STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State junior pitcher Saunders Ramsey has been named to the 2004 SEC Baseball Good Works Team. The award spotlights student-athletes who give back to their community through superior service efforts.

Active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes program, Ramsey has served as a featured speaker at that organization's functions in the Golden Triangle area. The Starkville, Miss., native has also worked with local Habitat for Humanity projects, has spoken to numerous youth groups in area schools and churches, and has participated in other community service projects undertaken by Mississippi State University's student-athlete organization, the M-Club.

Ramsey has starred for the Bulldogs out of the bullpen in 2004, compiling a 7-1 record with four saves and 48 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. He leads the MSU staff in wins, pitching appearances and saves, and has notched wins in his last three appearances, two against Southeastern Conference co-champion Arkansas.

The MSU right-hander has also excelled in the classroom. A civil engineering major, Ramsey qualified for the initial balloting for the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America team, is MSU baseball's recipient of the 2003-04 Newsom Award for academic excellence, and has qualified for his second SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Chalk up another honor for Mississippi State sophomore outfielder Brad Corley. The Louisville, Ky., native has been selected as the SEC Player of the Week following a stellar week of play in his final games of the season at Dudy Noble Field.

Corley went 9-for-17 (.529) in four games last week, including an 8-for-12 (.667) plate performance against No. 11 Arkansas that sparked Mississippi State to its first home SEC series win of the campaign. In State's series-clinching 3-2 win Sunday Corley threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate for Arkansas in the sixth inning and an inning later delivered the game-winning walk-off home run, his SEC-leading 18th home run of the year.

In that Sunday twinbill Corley went 7-for-8 and scored three runs.

He compiled a 1.000 slugging percentage for the week, raising his team-leading batting average to .374, the fourth-highest in the Southeastern Conference. Corley, a finalist for the inaugural Boo Ferriss Award as Mississippi's top collegiate baseball player, leads the SEC in total bases with 151 and ranks fourth in the league with a .680 slugging percentage.

It's the second SEC Player of the Week honor this season for Corley, who earned the same honor as well as national player of the week honors April 12 after a six-home run, 11-RBI showing during a five-game road swing.

Mississippi State (31-22, 10-17 SEC) travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend for a regular season-ending three-game series against Alabama (29-23, 10-17 SEC). First pitch for Friday's series opener at Sewell-Thomas Stadium is 6:30 p.m.
