01/29/03 - MSU, ranked 11th in the pre-season issue of Collegiate Baseball, will have, according to what Coach Polk said in that issue of CB, possibly the strongest pitching staff, quality and depth, in all of his years of coaching baseball.

CB also listed their total home attendance for last season. LSU was first with 7,546 per game while MSU was second with 6,501.

Although I haven't gotten their high school baseball issue yet, I was told that two of MSU's Mississippi high school signees made the Collegiate Baseball Magazine's Louisville Slugger High School All American team. They are Jeffrey Rea, INF, from Nettleton and Josh Johnson, RHP, from Caledonia. I'm not sure about any of the out of state signees.

01/17/03 - Former MSU great Will Clark will be the featured speaker at the February 20th First Pitch-Meet the Team Banquet to be held in the MSU Student Union. Information on the banquet's tickets, to be sold through the MSU Athletic Ticket Office, will be announced later.

Senior shortstop Matthew Maniscalco and junior pitcher Paul Maholm have been chosen as the team captains for the upcoming season.

  • Josh Johnson - RHP, 6-0, 170, Caledonia HS (Caledonia, MS).
  • Bunky Kateon - SS, 6-0, 190, R-R, St. Paul's Episcopal HS (Mobile, AL).
  • Justin Pigott - LHP, 6-0, 175, Picayune Memorial HS (Picayune, MS).
