Mississippi All-Sports High School Skuttle-Butt

December 1999 Mississippi High School All-Sports Skuttle-Butt

If you know of a high school player you feel is a Division-I prospect, blue chip or marginal, let me know about him or her. I want to help promote as many deserving high school players as possible. Since I am considered a booster of a major university, I cannot initiate contact with a high school coach or player, so I have to count on all of you to provide me with the information for this page.

Support your hometown high school sports team because these players and coaches put forth a lot of effort and hard work to be the best they can be and by going to their games you show them that you appreciate their efforts. If you want to have an added incentive, go to the game to see if you can find a prospect I can put on this page. I want your input to make this page the best it can be.

12/24/99 - Matthew Pulliam, Long Snapper/Offensive Lineman from Clinton High School, Clinton, MS., is listed as a Blue Chipper in this years' Forrest Davis Football Annual Magazine. The rumor is Matthew is currently considering the following colleges: Southern Miss, Mississippi College, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Hinds CC.

12/24/99 - Has anybody seen Antonio McGee play? I have been told that he is a pretty good basketball player who plays for Okolona (MS) HS. He is a senior who is 6-6 and is scoring in the 25 point per game range, according to my source.

12/22/99 - According to a source of mine, Hattiesburg High School has an outstanding junior offensive lineman named Chad Foote who is a two-year starter on the offensive line and was recently named Hattiesburg High's outstanding offensive lineman. He is about 6-2, 275-lbs and has been receiving letters from Ole Miss and USM.

Does anyone have additional info on this player?

12/21/99 - While at the Columbus HS Christmas Classic Tournament last night, I was told by a couple of guys in the know that Columbus HS has a couple of sophomores who have a chance to be really special during the next few years. They are Anthony Johnson, a 6-1 guard who can shoot the three's from NBA range. He is averaging about 16 to 17 points per game. He can also dunk the basketball. According to my sources, he is the total package. The other sophomore is Marcus Verner. Marcus is 6-7, 225-lbs and has loads of untapped potential. Based on talking to my sources, he is still a babe in the woods as far as basketball is concerned.

12/17/99 - Senior QB Brooks Oakley of Senatobia HS finished his career with over 4,000 yards passing after completing 265 passes in 490 attempts. He also had 40 TD's. Brooks was selected as the Best Offensive Player in Division 3-3A for the second straight year.

12/17/99 - A quarterback for the future is junior Shaun Carmichael of Pascagoula HS. Shaun, who is 6-3, 210-lbs., is an excellent all-around QB who has been a starter since his freshman year.

12/17/99 - Have you heard of this young man? Buddy Pellegrino is a 5-9, 175-lb junior RB/CB from Mercy Cross HS in Biloxi, MS. Buddy, who runs a 4.5 forty, set a new Mercy Cross school record for rushing with 1,482 yards this season. He also intercepted 7 passes (12 for his career). Plus, he had 2,029 all-purpose yards and 21 TD's. He was selected to the 1999 Sun Herald All-Coast Football Team. He is an excellent student who had already made a qualifying ACT score as a sophomore.

12/17/99 - Pelahatchie HS has two outstanding sophomores to watch the next two years. They are QB Kingi McNair (6-2, 185, 4.6) and RB Lonnie Collier (5-10, 185, 4.5). Collier, playing backup to Pelahatchie's outstanding fullback Ken Archie this past season, ran for over 600 yards.

12/17/99 - Michael Evans, presently a sophomore at Olive Branch HS, is a youngster worth watching over the next two seasons. Michael, who is 6-1 and 250-lbs., benches about 300-lbs. and squats in the 450 to 500-lb. range. He runs a 4.9 in the 40 and started at nose guard this past season. The word is he will be starting on the offensive line next season.

12/16/99 - During her last five games, Dandy Dozen member Jessica Dunlap has scored 157 points and hauled down 65 rebounds for an average of 31.4 points per game and 13 rebounds per game. Hatley HS is 13-1 and ranked 6th in the Daily Journal poll. Anybody know who is actively recruiting this outstanding player?

