Perkinston, MS. - The rest of the nation is apparently taking notice of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College football program.
The Bulldogs are ranked No. 16 in the country in the NJCAA Pre-season Top 25, released earlier this week. Gulf Coast is one of three Mississippi teams in the rankings and five receiving votes.
"It's one of those things you have to be careful of, because it doesn't mean anything at the end," Bulldogs coach Steve Wright said. "But it's a nice honor. I think we've finally reached the status where we're considered a bona fide program around the country."
Defending state champion Northwest, which went 11-1 in 1999, is the top vote-getter. Hinds checks in at No. 12, while Itawamba and East Central also received votes.
Wright is heading into his fifth year as Gulf Coast head coach. After losing campaigns in 1996 and 1997, Wright's teams have gone 6-4 and 7-3 the last two seasons.
The Bulldogs return the core of one of the state's top offensive teams for 2000, with wide recievers Jason Armstead and Doug Gabriel, running backs Deloise Moore and Sidney Dumas and offensive linemen Roderick Funchess and Kareem Marshall back to anchor the Gulf Coast attack.
Gulf Coast will begin practice on Aug. 12, with the first game set for Aug. 31 at home against Holmes. The Bulldogs then play back-to-back road games at Northeast and at Northwest, before facing East Central and Hinds in succession.
Other key games are Oct. 14 at Southwest, the Oct. 21 homecoming game against Pearl River and a Nov. 2 home date with Itawamba. All of Gulf Coast's home games will be played at A.L. May Stadium, as opposed to in the past when the Bulldogs would play up to two games a year on the Coast.
"Our first five games are going to be a load," Wright said. "We play the No.1 team in the nation our third game with only three days to prepare and then play a solid East Central team the next week. If that doesn't help us get ready in the offseason, I don't know what will."
