07/22/99 - Former ICC baseball player Richard Hass is playing for the Mossy Oak Semi-Pro team this summer and, according to my sources, has played very, very well. Richard, who runs a 4.7 forty, appears to have an excellent eye at the plate and is a very good opposite field hitter. He is an excellent third baseman / long relief pitcher candidate for a 4-year college.
Richard's teammate Eric Reynolds is another candidate for a 4-year college looking for a good baseball player. Eric is a 6-3, 215-lb left-handed pitcher who can throw in the mid-80 range. He is a little raw around the edges as far as pitching is concerned, but looks to have really good pitching potential for a college willing to give him a chance. He has also showed himself to be a power hitter who hits the ball hard.
07/21/99 - Thanks to Brett Brown (Public Relations Assistant for Sports Information) of Northwest Mississippi CC for this press release:
Rewarded for their success in the classroom during the 1998-99 school year, 11 Northwest Mississippi Community College athletes, the largest group ever in a sports year at the school, have earned Academic All-American honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association. Also, the 1999 Northwest Ranger baseball team finished tied for third for NJCAA spring Academic Team of the Year with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.15.
Last spring, the Ranger baseball squad finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the nation by the NJCAA among division II schools with the second best record in the country at 43-10. Northwest won the MACJC north division championship and was runner-up for the Region 23 Division II crown.
Three players from the baseball team received Distinguished Academic All-American merits from the NJCAA for posting a GPA of 3.80 or better for 45 semester hours -- Sledge Floyd of Como, 4.0 GPA in pre-medicine; Chad Thompson of Hickory Flat, 3.98 in general college; and Marcus Van Every of Senatobia, 3.93 in general college.
One Northwest men's basketball player was also named Distinguished Academic All-American -- Garrett Terry of Ashland for posting a GPA of 3.82 in drafting and design technology.
Seven athletes were named Academic All-American by Sport for recording a grade-point-average of 3.60 or better for 45 semester hours. Baseball players include Barry Finnie of Batesville, 3.64 in secondary education; Brad Gray of Hickory Flat, 3.61 in accounting; and Daniel Husband of Tunica, 3.70 in general college.
Two members of the tennis squad also received this honor -- John Abrams of Olive Branch, 3.69 in accounting and Misty Burford of Independence, 3.73 in elementary education.
One men's basketball player, Quentin Gillespie of Ashland, 3.77 in drafting and design technology; and one golfer Rafael Perez of Valencia, Spain, 3.64 in general college round out the list.
07/16/99 - According to a source of mine who attended the Colonnade All-Star Basketball Camp this past week, a couple of Mississippi Community College players who stood out were Neal Broom of Pearl River CC and Freddie Williams of Mississippi Delta CC. For those of you who didn't know this, current Birmingham Southern College Athletic Director Joe Dean, Jr. runs the camp. It has become a great exposure camp for some of the top players (high school and juco) in the Southeast.
07/14/99 - The 1999 Pre-Season NJCAA Football Poll has the following Mississippi teams listed in the top 25.
07/07/99 - From the Northwest Mississippi CC Sports Information Department:
