09/28/99 - I attended the first fall MSU baseball practice yesterday. Redshirt freshman lefthanded pitcher Steven Dowe appears to be fully recovered from the injury that kept him from playing last season. Steven threw 2 innings of 1-run, 1-hit ball while striking out 3.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Although the Mississippi State University softball team is just one week into Fall practice, Bulldog head coach Kathy Arendsen ¡s excitement level is as high as its ever been when talking about this season's squad.
"This is a championship-caliber team," said Arendsen of her squad. "This is the first year that I have been able to say that. We will compete with everyone. All of the attributes are there - attitude, desire, work ethic and chemistry. We have some great people on the team and I am very excited about the upcoming season."
The Bulldogs will hold their first scrimmage of the Fall season Saturday morning when Mississippi State divides itself into Maroon and White teams for an intra-squad game at Bulldog Diamond. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
The scrimmage will consist of live hitting and pitching in a six-inning game format.
"This is our first real chance to see them in a competitive situation and to find out how they will respond," Arendsen said. "I am very pleased with practice this week. The kids came back in great shape and I am happy with our progress."
Mississippi State returns seven starters off of last season's 38-29 campaign which saw the Bulldogs fall a few picks short of an NCAA Regional bid, despite storming into the SEC Tournament semifinals.
Offensively, the Bulldogs will be led by sophomore centerfielder Kellie Wilkerson, who crushed 13 home runs last season while turning in a .443 batting average, both tops in the Southeastern Conference. Defensively, State will be anchored by a very experienced infield, along with senior catcher Keri McCallum who participated in the 2000 Olympic Games Trials earlier this month in Michigan.
But, the excitement level of the Bulldogs could also stem from its pitching staff where Mississippi State is overflowing. Alabama transfer Kasey Whitehead, who turned in a sub-2.00 ERA last season in Tuscaloosa, along with freshmen Jennifer Pursell, Jennifer Nelson, Nicole Moschetti and Courtney Frank, will comprise a pitching staff that has received high regards from Arendsen.
"This staff is arguably one of the best that we have had here, but we will have to see down the road," Arendsen said. "We have some very competitive and passionate athletes on this year's staff. They are very eager and intense players that will push to play."

STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The final numbers are in, and Mississippi State's Baseball Bulldogs finished among the nation's top five in attendance during the 1999 season.
In a ranking of Division I college programs compiled by Tucson-based Collegiate Baseball magazine, Mississippi State was fourth in average home attendance (4,604 on 33 dates) and fourth nationally in regular season home attendance (151,941). MSU was fifth in total home attendance, which includes attendance figures from regional tournament games.
The Mississippi State-Alabama game in Starkville drew 10,050, the 10th baseball gathering eclipsing the 10,000 mark at Dudy Noble Field. The weekend series with the Tide drew 23,394 fans, the most for a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
Seating capacity at MSU's Dudy Noble Field will climb to an estimated 7,500 this spring with the addition of more than 600 chairback seats and 18 skyboxes to the 6,700-seat grandstand. Mississippi State set the NCAA on-campus attendance record in 1989 when 14,991 watched a Mississippi State-Florida doubleheader.
The Southeastern Conference placed five teams in the top 10 and 10 among the top 27 attendance leaders in the 1999 college baseball attendance rankings.
