11/19/98 - A Press Release from the Public Relations Department of Northwest Mississippi Community College:

Rangers accept bid to play in Mineral Water Bowl
By Brett Brown

For the first time in six seasons, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers are going bowling. Northwest has accepted a bid to play the Middle Georgia College Warriors in the Mineral Water Bowl Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The Rangers, 9-2, moved up in the latest NJCAA poll from sixth to fifth despite losing to Jones County 24-14 Nov. 14 in the MACJC state championship game. Middle Georgia, which was beaten 13-6 for the Georgia state crown by Georgia Military, owns a record of 8-3.

It will mark the first time in school history that the Rangers have faced an opponent from the state of Georgia. Overall, Northwest has been to seven bowl games with six of those occurring in the last 18 seasons under current Head Coach Bobby Franklin. In their last bowl appearance in 1992, Northwest blanked Northeastern Oklahoma 34-0 for the national championship.

11/14/98 - A couple of basketball players to watch are Miss Delta CC freshmen Charles Sanders and PG Freddie Williams. In a recent game, Freddie scored 30+ points, played great D and played hard the entire game.

11/11/98 - The MACJC State Championship game between Northwest (9-1) and Jones (10-0) will be played this Saturday at Ellisville. Kickoff time is 1:30 p.m.

I will have the final MACJC stats this weekend.

11/06/98 - MDCC Sports Release. Office of Public Relations/Mississippi Delta CC:

MDCC Trojans capture first-ever State Soccer Championship

The Mississippi Delta Community College soccer team captured the first-ever State Soccer Championship Sunday at Perkinston by defeating Gulf Coast Community College 5-2 in overtime.

Gulf Coast scored the first goal 10 minutes into the championship game, but the Trojans responded with a goal of their own and then dominated play for most of the game, taking 25 shots while allowing the Bulldogs' only 11.

The state title seemed secure when Delta scored a second goal with only three minutes remaining in the game. But, the Bulldogs weren't licked yet and sent the game into OT with a goal of their own near the two minute mark.

The 30-minute overtime period belonged to MDCC as the Trojans scored three goals while a suffocating defense shut out the Bulldogs' offense.

"We really dominated play during the whole game, we just couldn't get anything to drop during regulation play. Gulf Coast had a good defensive team but we had plenty of chances to score and just couldn't get a goal," MDCC Head Coach Al Finley said.

"Then, we just dominated them in overtime. We really wanted the championship and we went out and won it," he said.

Striker Jeffrey Giachelli scored two goals while midfielders Brian and Brad Strazi added one goal each and striker Scott Heranney added another. Assists were credited to Chris McCurdy, Scott Heranney, Jonathan Branch and Brian Strazi and keeper Ricky Sager was credited with three saves.

Outstanding defensive players for the state championship tournament were fullbacks David Wallace, Jerry Santucci, Curt Luke, and Josh Montgomery.

The Trojans advanced to the title game by defeating Holmes/Ridgeland 3-0 in Saturday's semifinal matchup. Jeffrey Giachelli scored two goals in that game and Scott Heranney added the third score. Trey Shamoun, Brian Strazi and Chris McCurdy were credited with assists and keeper Ricky Sager was credited with four saves.

The Trojans finished the season with a near-perfect 15-1 record and the sophomores leave MDCC with an outstanding 24-4 mark for their two years as Trojans.

"Our players have always been winners, but they really learned how to win Sunday. They learned that you just have to keep working and not give up," Coach Finley said.

The first-ever State Championship Trophy in soccer will be presented by Finley and the team to MDCC President Dr. Bobby Garvin at halftime of Thursday night's football game between MDCC and Northeast.

11/02/98 - A Juco players to watch is:

  • Javon Walker- 6-1, WR, Jones County JC, Freshman. Excellent player (big, strong and fast) who has been overshadowed by sophomore WR Anthony Branch. My source feels Walker will wind up being a better wide out than Branch, who appears headed to Florida State.