12/16/99 - South Panola HS has a couple of seniors who are being recruited by Mississippi Valley State. They are Robert Lester, a 5-8, 170, defensive back and Jeremiah Brassell, a 5-11, 230, 4.6 linebacker. I have also been told that Jeremiah is an excellent student.

12/10/99 - Houston HS's outstanding senior linebacker/running back Matt Childs was unanimously voted the Most Valuable Player for District 2-3A. According to my sources, Matt has been offered by Princeton University to play outside linebacker. Other schools are also looking at him. Matt, because of his size, is one of the big-time sleepers in the state of Mississippi this year. He kind of reminds me of MSU's Barrin Simpson, a kid who was not highly recruited out of high school but had enough ability and a big enough heart to become a college all-american. Matt is a straight-A student as well.

P.S. The word is he will also make the All-State team.

12/10/99 - According to my sources, Shannon HS has a player who could turn out to be the top quarterback in the state of Mississippi in 2002. According to my source, Ken Topps set a new state record in passing yards. I was also told that Ken may also be a good baseball pitcher.

12/10/99 - West Lauderdale HS players to watch:

Seniors:
Matt Vaughn, Athlete, 4.4 speed, great vertical leap, Great hands!
Rocky Rockette, OL/DL 6'4", 286-lbs.

Sophomores:
Jared Parten, DE/TE, 6-4, lettered as a freshman
Clay Pope, Long Snapper, DE/LB, lettered as a freshman

Freshman:
C.J. Fountain, QB, Started as a freshman, great leader, super thrower.

12/10/99 - Clayton Bales of Picayune Memorial High School had an outstanding year at fullback this season. He played a major factor in Picayune going 10-1 and winning division 7-4a. The senior fullback ran the ball 144 times for 1,031 yards and 13 tds. He had an outstanding average of 7.2 yards per carry. Clayton was second on the team in receiving yards. He is also an excellent blocker. He was a lot of help for his teammate Josh Carter who had 1,300 yards rushing this season. Josh averaged a little over 5 yards per carry and also had 13 tds. Clayton is also a very good sport on and off the field. He is a good kid who works very hard for what he gets.

12/07/99 - Here is a little info from one of you.

I attended the high school state football championships Dec.3 and 4. The following are some players that made impacts in their games:

Booneville's David Carnell - 205 lbs., TE/LB, Sr. (He really is agressive and is always around the ball.)

Bay Spring's Willie Page - 235 lbs., TE, Sr. (He is physically imposing. He lined up most of the time at split end.)

Lawrence County's Lorenzo Townsend - 210 lbs., RB, Sr. (He is not the fastest back, but he loves to run north and south and will get yards after the first hit.)

Madison Central's Doug Buckles - 275 lbs., OG, Sr. (He is a tremendous blocker with great foot-work and leverage. Best of all, he finishes off a block; he doesn't stop until the whistle.)

Madison Central's Chris Spencer - 295 lbs., OT, Jr. (He and Buckles can dominate anyone on the defensive line. He is similar to Buckles in his blocking style.)

Madison Central's Steven Gostkowski - 175 lbs., K, Soph. (Other than Buckles, he was the most impressive player that I saw. He can easily kick the ball out of the end zone. Against a very strong headwind, he kicked the ball to the goal line. He also had no trouble kicking 50 yrd. field goals during warmups.)

Provine's Jeff Sanders - 195 lbs., RB, Jr. (He was the best running back that I saw at the championships. He is very quick and a hard runner who will get yards after the first hit.)

12/03/99 - According to a source of mine, Noxubee County HS has a senior football player by the name of Chris Jones. Prior to this year, Chris played quarterback. This year, however, he was moved to wide receiver where his 4.53 speed (MSU camp time) and 6-3, 195-lb size helped him catch 41 passes for a total of 537 yards and 4 TDS. Chris, who is an excellent student, can bench over 250 pounds and squat over 300. All of the in-state schools are showing some interest. Sounds like a big-time sleeper to me who has the potential to make some college a fine wide receiver.
