    MDCC Athletes Win Halbrook Award

Mississippi Delta Community College athletes made their mark in the classroom as well as on the playing field during the past year, and they have the trophy to prove it.

MDCC was awarded the Halbrook Award for Academic Achievement Among Athletes by posting a 93% graduation rate for all athletes during the previous school year. This was the highest graduation rate among all 15 junior and community colleges in the state. The award was presented to MDCC President, Dr. Bobby Garvin, during this week's Mississippi Association of Colleges meeting in Louisville. This meeting of college and university leaders began in 1921 and is held each year at a different school's campus.

The Halbrook Award for Academic Achievement Among Athletes was established in 1984 as a result of House Resolution 88 and was made possible through endowments by former State Representative David M. Halbrook of Belzoni and his brothers, John C. and James G. Halbrook of Belzoni and J.A. Halbrook of Beaumont, TX.

The purpose of the Halbrook Award is to recognize college and universities that maintain and achieve high academic standards for student athletes, thus encouraging high graduation rates.

"As far as I'm concerned, the Halbrook Award is one of the most prestigious awards this college can receive. It's further confirmation of the kind of job we're doing in preparing all our students academically," said Dr. Bobby Garvin, President of the Moorhead college.

"Our instructors continue to do a great job of reaching our students and the academic quality they provide continues to be one of the major strong points of Mississippi Delta Community College," he said.

Long time Athletic Director and former coach Jimmy Bellipanni was less restrained in his reaction. "I'm ecstatic!" he said.

"I'm so very happy about winning this award. It (winning the award) does more for our athletic program than anything I can think of. It proves we're not just going out there and recruiting athletes just so they can play sports," Bellipanni said.

10/25/98 - From the Office of Public Relations/Mississippi Delta CC:

    MDCC blanks East Central 25-0

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans ran their record to 6-2 overall Thursday night by blanking East Central Community College 25-0 in Moorhead.

Both teams got off to slow starts, but the Trojans finally found the end zone with just three seconds remaining in the first quarter when freshman running back Danny Smith of Cleveland plowed in from two yards out. The run capped a 61 yard drive that took 11 plays, the longest a 26 yard rumble up the middle by sophomore running back John Jones of Cleveland. Brian Andrus' PAT was no good and the Trojans were up 6-0. This score stood all through the second quarter and the teams ended the first half with little to show for their efforts.

The Trojans finally put more points on the board with 5:45 left in the third quarter when Danny Smith dove in from one yard out to cap a 92 yard drive that took 11 plays. Highlights of the drive were passes of 25 yards and 13 yards from quarterback Rob Chapman to sophomore wide receiver Shantaurus Boatman of Indianola and a 17 yard run by Smith. A two-point PAT attempt failed and Delta led 12-0.

The Trojans put two insurance TD's on the board in the fourth quarter. The first came with 8:41 remaining when freshman linebacker Gary Davis of Greenwood jarred a pass loose from a Warrier receiver and sophomore defensive back Eugene Liger scooped up the fumble and raced 45 yards to pay dirt. Andrus' kick was blocked and the Trojans were up 18-0.

The final score came with just 3:35 left in the game when freshman quarterback Jerrico Provost fumbled into the end zone following a run from six yards out. Sophomore wide receiver Hoise Baymon of Belzoni was there to pounce on the fumble and get credit for the TD. This time Brian Andrus nailed the PAT. The score capped a 54 yard drive that took 10 plays, the longest was a 13 yard run by freshman running back Sherrod Dickson of Pine Bluff, AR.

The win moves the Trojans to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the North Division. East Central falls to 2-6.

    Game Totals:

  • MDCC: Rushed 52 times for 228 yards and hit 5-11 passes for 78 yards for 306 yards of total defense.
  • ECCC: Rushed 39 times for 106 yards and hit 8-21 passes for 99 yards (1 INT) for 205 yards of total offense.

10/25/98 - Northwest MS CC (NWCC) has a player listed as a freshman who, in essence, is really a sophomore. The player is Colston Weatherington. Colston is being looked at by several schools as well as several Canadian Football League teams.

Did you know that of the 14 Mississippi Juco teams, NWCC was ranked 12th in total defense last season? This year they are ranked 4th. A huge amount of the credit goes to former Ole Miss defensive back Jeff Carter, who is the new Defensive Coordinator for NWCC.

10/20/98 - Impressions from one of you about the Northwest vs Miss Delta juco game, which was won by Northwest 45 to 28:

  • MDCC has a really good defensive line. Dorsett Davis is good, but Toby Golliday is the best defensive lineman that MDCC has.
  • Best offensive player on the field was NWCC's Andre Heard who had 198 yards receiving.
  • Keep your eye out for NWCC DE Colston Weatherington (41 total tackles through 7 games). He's a 6-5, 260 freshman who could be the pass rushing DE from heck one day.
  • John Jones, MDCC's 6-0, 240-lb fullback, was an absolute load. He was nearly unstoppable.

  • 10/06/98 - Notes from the Hinds 37-0 win over Co-Lin from one of you:

    Hinds Notes:

  • WR Michael Slater, a 6-2, 175-lb. sophomore from Vicksburg, had a good game including a 56-yard touchdown reception. He showed great balance and speed as a defender hit him hard just as the ball arrived but Michael shook him off and ran in for a TD.
  • DT Franco Beasley (6-5, 265, Madison, Georgia) broke into the starting lineup and was very impressive, showing great strength and quickness.

    Co-Lin Notes:

  • DT Cleveland Pickney (a 6-1, 280-lb, sophomore from South Carolina) was the most impressive Co-Lin player, repeatedly beating his blocker.
  • LB Glen Jones (6-1, 215) showed great hitting ability.
  • FS Bershard Tillman (5-9, 165, sophomore) showed blazing speed.
