08/25/99 - Thought you guys would enjoy reading this email that I received late last night:

I enjoyed a wonderful baseball game tonight. I went to see Kevin Donovan pitch for the Memphis Royals against a team from China in the Global International Baseball Tournament in Millington, TN. As you already know, the Memphis Royals won the amateur championship in the United States, and, hence, are the representative for the United States in this tournament.

China and USA were both undefeated going into this game. The Chinese team is very disciplined and extremely competitive. The Chinese pitcher was really sharp tonight and was given a grand ovation when he finally left the game in the eighth inning. It was USA 3, China 2 going into the bottom of the eighth when USA erupted for 4 runs and the final 7 to 2 win.

But, even as good as the Chinese pitcher was, Kevin Donovan was simply dominating. The two runs given up were both unearned runs (USA committed 5 errors behind Kevin to keep him in hot water most of the night). Kevin pitched a complete game, striking out a mere 15 batters, while giving up only 3 bases on balls. He picked off two batters, and should have picked off another, but one of the five errors occurred when the first baseman overthrew the ball to second base. Kevin gave up four hits. The first was a Texas Leaguer that should have been caught. The other three were all opposite field hits. I'm telling you, he was simply dominating tonight.

There are two other Diamond Dawgs on this team. Jon Harden (8 - 0 this season), and Carl Henderson, who played second base tonight.

Kevin's stats for this season are as follows:
9 wins, 1 loss, 1 save
64.1 innings
43 hits
26 runs
18 earned runs
19 walks
96 Ks (he will more than likely break his own team record of 99 Ks in a season, which he accomplished in 1996, his first season with the Memphis Royals.

Kevin won the honor of being the National Championship Tournament Most Outstanding pitcher earlier this year.

08/13/99 - On Tuesday night, the Danville Dans defeated the Quincy Gems in the Championship Game of the CICL Post-Season Tournament, 10 to 4. For the tournament, MSU Diamond Dawg Mark Freed recorded a 0.00 ERA in 4.3 innings and Diamond Dawg Jon Knott was named Player of the Tournament.

Jon was also named Player of the First Half of the Season as well as Mike Schmidt Player of the Year, after finishing in the top 6 of at least 5 offensive categories.

08/05/99 - MSU Diamond Dawg Kevin Donovan was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher in the United States Baseball Congress Semi-Pro World Series in Evansville, IN. this past weekend. He was also the winning pitcher in the championship game win over the Evansville Outlaws. And also picked up a win in relief in a game against Pensacola, FL.

08/02/99 - Watch these high school baseball players the next one to two years. You may be seeing them in Maroon and White after their high school careers.

  • Les Dykes - Big lefthanded pitcher who throws very hard. Will be a junior at Parklane Academy this coming year. Has been known to go the distance quite often. Good youngster who is very intelligent and very competitive.
  • John Jay - A senior-to-be at McComb (MS) HS. According to my source, John is one of the most naturally talented and instinctive young baseball players he has ever seen. A natural 3rd baseman who has extremely quick hands. Also very strong, unreal competitive level, and a great team player.
  • Matthew Tolbert - A senior-to-be at Centerville Academy. A one-position player (shortstop) who has few shortstop equals, according to my source. Extremely fast with a very strong arm. A switch-hitter who appears to be comfortable on either side of the plate. Also an excellent base-stealer.
  • Brett Cleveland - An up-and-coming junior baseball player from Independence, MS. A pitcher / 3rd baseman who throws very hard. For the past two seasons, he has led his team in hitting with averages of .520 and .563. Has played with the Memphis Tigers every summer since he was 10-years old. Has camped at LSU baseball several times.
