STARKVILLE, Miss. --- He wore No. 28 during his days as an All-American pitcher at Mississippi State. But Thursday night at Baltimore's Camden Yards, left-handed pitcher Eric DuBose became No. 32 - the 32nd Mississippi State baseball player to play Major League baseball.

DuBose, 26, originally from Gilbertown, Ala., joined MSU's illustrious collection of Bulldogs in the Majors with a ninth-inning relief appearance against the Toronto Blue Jays. He struck out one and allowed one hit in an inning of shutout relief work in the Orioles' 9-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. After pitching most of the 2002 season with Baltimore's Class AA Bowie (Md.) team, DuBose received his first Major League call-up earlier in the week and made his Major League debut Thursday night in the final game of a four-game series against Toronto.

A first round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics in 1997, DuBose becomes the fifth former Diamond Dog active in the majors. He joins first baseman Rafael Palmeiro and pitcher Jay Powell with the Texas Rangers, pitcher Matt Ginter with the Chicago White Sox and outfielder Adam Piatt with the American League Western Division-leading Oakland Athletics.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Former Mississippi State All-American pitcher Eric DuBose has become the latest Diamond Dog to advance to the Major Leagues. The southpaw from Gilbertown, Ala., who has spent most of the 2002 season pitching for the Baltimore Orioles' Class AA team in Bowie, Md., has been promoted to the Orioles' Major League roster beginning with the Baltimore-Toronto series this week at Camden Yard.

DuBose compiled a 5-3 record with three saves and a 2.51 earned run average in 41 pitching appearances with Bowie.

He set the MSU single season record for strikeouts with 174 in 1996. And after finishing his collegiate career in 1997 with a school-record 428 strikeouts, DuBose was drafted in the first round draft by the Oakland Athletics. He signed with Baltimore prior to the start of the 2002 season.

DuBose joins former Bulldogs Matt Ginter (Chicago White Sox), Rafael Palmeiro (Texas Rangers), Adam Piatt (Oakland Athletics) and Jay Powell (Texas Rangers) in the Major Leagues.

Picayune HS - Picayune HS has a couple of highly touted - and highly recruited - senior baseball players on their team, shortstop Richard Imhoff and LHP Justin Pigott.

Richard, also a very good football players (flanker/free safety), is receving baseball recruiting attention from MSU, Alabama, Ole Miss and Southern Miss and some football recruiting attention from MSU. Richard has unofficially visited Ole Miss - recruiting him hard - a couple of times and has also unofficially visited MSU during one of their junior days.

Justin, who may sign during the fall signing period, has officially visited Southern Miss (offer received) and will visit Alabama soon. Southern Miss is recruiting Justin very hard. An excellent student, Justin currently has a sister on the MSU Pom squad.

09/16/02 - If you have a youngster who would like personal baseball instruction given by a former Mississippi State baseball player, contact Chris Young at 662-615-5799 or by email at cy2145@yahoo.com. Chris, who has recently finished his current pro baseball season, is currently in school at Mississippi State working on his degree.

09/12/02 - Here are some highlights from yesterday's 18-inning scrimmage. As was the case Tuesday, all batters started their at-bats with a 2-1 count.

  • Junior first baseman Matthew Brinson was 1-for-3 with 3 walks and an RBI. By the way, Brinson hit a home run after I left the scrimmage the day before.
  • Junior college transfer Tyler Scarbrough was 2-for-6 with 1 2B, and 3 RBI. He knocked in his three runs with a bases clearing double.
  • Freshman outfielder/infielder Ben Grisham was 3-for-7 with 1 2B and 1 run scored.
  • Freshman outfielder Joseph Hunter was 5-for-7 with 1 2B and 2 RBI. He had two of his hits against the fireballing, left-handed pitcher Todd Nicholas. More on Nicholas later.
  • Redshirt freshman Brett Cleveland was 1-for-3 with 1 walk, 1 2B and 2 RBIs. He also pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, 8 walks while striking out 3. Brett consistently hit in the high 80's with his fastball.
  • Redshirt freshman outfielder Ryan Fesmire was 2-for-5 with 1 run scored.
  • Junior LHP Joey Collums threw 6 innings, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit, 3 walks while striking out 9.
  • During 6 innings of work, redshirt sophomore Todd Nicholas allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 5 walks while striking out 11. Todd, who was consistently in the low to mid-90's throughout his outing, topped out at 96 mph. So far, he has been the most improved player of all that I have seen.

09/10/02 - If you are interested in seeing the Diamond Dogs scrimmage, they are tentatively scheduled to scrimmage this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3 p.m. each day.

09/05/02 - Former Diamond Dog outfielder Phillip Willingham, who was recently named the Frontier League's most valuable player, had a career series against Dubois County, hitting three home runs and knocking in seven RBIs. According to a source of mine, Phillip will sign a contract with the Seattle Mariners.
