12/25/00 - Read below about a Christmas gift from Gene's Page and Gene's Page readers to the youngsters in Mississippi who play high school baseball and basketball.

In the next week or two I am going to post lists of Mississippi high school baseball and basketball players, current freshmen to seniors, that are potential D-I players. If you know of a player that you feel deserves to be on one of these lists, please email their info to me. My email address is swindoll@genespage.com.

As a reference, I need the following info: player's name, classification, high school, height, weight, sport (baseball or basketball), playing position and anything else you know about a player right down to the smallest tidbit of info. These lists will be similar to the football lists that I already have online.

Like football, I want to use Gene's Page to help Mississippi kids who play baseball and basketball receive as much attention as possible. Who knows, your info may be that one bit of info that helps a youngster in your area receive the attention of a college coach who decides to offer that youngster a scholarship. Any help that you can give me will be very, very appreciated by me and by the youngster you write about.

Here is an example of what kind of info that I am looking for:
Wayne County HS junior catcher Brett Wilson has been receiving baseball letters from various D-II and junior colleges. Brett has been invited to participate in the Area Code games this summer in California. According to my source, he has consistently been clocked at 1.9 sconds throwing to second base. During his sophomore year, he threw out 15 runners while being named honarable mention in district 5-5A.

12/22/00 - Will this youngster be a spring signee for MSU? Only time will tell.

Ryan Terry is a 6-1, 215-lb RHP senior pitcher from South Pontotoc HS. He was 7-2 last year with a 0.92 ERA in 60.2 innings of work. He recorded 90 strikeouts while allowing a paltry 18 walks. Opponents hit .127 against him in 221 at bats. Of the 28 hits he allowed, 17 were singles while only 2 were home runs. Ryan topped out at 93 mph and was consistently in the 89-90 range. He has a nasty curve-ball, a live fastball and the makings of a straight change. Unlike a lot of youngsters his age, he has very good stamina as evidenced by the fact that he was being clocked at the 87-90 range in the sixth and seventh innings of a lot of his games. His work ethic and attitude are both excellent as is his performance in the classroom. According to my source, Ryan comes from an excellent and very supportive family. He is the kind of student-athlete that any university would be very honored to have.

12/14/00
Registration is underway for the Fourth Annual Mississippi State Baseball Winter Camps, to be held the weekends of Jan. 13-14 and Jan. 20-21 on the Mississippi State University campus.

12/07/00 - Mississippi State University will the open its 111 th baseball season and a 34-game home schedule hosting Notre Dame and the University of New Orleans in the first annual National Bank of Commerce Classic Feb. 16-18 at Dudy Noble Field. The three-day event is sponsored by the National Bank of Commerce, based in the Golden Triangle, and is a part of a 56-game baseball schedule for the 2001 season announced this week by MSU Baseball Coach Pat McMahon.

The Bulldogs take on the UNO Privateers Feb. 16 and, in a rematch of the NCAA Starkville Regional, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Feb. 17 and 18 on opening weekend. Last season the Bulldogs split regular season home game with UNO and won two of three matchups with Notre Dame to advance to the NCAA's Super Regionals in May.

"This is an exciting way to open the 2001 season," exclaimed McMahon. "We appreciate the support of National Bank of Commerce in helping make this event a reality. With Notre Dame and New Orleans in the tournament, our great fans will be treated to a weekend of regional tournament-caliber baseball."

The Bulldogs' schedule features three-game SEC home weekend series against defending national champion Louisiana State, 2000 regular season Southeastern Conference champion South Carolina, NCAA regional tournament participants Alabama and Auburn and Eastern Division rival Kentucky. MSU travels to Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida and in-state SEC foe Mississippi.

MSU, 10 wins away from becoming the first SEC team to reach 2,000 wins, plays 14 of its first 17 games at 7,000-seat Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium.

Twenty-nine of MSU's 56 games are against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament and 18 against teams that finished with top 30 national rankings. Eleven of MSU's 2001 opponents competed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament and two of those advanced to Omaha and the College World Series. "This schedule will be a tremendous test for our young ball club," said McMahon.

The Bulldogs' 56-game slate includes first-time meetings with Austin Peay State University and Troy State and an early-season three-game road series against NCAA College World Series participant Southern California. Mississippi State makes an appearance at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson March 28, taking on Mississippi in the 22nd renewal of the Mayor's Trophy Game.

Mississippi State has also adopted a new starting time for most of its Saturday home SEC games, moving first pitch up 90 minutes to 4 p.m. The starting times for Friday and Sunday games remain unchanged (6:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.).
