8/25/00 - What has been a tough summer for the Northwest Mississippi Community College football program just got tougher. For the first time in school history, the Rangers' football team has been hit with a one-year probation by both the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College for violating the starting practice date for fall drills.

Northwest was saddled with NJCAA sanctions which include the loss of the Rangers' pre-season No. 1 national ranking, no post-season bowl games, and the suspension of three practices for the fall of 2001. The MACJC banned the Rangers from participating the 2000 state playoffs, and halted football practice at Northwest on August 21 and 22.

The violations were a direct result of the Rangers beginning football practice on Aug. 7, three days before the NJCAA starting date of August 10. Conflicting rules in the NJCAA and MACJC handbooks caused the confusion. Northwest followed the MACJC handbook which states that 22 practice dates are allowed before the season opener, but those practices resulted in the Rangers starting three days earlier than the date of Aug. 10.

"I regret this situation has occurred with our football team," said Northwest President David Haraway. "In starting fall practice this year, Head Coach Bobby Franklin followed to the letter, the appropriate rule regarding the start of fall football practice as it appears in the MACJC Handbook of Rules and Regulations. Unfortunately in doing so, Coach Franklin started practice prior to the allowable starting date of Aug. 10, as designated by the NJCAA in their book of rules.

"We have learned a difficult, but valuable lesson as a result of this situation. That is that the MACJC rules and the NJCAA rules are, in some situations, in conflict with each other. With regard to the start of fall practices, the NJCAA rule took precedence over the MACJC rule."

Northwest, 11-1 overall last season, finished fourth in the nation in passing offense averaging 292.3 yards per game en route to claiming its first MACJC state championship since 1992.
