06/30/99 - Meridian CC signee Brian Reed (via Amory HS) pitched the West Point Senior Legion team to a 2-0 victory over the Starkville Senior Legion team. Brian went the distance (7 innings, faced 23 batters), throwing a 1-hitter with 14 strikeouts.

06/26/99 - Here is info from Northwest Community College Sports Information official Brett Brown:

  • Ranger freshman first baseman Nathan Bowden was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 35th round of the amateur draft, but has decided to return to Northwest for his sophomore campaign.

  • The Ranger football team, which is coming off a 9-3 season in which it claimed the MACJC North Division championship and earned a bowl berth, has hired Craig Jersild as its new defensive coordinator. Jersild comes to Northwest after helping Butler County Community College in Kansas win the National Championship last season. The Butler defense was ranked in the top five in the country last season in every category. Jersild replaces former Ole Miss defensive back Jeff Carter who was with the Ranger program for one year. Carter left Northwest to become the secondary coach at Arkansas State University.

  • Sophomore Ranger outfielder Eduardo Pena was named NJCAA Division II National Player of the Year at the first of this month. Pena is Northwest's all-time leader in home runs, RBI, and slugging percentage. His plans for this school year are unknown.

06/21/99 - Look for two Amory HS baseball players, hard-throwing right-handed pitcher Brian Reed and outfielder Rory Thornton, to sign with Meridian CC. Brian was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 25th round but does not plan on signing with them.
