Hitting stars were:
I know this is getting out but Chris Lotterhos, once again, turned in another outstanding defensive play. This time he turned a sure base hit into a bases loaded inning-ending double play. Are there any better in the SEC than Chris? I sure haven't seen one.
The Diamond Dogs and Golden Eagles conclude their two-game series tonight beginning at 6:30.
04/28/99 - MSU signee Matthew Maniscalco has set an Alabama high school hitting streak record by hitting in 34 straight games and still counting. Matthew plays for Oxford HS in Oxford, Alabama. For those Bulldog fans in the Oxford area, please keep me informed.

04/25/99 - I guess you could call this a letter to the editor email. If I start receiving more of these, I do believe I will start a Letters to the Editor Skuttle-Butt section.
I would like to recognize the kind and wonderful actions of two members of the Bulldog family. I had the opportunity to attend the Saturday Kentucky baseball game in Lexington, Kentucky, with my nine-year old son Patrick. It was a chance for he and I to spend some time together and watch our beloved Dawgs.
We arrived at the ballpark around 12 PM to watch the batting practice. Our Dawgs had not yet arrived at the field. I went to the press box to see if I could find Jim Ellis to ask him to say hi to the folks back home. He was not there yet but as I was coming down from the press box I ran into Joe Dier. I had never met him before but I knew he was a Bulldog by his maroon coat. I asked him when Jim would be arriving and he told me soon. I mentioned I was going to ask Jim to say hi and Joe offered to give the message to Jim. After that we talked awhile and I told him I had brought Patrick to the game and hoped he would be able to get some autographs. Joe asked if I had a program and I told him no that the concession stand had not opened yet. He told me to wait there while he got a MSU media guide for my son. I was very proud to tell my son about this.
After the team arrived, I told Patrick to go over to the dugout and ask Coach McMahon if he could get the players autographs. Coach Mac signed the first one. He then spent several minutes talking with Patrick before sending him to get the rest of the autographs. When Patrick had all the players and coaches autographs, he returned to his seat. Just before the game started Coach Mac came up in the stands and thanked Patrick (by name) for supporting the Dawgs. After the game was won by the Dawgs, we saw coach Mac again and I got a picture of the two together. Coach also told Patrick he brought good luck to the Dawgs.
The actions by these two gentlemen make me very proud to bleed maroon. These men are class acts and I am very proud to be a Bulldog. We are very lucky to have Joe Dier and Coach Mac at MSU.

04/24/99 - MSU lost to LSU 10 to 8 in what was Matt Ginter's worse outing of the year. Matt, in front of between 30 to 40 MLB scouts and 7,318 fans (95% MSU), threw 7 innings, allowing 9 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks. He also struck out 9. Ainsworth, the pitcher for LSU, who also is a hard thrower and a pitcher the scouts are very high on, didn't fare much better, allowing 9 hits, 4 walks and 6 runs in 7.1 innings. He also struck out 9 batters.
The hitting stars for MSU were:
I would be remiss in failing to mention the fabulous defense played by MSU second baseman Chris Lotterhos. Chris made two outstanding plays going deep into the hole to field ground balls and then throw out the runners. Chris has been playing this kind of defense all year and without a doubt deserves serious consideration for All-SEC recognition. Although there are a few second basemen in the SEC that hit with more power, it would be difficult to find another one who is a better all-around second baseman than Chris.
MSU and LSU continue their series today at 2:15. The game will be televised by Fox/SportsSouth.
04/24/99 - The MSU softball team plays at Alabama today at 2 p.m. If you live in the Tuscaloosa area and you will not be attending the baseball game, head on out to the Alabama softball field and support our softball team.
04/24/99 - Here is some info I heard at the game last night. Vicksburg (MS) HS sophomore soccer player Courtney Chapman is supposed to be one of the top 2 to 3 sophomore soccer players in the state of Mississippi. It sure would be nice if some of you Vicksburg sources would keep me updated on Courtney.
04/23/99 - Did you know since 1971 only two other MSU teams have had better records after 9 losses than this team (presently 32-9)? They were the 1979 team (48-12 overall and 36-9 after 9 losses) and the 1989 team (54-14 overall, 45-9 after 9 losses). As a comparison, last years team was 17-9 after 9 losses (43-23 overall).
04/22/99 - MSU, with their 8-6 loss to UAB yesterday, is now 32-9 on the season. They had won 18 straight games (going back to February 19th) against non-SEC competition prior to yesterday's game.
