Northwest MS CC - Jones County JC football game writeup:

The Northwest Community College Rangers used 607 yards of total offense, 477 through the air, to rout the Jones County Bobcats 72-7 Sept. 9 in Laurel. The victory improved Northwest's record to 2-0 overall, and gave the Rangers their 12th consecutive win dating back to last season. Jones County fell to 0-2.

Northwest quarterback Will Hall of Amory completed 20 of 23 passes for 357 yards and five touchdowns, while backup Frank Pace of Hernando was 9 of 12 for 120 yards and two scores. The Ranger defense also turned in a strong performance by limiting the Bobcats to 178 yards. Northwest defensive backs Demetric Wright of Batesville and Johnathan Shaw of Oxford returned interceptions for touchdowns. Wright returned the second of his two picks 48 yards for a score in the first quarter, while Shaw posted a 68-yard return for a touchdown in the fourth.

"Teamwise, this was one of the best efforts that I have ever been associated with," said Ranger Head Coach Bobby Franklin. "We were able to score early and that allowed our defense to take over."

Northwest led 41-7 at halftime thanks to Wright's touchdown and two scoring tosses by Hall in the first quarter -- a 15-yarder to Anton Paige of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and a 50-yarder to Marcus Christon of Batesville. Placekicker Shae Orrell of Senatobia also booted a 21-yard field goal. Orrell later added field goals of 27 and 34 yards.

Hall hooked up with Paige, the game's leading receiver with six catches for 141 yards, again in the second period on a 67-yard touchdown bomb, then hit Joey Steadman of College Park, Ga. with a 39-yard scoring pass. Jones County's lone score came just before halftime when Bobcat Bobcat quarterback Fabian Walker threw a 14-yard touchdown toss to receiver Ahmad Harris.

In the third quarter, Ranger quarterback Hall wrapped up his evening by throwing a six-yard touchdown pass to Ty Freeman of Oxford. Backup Pace entered the contest and picked up where Hall left off by throwing scoring passes of 10 yards to Phillip Pratt of Vardaman and a 42-yarder to Eugene Egerson of Taylor.

9/01/00 (1:30 p.m.) - Northwest vs Copiah-Lincoln writeup and stats.

Two weeks after receiving probation from the NJCAA for violating the starting date for the beginning of fall practice, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers vented some of the frustrations by handing the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves a 37-3 beating August 31 in Wesson in the season-opener for both teams.

Northwest quarterback Will Hall of Amory passed for 390 yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers to lead the offensive charge. The Ranger defense also checked in with a strong performance limiting Copiah-Lincoln to 150 total yards, five in the second half. Pre-season All-American strong safety Johnathan Shaw of Oxford led the way with two interceptions, a quarterback sack, and a fumble recovery.

"I thought we played a pretty good game tonight," said Northwest Head Coach Bobby Franklin. "We played a lot of different people and some freshmen got their feet wet. We had some mistakes, but now we have some time to watch and we can correct those errors."

The Rangers spotted Copiah-Lincoln the first three points of the contest on a 32-yard field goal by Matt Powers, before answering with 37 consecutive points. Northwest scored three touchdowns during a three-plus minute span in the second quarter.

Hall, who completed 27 of 38 passes and threw three interceptions, tossed an eight-yard touchdown pass to receiver Anton Paige of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., then followed that up with a 10-yarder to receiver Durrell Weekly of Water Valley. Northwest claimed a 20-6 halftime advantage after tailback Sherron Moore of Calhoun City turned a screen pass from Hall into a 55-yard touchdown.

The Rangers tacked 17 additional points in the fourth period when Hall hooked with receiver Ray Jackson of Como on a 20-yard scoring play and receiver Joey Steadman of College Park, Ga. on a 60-yard touchdown toss.

Linebacker John Andrews of East Point, Ga., notched a safety by sacking Copiah-Lincoln quarterback Denard Parks in the end zone and placekicker Brent Smith of Byhalia booted a 25-yard field goal.

Press release from NWCC's Brett Brown

9/01/00 - I attended the East Central CC at East MS CC game last night. East Miss. scored the first two touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead. East Central would come back and tie it up 14-14. Eventually, East Miss. would go ahead 28-21 late in the game but East Central would take advantage of a mistake in the punting game to set up a short touchdown drive to make the score 28-27. Faking an extra point attempt, East Central would take the ball in for a two-point conversion to win the game 29-28. East Central would tack on another score with seconds to go to make the final score 35-28.

Highly recruited EMCC center Milford Brown had around seven pancake blocks in the first half alone. The word is the entire SEC is showing interest in Brown.
