09/30/98 Go here to view pictures of the Dudy Noble Stadium expansion. As I mentioned earlier, I will have weekly updates each Monday or Tuesday.
09/29/98 - Sorry, no expansion pictures today. Wal-Mart gave me the wrong pictures and gave mine to someone else. Hopefully, I will get my pictures today and update tomorrow.
09/27/98 - MSU baseball practice notes:
Newcomer Daron Wright (INF, 6-3, 160, junior) show the ability to lay down a very good bunt.
Newcomer Jamie Rock (3B/SS, 5-10, 194, junior) had at least a couple of hits, a double and single.
Redshirt freshman Burney Hutchinson (OF, 6-0, 163) had a couple of hits, both singles.
Newcomer Shane Kelly (OF, 6-1, 171, junior) had a hit and stolen base (showed very good speed running the bases).
Southern Miss transfer Cliff Wren (senior, 6-0, 228) had two solid hits.
Reshirt freshman Lee Parks (5-8, 183) had a single against Brian Compton.
Senior Brian Wiese hit a home run off of Brian Compton.
Florida transfer Ty Martin (junior, 6-1, 165) looked good defensively at shortstop and had at least one hit.
Redshirt freshman C/3B Jason Burkley (6-2, 216) had a double (89 mph fastball) against Justin Estel.
Senior pitcher Brian Compton was throwing the ball in the 86-90 range with a mid-seventies changeup. With the 2-mph fastball increase and his very effective slider, Brian could be even tougher on SEC hitters this coming season.
Infielder Jason Wilcutt (5-8, 163) pitched some yesterday, throwing in the 85-86 range. I was told he has thrown upwards of 88 mph.
Redshirt freshman Tanner Brock (RHP, 6-3, 180) looked tremendous yesterday, striking out five of the nine batters he faced. Only one batter hit it out of the infield. His fastball was consistently in the high 80's and low 90's (15 of his 34 fastballs were in the 90 to 90+ range).
Sophomore pitcher Justin Estel (6-1, 195) threw in the 86-90 range. What was impressive about his performance was he threw the ball harder after he had been pitching a while. Of his last 11 fastballs, 5 were clocked at 90 mph. Of his first 11, one was clocked at 90. He also threw a high 70's changeup.
09/26/98 - The baseball team practices/scrimmages around 11:30 this morning. I'll try and make the practice and listen to the football game on the radio. It's the closet I can come to being in two places at one time.
09/17/98 - Former Bulldog pitcher/outfielder Bobby Thigpen cracked a vertebrae in his neck on a very recent hunting trip. According to the doctors, he will have a full recovery. If any of you know more about Bobby's accident, please email it to me and I will post an update on my page.
09/14/98 - The word I received from Picayune is MSU redshirt freshman Ryan Carroll was throwing his fastball in the 89-91 mph range, at times, while playing in the Jayhawk league this past summer.
09/10/98 - I forgot to mention to you guys that after the Moss Point / South Panola game I had a late snack at SP play-by-play man Bob Norris's home. Guess who else was there? None other than Dudy Noble's (yes, that one) niece Mitzi Still. Really super lady.
09/10/98 - The word is Meridian CC (via New Hope HS, MS) standout pitcher Jeff Hunter visited Alabama last week and was impressed as were they with him. He has already been offered Southern Miss and, I believe, Ole Miss. Miss State and, I believe, LSU are also very interested in Jeff. Jeff has pinpoint control with velocity in the mid-80's range.
09/06/98 - Miss State, according to Collegiate Baseball, was 6th, nationally, in attendance last season with a total count of 116,963. LSU (232,597), Texas (147,970), Texas A&M (133,819), Texas Tech (126,434) and Alabama (124,577) were ahead of them. LSU and Texas A&M's count included a regional. Miss State was third in average attendance per home game with 3,899. LSU was first with 6,645 and Texas second with 4,773 per home date.