Sophomore Mark Freed took the loss after allowing 7 straight hits and 4 runs in the first inning prior to being taken out. True freshman Adam Larson came in and pitched 4.2 innings while allowing 4 runs. Senior Scott Polk and sophomore Justin Estel also pitched shutting out UAB the rest of the game. Josh West hit a home run for the Diamond Dogs.
MSU now heads back to State to prepare for their series with LSU, which begins Friday night at 6:30.
04/21/99 - MSU, now 32-8 on the season, defeated UAB 15-1. MSU hitters hit 6 home runs, three in one inning (Cliff Wren 8th and 9th, Chris Curry 3rd and 4th, Jon Knott 11th, Ty Martin 3rd).
MSU and UAB conclude their series this afternoon.

04/21/99 - MSU signee Jeff Hunter of New Hope and now at Meridian Community College won his 1st game of the season Sunday afternoon against Delgado. He is 1 and 1 for the season. According to the Meridian Star, Jeff has suffered from back problems since early in the year and was pitching in just his 5th game of the year. The paper went on to say that Jeff is a key in the Eagle's drive to win another Region 23 championship.
04/20/99 - MSU moved up in the polls. The Diamond Dawgs are now 6th in the Collegiate Baseball poll, 7th in the USA TODAY Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll and 8th in the Baseball America poll.
Don't forget, MSU takes on UAB in Birmingham tonight. If you live in that area show your support by attending the game. Help set a Bulldog attendance record.
04/19/99 - Once again, MSU defeated Tennessee. This time the score was 13-10. MSU is now 31-8 overall and 11-6 in the SEC, which puts them in 3rd place, 2.5 games behind Arkansas.
Hitting star:
Next up is LSU at MSU next weekend. Make plans on attending the games this coming weekend. Let's see if we can reach that 10,000+ figure again. BTW, did you know there is supposed to be over 40 MLB scouts at MSU this weekend?
Notes from Joe Dier (MSU Media Relations)
DOGS WIN FIFTH CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE SERIES -- Mississippi State took to the road to claim its fifth consecutive SEC weekend series, rebounding from a 6-4 opening night setback to down Tennessee 9-2 and 13-10 in Knoxville, Tenn. Now 11-6 in the Southeastern Conference, the Bulldogs are 5-3 away from home in league play. Saturday's 9-2 win made the Bulldogs the second 30-game winner in the SEC this year.
ANOTHER SOLID 3-1 WEEK -- In addition to their 2-1 showing at Tennessee, Mississippi State posted an 11-2 midweek win on the road against Jackson State. The Bulldogs hit .318 in the four-game span with nine doubles, a triple, five home runs and 35 RBI. MSU pitchers registered 48 strikeouts in the four-game period, 36 at Tennessee.
ERROR-FREE WEEK -- The Diamond Dogs paced the nation in fielding percentage in the second weekly listing of NCAA Division I statistics issued last week. And an error-free run of four games will keep Mississippi State atop the national defensive stats for another week. MSU enters the week with a splendid .976 fielding mark in 39 games and a .980 fielding percentage in SEC competition. State has played 17 games without being charged with an error, 10 of those in conference competition.
WHO'S HOT -- Bulldog junior shortstop Travis Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla.) continues to set the pace for the Bulldogs at the plate after earning SEC Player of the Week honors last week. Chapman went 9-for-21 over the last four games and 7-for-16 with 3 RBI against Tennessee. In Saturday's 9-2 win Chapman went 5-for-5 with a three-run home run, is lone extra-base hit over the past week. He leads MSU with a .439 batting average with 65 hits, a .581 slugging percentage, 31 walks and five sacrifice flies while ranking second on the club with 40 RBI. Chapman is hitting .424 in league competition.
ANOTHER .400 HITTER -- MSU has a second .400 hitter in its starting lineup, senior second baseman Chris Lotterhos of Germantown, Tenn. Lotto, currently riding a career-best 12-game hitting streak, is hitting .400 after turning in a 5-for-13 (.385), 5-RBI performance at Tennessee. Two of his five hits were doubles.
THOMS SETS SEASON HIGH MARK FOR STRIKEOUTS --Bulldog senior righthander Hank Thoms turned in a career pitching performance in MSU's 9-2 Saturday night win at Tennessee. The Newton, Miss., product and team tri-captain registered a staff season-high and career-best 16 strikeouts in a career-first nine-inning complete-game pitching performance. Thoms (6-2, 2.00) ranked second in the SEC in ERA prior to his splendid weekend performance. Against the Vols Thoms scattered five hits and issued but three walks. Thoms owns a 3-2 record with a 2.53 ERA in league competition. He and MSU junior righthander Matt Ginter (6-4, 3.34) share the team strikeout lead with 78.
