STARKVILLE, Miss. --- There will most assuredly be a doctor in the house Feb. 19 when Mississippi State hosts the seventh annual "First Pitch-Meet the Team" baseball banquet. The featured speaker for this year's event is former Bulldog outfielder Dan Van Cleve, now a cardiovascular surgeon at the Rush Heart Institute in Meridian, Miss. A seventh straight capacity crowd is anticipated for the 6 p.m. event in the Colvard Union Ballroom on the MSU campus.

Tickets for the season-opening banquet cost $25 per person and go on sale Friday, January 30 at the MSU Athletic Ticket Office (662-325-2600) in the Bryan Athletic Administration Building.

A native of Jackson, Miss., Van Cleve starred in the MSU outfield from 1982 to 1985. He capped his collegiate career by helping guide the celebrated '85 Bulldogs to an SEC championship and a school-best third-place finish at the prestigious NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Van Cleve was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1985 and spent two seasons in the Rangers' organization prior to beginning his medical studies. A 1993 graduate of the University Medical Center in Jackson, Van Cleve completed general surgery residency in 1998 at the Baylor College of Medicine In Houston, Texas. In 2002 he complete a fellowship and residency program in cardiovascular surgery at the prestigious Texas Heart Institute in Houston, and in December 2002 returned to Mississippi in his current position at the Rush Heart Institute in Meridian.

The "First Pitch/Meet the Team" baseball banquet has featured an impressive array of guest speakers in its first six years, including former Bulldogs Jeff Brantley, Will Clark, Boo Ferriss, Alex Grammas and Burke Masters along with best-selling author and MSU alumnus John Grisham.

Mississippi State begins preseason practice Feb. 9 at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs meet Western Kentucky and Illinois in the three-day MSU Challenge at Dudy Noble Field, launching Ron Polk's 25th season as head baseball coach at Mississippi State.

It's the second preseason ranking for the Baseball Bulldogs, who are ranked 30th in Collegiate Baseball magazine's preseason Fabulous Forty poll.

Defending national champion Rice is the preseason favorite in the NCBWA poll, which features representation by eight different conferences and top independents among the 287 baseball-playing schools in the NCAA Division I ranks. LSU is No. 2 in the poll, which also includes four other SEC teams - No. 9 South Carolina, No. 19 Mississippi, No. 24 Florida and No. 33 Mississippi State.

MSU returns 17 lettermen and all but two starting position players from last year's 42-20-1 edition that advanced to the finals of the NCAA Starkville Regional against North Carolina.
