08/28/02 - Quite a few of the MSU baseball players were holding an informal practice yesterday at Dudy Noble Field. I watched them hit for about 30 minutes. Here are a few things that I noticed.
Junior third baseman Steve Gendron, who has gained 15 pounds and is now up to 215 after arriving on campus as a 180-pound freshman, showed some pop in his bat. As he gets stronger, I have a sneaky feeling he will be a power hitter.
Sophomore OF/DH Jon Mungle showed some pop. Jon, who looks like a linebacker in build, hit the the LuVel sign on the rightfield scoreboard a few days ago according to one of the other players.
One thing I noticed about this team is their size. Even some of the freshmen look like linebackers. Trust me on this one folks, Ron Polk didn't bring them in to bunt and run. Small ball is fine in some cases, but this is definitely not going to be a small ball team during the next four years.