04/18/99 - MSU (30-8 overall, 10-6 in the SEC) defeats Tennessee 9 to 2 behind the 5-hit pitching of senior Hank Thoms. A 5-run third inning put the Diamond Dogs ahead to stay. Hank's final stats were 9 IP, 5 hits, 16 K's, 3 salks and 2 earned runs.
Travis Chapman went 5 for 5 with a 3-run home run. Cliff Wren had a couple of hits, including a home run, a sacrifice fly and 3 RBI's. Jamie Rock also had two hits (2 doubles) and 2 RBIs.
04/17/99 - MSU loses to Tennessee 6 to 4. Tennessee scored 4 runs in the 5th inning when usually reliable Matt Ginter walked 3 then threw a wild pitch followed by a couple of base hits. Up until then, he was sailing along with a no-hitter. His final stats on the night were 7 IP, 3 Hits, 9 K's, 7 Walks and 5 Runs (all earned). Tough, tough way to lose a ballgame.
04/16/99 - MSU takes on Tennessee at Knoxville tonight.
04/16/99 - Just received stats on MSU signee Matthew Brinson:
Another stat that is of significance is he has struck out just 5 times in about 100 plate appearances. Matthew's team, Northwest Rankin is 23-5 on the season and ranked 9th.
04/15/99 - According to Baseball America mid-season college baseball update, Miss State is projected as a regional number one seed. What will surprise most of us MSU fans is they also project Ole Miss, or Mississippi as they call them, as a regional team also. Click here to go to Baseball America's website for the complete seedings.
Baseball America also have a little info on our very own Matt Ginter. Click here to go to the complete article.
04/15/99 - Walnut HS junior baseball player Trave Hopkins' stats as of last night:
Someone asked me to post any updates on who MSU might be recruiting in the spring. As of today, I have no info on any possible recruits.
One more thing, I need stats for our signees. I know there are several of you who can provide me with this type info. How about emailing me the info or faxing it to me at 601-356-4923. Thanks in advance.
04/14/99 - The 7th ranked Bulldogs (29-7) defeated Jackson State 11 to 2 last night. Freshmen (Brock, Larson and Carroll) and sophomores (Freed and Estel) did all the pitching for MSU. According to Coach McMahon, during his post-game show, Ryan Carroll was impressive as was Mark Freed (winner). Tanner Brock was a little tender and did not have his normal velocity. Justin Estel closed out the game, allowing no runs. Adam Larson also pitched a shutout inning.
Other tidbits from Coach McMahon during his post-game show: Ty Martin played third for Wright (just wanted to give Wright a day off) and was very impressive defensively. Catcher Ryan McGrath, playing because of a minor injury to Chris Curry, was also very impressive.
04/13/99 - MSU is now a consensus top 10 teams in all three major polls (7th, 9th, 9th). Travis Chapman was named SEC Player of the Week.
Don't forget, the Diamond Dawgs take on Jackson State at 6:30 tonight in Jackson.
04/12/99 - 7th ranked MSU, now 28-7 overall, defeated Alabama 10 to 9. I attended a wedding, therefore, I have no stats. Click here for complete details via the official MSU baseball site.
Tidbits from MSU Media Relations Joe Dier (a slimmed down Joe I might add):
STILL ROLLING -- Mississippi State's Diamond Dogs are making a strong case for themselves as one of the true surprise teams of the 1999 campaign. State posted a 4-1 record over the past week and at 28-7 are poised to become the season's second 30-game winner in the Southeastern Conference. In five games MSU out-scored its two opponents 50-24 and after climbing to the top of the three primary team statistical categories are also venturing into the realm of college baseball's national statistical leaders.
NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS -- In the first weekly release of NCAA Division I college baseball statistics, Mississippi State led the nation in team fielding percentage (.973), ranked fourth in team earned run average (3.10), third in scoring (11.07) and seventh in team batting (.355). MSU led the Southeastern Conference in all three categories. Entering the week, MSU is hitting .353 with 100 doubles, 13 triples and 45 home runs, is fielding at a .973 rate with 29 double plays, and sports a 3.32 team earned run average with 346 strikeouts.
WHO'S HOT -- Bulldog junior shortstop Travis Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been the most consistent performer at the plate for MSU in 1999. Chapman leads the club with a .441 mark and is tied for second on the club with 37 RBI. He also leads the team in walks (30), sacrifice flies (5), on-base percentage (.545) and has fanned just eight times in 127 at-bats. In last week's five games against Northeast Louisiana and No. 16 Alabama, Chapman went 9-for-18 (.500), driving in 15 runs, belting three doubles, two home runs, walking three times, reaching once as a hit batsman and delivering a sacrifice fly. Chapman also sports a dandy .965 fielding percentage at short.
