better athlete than former Shannon QB Romaro Miller. It was also mentioned in the article that he started at defensive back as a freshman. That's about all my source had for me in his email. If any of you have the article, I sure would like a copy of it. You can mail it to: Gene's Page.; P.O. Box 639; Caledonia, MS. 39740.

07/16/99 - Brooks Oakley Update: According to a source of mine, Brooks (6-1, 195, 4.7, QB, Senatobia HS), has good knowledge of football, a 3-year starter in baseball, a 2-year starter in football, helped lead his team to the 3A football state finals his sophomore year, helped lead his team to an undefeated regular season his junior year, threw for over 1,500 yards and 19 TDs his junior year, selected Offensive Player of the Year in Division 3-3A this past season, and attended the Ole Miss camp, Bowden and Manning Passing camps this summer. My source also mentioned that North Carolina, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Southern Miss are showing interest.

07/16/99 - Vicksburg HS has a youngster who looked good during the Jackson Summer Passing League. He showed very good speed and hands. His name is J J Brown and the kicker is he will only be a sophomore this coming season. According to my source, this youngster is someone who needs to be watched the next three seasons.

07/16/99 - The rumor is Adam Garner, a sophomore at Heritage Academy this past season, has officially transferred to Columbus HS. According to my source, Adam is a very good basketball player (13 ppg, 6 rpg and 4 apg last season), who is about 6-4, 170-lb., with very good leaping ability and excellent shooting range (good 3-pt. shooter).

07/16/99 - Drew Gilliland Update: Drew, who plays for North Sunflower Academy, was All-Conference as a lineman last season but, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, will play LB/FB this coming season. According to my source, Drew benches 255-lbs, squats 455 and power cleans 235. He has won the shot-put and discus at the conference meet the past two years. His forty time was 4.9 prior to the summer, but my source was told he has brought it down a little since then.

07/16/99 - Trey Fryfogle Update: 6-2, 175, 4.5, 35" vertical leap. Teams showing the most interest: Ole Miss, Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Auburn, Tennessee. Has attended the Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Southern Miss camps. Will attend the LSU camp on the 23rd of August. Was named the most valuable wide receiver at the Florida camp.

07/13/99 - Just received additional info about Senatobia HS quarterback Brooks Oakley. Brooks, who is the son of Senatobia head baseball coach Phil Oakley, is 6-1, and weighs in at 195. He has a good arm and is a good athlete and student. Brooks also pitches and plays shortstop for the Senatobia baseball team.

07/12/99 - Just received the names of a couple of players that I would like to know a little more about if any of you know of them. The first player is Drew Gilliland (Senior, 6-2, 225, FB/LB) of North Sunflower Academy. The other one is Elliott Culp of Durant High School. If any of you know about either of these youngsters, I would really appreciate any info you can provide. I would like to add them to my list of top players but need additional info.

07/10/99 - Received an email a couple of days ago from someone who attended a few of the State Games in Meridian. Here are a few of my source's comments.

Had the opportunity to watch several games while in Meridian for the State Games, June 16, 17, 18, 19. Two definite blue chippers - Blake Jones (Clinton), and Reed Hawkins (Tupelo). Both are catchers and hit with exceptional power. Jones is also a standout QB (6'4" , 215-lbs.) Hawkins has a very good arm with exceptional release. Home to second in 1.9 seconds.

    District One (State Games) standouts:

  • Reed Hawkins (Tupelo) catcher, two 400 ft home runs.
  • Jarred Robinson (Tishomingo County- P / SS) pitched well against New Hope-Starkville-Winona district despite taking a loss. Good mechanics, mid- to upper 80's.
  • Lance Reed (Hamilton - P) pitched in relief against district from Delta. Gave up 1 earned run in a come from behind win. Good mechanics, good competitor, mid 80's.
  • Chris Baughman (Amory - P, INF.) Pitched 5-hit, one-run win against Senatobia- Southaven district. Had key two-run double in Delta district game.
  • Brad Willcutt, the catcher from Heritage Academy, had two 2-run home runs in 5-4 win against District one.

07/10/99 - According to a source of mine, Charleston HS has a couple of football players that have a chance to be Division-1 players in two years. Juniors-to-be Terry Brown (RB, 6-1, 190) and David Ray (DL, 6-3, 245) are both very talented players who should get looks from quite a few D-I schools this coming season.

07/10/99 - Senatobia High School has a senior quarterback by the name of Brooks Oakley who was a starter on last year's team that won it's district last fall. According to my source, he has gone to several camps this summer including the Manning quarterback camp. Anybody have additional info on this young man? I don't really know much about him and would like to know more.

07/09/99 - Jason Burch, who plays for Marshall Academy during the regular school year, was the winning pitcher for Pontotoc's American Legion team in a 12 to 6 victory over Tupelo's American Legion team. Jason gave up 4 hits.

07/07/99 - Clayton Bales, a fullback/linebacker from Picayune High School, has a chance to be a Division-1 prospect, according to a source of mine. Clayton, who has gained 35 pounds since last season, is now 5-11 and 215-lbs and can bench press 350 pounds and squat 455. He is very fast (4.55 forty) for his size and is a very hard runner at fullback and hard hitter at his linebacker spot. Look for Clayton to play nearly every down this season at his fullback spot, where he averaged 9 yards a carry last season in limited action. According to my source, Clayton, who is very athletic, quit baseball this past season to concentrate strictly on football.

07/05/99 - The word is Border Wars will have Amory HS's Deshaun Fields on their Southeast Region Top-100 team later this summer.

07/03/99 - According to a source of mine, Neshoba Central HS has a couple of young female athletes who have a chance to be special players before they graduate.

Tashua Evans, a junior basketball player, could be, according to my source, the second best junior in the state only behind Tupelo HS's Tan White. Tashua is quick, has a good outside shot and is not afraid to play defense.

The other player is a softball player by the name of Kelly Cumberland. Kelly is, according to my source, one of the state's best defensive shortstops due to her great quickness to the ball, good timing and a strong arm. Kelly not only plays excellent defense, but also has very good hitting ability and spreads the ball to all fields. The past two years she has made the All-State Tournament team and has help guide Neshoba Central to two straight 3rd place finishes in the 4A classification.

07/02/99 - Amory HS has a sophomore wide receiver that could be a top recruit in a few years. Josh Crump (5-10, 160-lbs) won best receiver in the freshman/sophomore class (beat out about 250 other players) at the recent Bowden Academy Camp located at Troy State.

07/01/99 - Listed below are the top hitting performers for the Mississippi all-star junior baseball team that participated in the Junior Sunbelt Classic in Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago:

  • Scott Ellison, Houston HS - .500 Batting Average (5 for 10, 1 RBI)
  • Janson Rayburn, Pascagoula HS - .471 Batting Average (8 for 17, 3 HRs, 9 RBIs)
  • Blake Jones, Clinton HS - .417 Batting Average (5 for 12, 1 HR, 4 RBI)
  • Reed Hawkins, Tupelo HS - .375 Batting Average (3 for 8, 1 RBI)
  • Brad Wilcutt, Heritage Academy (Columbus) - .286 Batting Average (4 for 14, 2 RBIs)