IF YOU HOST IT THEY WILL COME -- Mississippi State has long ranked among the nation's leaders in yearly attendance. Now another attendance mark has found its way into the MSU record book with this past weekend's three-game home series against SEC Western Division rival Alabama. A gathering of 10,050, the 10th-largest gathering at MSU's Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium, watched MSU down Alabama 5-4 on Saturday. And the three-game weekend series attracted 23,394 (turnstile count) to "The Dude", easily shattering the previous weekend series school-record attendance mark of 21,725 set against Alabama in 1997. MSU averaged 5,555 per game during its just-concluded eight-game homestand.
DOUBLE TROUBLE -- The Bulldogs belted seven doubles during their three-game series with Alabama, raising the team doubles total to 100. Seventeen different MSU players have belted two-baggers, four in double digits led by third baseman Daron Wright (13). MSU is on track to shatter the school mark for doubles in a season (157 set in 1989).
GINTER LEADS IN K's AGAIN -- After a week out of the lead, MSU junior righthander Matt Ginter (6-3, 2.98) is back on top of the pitching staff's strikeout charts. The Winchester, Ky., product paces the MSU staff with 69 whiffs, just ahead of senior righthander Hank Thoms (5-2, 2.00) at 62.
HEATED RBI CHASE -- A 7-RBI week for sophomore leftfielder Jon Knott has vaulted the Venice, Fla., product atop MSU's RBI charts with 39. But there's quite a battle underway for the team lead. Brian Wiese drove in seven runs and launched three home runs in the past five games to bring his total to 37, tied with Travis Chapman. Three others have at least 25 RBI.
TAKE A BC POWDER -- Bulldog senior relief pitcher Brian Compton (4-0, 3.93) had a busy but productive week pitching for MSU. The Brandon, Miss., product pitched in four of MSU's five games, earning a win in MSU's 5-4 Saturday win over Alabama and returning on Sunday to nail down MSU's 10-9 victory, earning his second save of the season. Compton is 8-0 with three saves and a 2.88 career ERA in two seasons with the Bulldogs.
04/12/99 - MSU softball was swept 1-0, 5-1, 5-2, 5-4 by host 10th ranked LSU this past Friday and Saturday. Click here for details.
04/11/99 - MSU defeated Alabama 5 to 4 last night behind the clutch 3-run home run of junior Travis Chapman. Other MSU Bulldogs with homers were Jon Knott and Brian Wiese (2-run homer). Senior Hank Thoms pitched a great game for the first 7 innings before giving way to winner Brian Compton.
Attendance was 10,050 (10th largest crowd in MSU history). Friday night's attendance was 7,159.
MSU and Alabama conclude their 3-game series today beginning at 1:30. I'll have to miss this one due to a wedding of one of my co-workers. Pull them through Bulldog fans.
04/10/99 - MSU was defeated by Alabama 6 to 4 last night. Junior pitcher Matt Ginter pitched a good game but the walks and two errors really hurt him. You have to give Alabama credit, they didn't hit the ball that hard but they did the little things it takes to win a game. MSU and Alabama play the second game today at 4 p.m. See you there. BTW, the crowd looked to be in the 6,000 to 7,000 range. Hope we have between 8,000 to 10,000 today. Please make it to the baseball game if you attend the football scrimmage.
04/09/99 - Check out this link to see why MSU is ranked so high in all the baseball polls. Now that you know why we are so good, how about coming to the games this weekend. Let's see how close we can come to that 14,000+ record crowd we had a few years ago.
04/09/99 - Here is a little info on MSU softball's victory over Delta State Tuesday night. For complete details click here.
Winning Pitcher: Kayla Calvert. Threw a 2-hitter.
Hitting stars:
Did you know the softball team has now won 8 straight games, including 7 straight in the SEC? They are now tied for 2nd in the SEC West.
04/08/99 - MSU completed the sweep of Northeast Louisiana with an 18 to 1 victory behind the pitching of freshmen Tanner Brock, Ryan Carroll, Jim Abraham, sophomore Mark Freed and senior Brian Compton. Tanner picked up the victory, throwing 5 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit, 2 walks, while striking out 4. This was the first ever appearance for Ryan and Jim, both of whom threw 1 inning of no run ball while allowing 1 hit and 1 walk.
Hitting star were numerous (here's a few):
MSU, now 26-6 on the season, prepares for a crucial three-game series with SEC foe Alabama. Make plans on being there to cheer our Dogs on to victory.
04/08/99 Click here to read Andy K's Dugout Club meeting report.
04/07/99 - MSU, now 25-6 on the season, defeated Northeast Louisiana 13 to 6 last night. Before you say Northeast who, this is the same team that split against Arkansas (both 2-run games), defeated LSU by 1 run and lost to Ole Miss by 1 run. They are definitely a very good team. Back to the game. True freshman Adam Larson started the game and went 3.3 innings and showed good velocity (86-90 mph fastball). Once Adam learns to locate the ball, he will have the chance to be a very good SEC rotation pitcher. Junior Kevin Donovan took over for Adam and pitched 3 innings. Sophomore Justin Estel threw the last 2.7 innings and earned the victory, his first as a Bulldog.
Some of the hitting stars:
MSU and Northeast La. complete the 2-game series with a game today at 3 p.m. Redshirt freshman Tanner Brock will be the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs.
04/06/99 - Don't forget, the now 7th ranked Bulldogs play Northeast Louisiana tonight at 6:30.
04/05/99 - Auburn defeated our Bulldogs 8 to 2 behind excellent pitching. Senior Scott Polk took the loss, his first of the season.
Hitting heroes:
MSU, now 24-6 on the season, takes on Northeast Louisiana Tuesday night (6:30) and Wednesday (3:00) afternoon. Hope to see you at the Tuesday night game.
04/04/99 - In another display of total team effort, MSU (24-5, 7-3 in the SEC) defeated #2 ranked Auburn (27-6, 7-4 in the SEC) 16-2. Senior Hank Thoms shut down the high-powered Auburn offense while the MSU hitters put on a great hitting display against one of the top pitchers in the SEC.
Hitting heroes:
Bulldog Notes:
04/03/99 - 9th ranked MSU (23-5) defeated 2nd ranked Auburn (27-5) 13-3 yesterday. MSU's Matt Ginter, hitting in the low 90's with his fastball, was the winning pitcher, throwing 7 inning while allowing 3 runs and 8 hits. He also struck out 5 batters and walked 3.
Leading hitters were:
MSU has now scored in double digits in their last 3 official SEC games. In SEC games only, they are averaging 7.7 runs per game and hitting in the .312 to .313 range. In their last 10 games, they have won 7. In their last 7 SEC games, they have won 5. MSU is now 16-2 at home. The two home losses were 1-run affairs.
MSU and Auburn continue their series with a single game today at 5 p.m.
P.S. MSU will bid on a regional according to a Larry Templeton quote I saw in the Commercial Dispatch (Columbus, MS. newspaper). He was not sure about bidding on a Super Regional because of the U.S. Women's Open Golf Tournament, which will be played at West Point's Old Waverly Golf Course on the same weekend.
04/03/99 - MSU softball (21-14, 6-4 in the SEC) defeated Arkansas 5-2 and 4-0 yesterday. Autumn Anderson, picking up her 12th win of the season, threw a 5-hitter the first game while Kayla Calvert won the second game (her 6th win, 1st SEC victory). Kellie Wilkerson picked up her 5th save in the 2nd game.
Leading hitters were:
MSU and Arkansas continue their series today with a DH beginning at 12 p.m.
04/02/99 - Hope all of you are making plans on being at the game tonight (game time 6:30) as our 9th ranked Diamond Dawgs entertain the 2nd ranked Auburn Tigers.
04/02/99 - Here is the latest Trave Hopkins (Walnut (MS) HS, junior, SS/P) info (why is MSU not looking at this kid?):
21 games, batting .538, 10 homers, 14 doubles, 37 runs scored, 25 RBI's, 25 stolen bases, 14 walks.
Some of the schools that are rumored to have shown interest: Florida State, Penn State, Arkansas, LSU, Southern Miss, Houston, UNLV, Georgia Southern, Eastern Michigan, North Alabama and numerous small colleges and junior colleges.
04/01/99 - The 9th ranked Bulldogs came out on the short end of the Mayor's Trophy Cup game last night 10-6. MSU's sophomore pitcher Mark Freed took the lost for the Dawgs. True freshman pitcher Adam Larson came in in relief of Mark and pitch well. Sophomore pitcher Justin Estel and redshirt freshman pitcher Tanner Brock followed Adam to the mound and shut down the Rebels. Senior pitcher Brian Compton finished the game. Even though we lost the game, it was great for the young pitchers to get SEC experience. Sorry to see redshirt freshman Ryan Carroll did not get into the game. It is rumored that he will be pitching in a few midweek games very soon because he has looked good in practice.
Hope all of you are making plans on being at the games this weekend as our Diamond Dawgs entertain the 2nd ranked Auburn Tigers. First game is 6:30 p.m. Friday night. Hope to see you there.
