Men's Basketball - I droved to Albany, Georgia Saturday to watch the Florida - Georgia High School All-Star basketball game. MSU had two players, Marcus Campbell and Winsome Fraizer, participating in it.

Here are my unofficial stats for each player:
7-1, 260-pound, man/child Marcus Campbell: 8-of-15 from the field, 1-of-2 from the free throw line. 17 total points. 13 Rebounds. Played much better in the second half than first half. When the game was on the line, he played with great effort and determination. Good passer.
6-3, Winsome Frazier: 4-of-14 from the field (1-of-6 from 3-point range). 3-of-4 from the free throw line. 12 total points. 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and two spectacular dunks. Plays with great effort and has a chance to be an outstanding defensive player. Super quick. Good at stealing passes due to great anticipation. Averaged 25 points per game and 9 rebounds per game his senior season. Looks a lot like current Bulldog Timmy Bowers in the face and body build.

Women's Basketball - Mississippi State women's basketball head coach Sharon Fanning announced Tuesday the signing of two players of the year to the Lady Bulldog program.

Tupelo's Tan White, a 5'8 shooting guard, was selected as the 2001 Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year following a stellar senior season in which she led her team to the class 5A state championship title. Fanning went the junior college route in search of a point guard and landed Alabama juco player of the year Daphne Renea Jones of Bishop State Community College.

White averaged 24.4 points per game as a senior at Tupelo High School. She pulled down 7.8 rebounds per game and averaged 2.7 blocks per contest. White dished out 5.6 assists per game while shooting 71 percent from the free-throw line.

White was selected as a Parade All-American and was chosen to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game which is scheduled to be played June 9 in Florence, Ala., at the University of North Alabama.

"Tan has the potential to be a great player in the SEC," said Fanning. "She understands the game and has excellent court awareness. We are recruiting Tan as a two-guard. She has a tremendous knack for the game, which should make her an impact player as a freshman."

Jones, a 5-foot-7 product of Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., averaged 18 points per game and dished out six assists as a sophomore at Bishop State. Besides being named player of the year, she garnered first-team all-Regional Alabama Junior College honors for the second time. She was also named first-team all-State for the second consecutive season.

"Renea is a quick and aggressive athlete," said Fanning. "She is an enthusiastic point guard who understands the game. She is a winner and a competitor who will make a difference in the Lady Bulldog basketball program."

Women's Basketball - Tupelo HS basketball standout guard Tan White inked with the MSU Lady Bulldogs yesterday. Tan is consided by some as one of the top girls' basketball players in the history of Mississippi High School basketball.

04/11/01 - I'm not sure if MSU will sign any players today but I have heard from very good sources that they very likely will sign a 6-9 power forward by the name of Michael Ignerski. during the spring signing period. Michael, who is from Lublin, Poland, shot 49% from the three-point range this past season at Eastern Oklahoma State College.

MSU is also looking at several junior college point guards and is expected to sign one of them during the spring signing period. All are highly thought of. To read more about them, click here.

Men's Basketball - Members of coach Rick Stansbury's 2000-2001 Bulldog basketball team were honored Monday night on the MSU campus, as Mississippi State University held its 23rd annual Babe McCarthy Tip-off Club Awards Banquet.

In earning their seventh postseason tournament berth since 1990, the Bulldogs' quarterfinal-round appearance in the 2001 TiVo National Invitation Tournament marked the team's best NIT showing in school history. Finishing the campaign with an 18-13 overall record, MSU knocked off in-state foe Southern Miss and Pittsburgh during postseason play before falling at home to eventual NIT champion Tulsa. While earning a school-record tying 13 home wins on the season, State's pre-conference slate was highlighted by a 75-74 road victory over NCAA runner-up Arizona in the tournament championship game of the Wildcats' Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson.

Individually, senior guard Antonio Jackson collected a team-high three awards at Monday's season-ending basketball awards banquet. In addition to garnering the club's Most Assists Award as well as receiving a Senior Award, Jackson was voted by the Bulldog coaching staff as the team's Best Offensive Player. The two-year starter from Huntsville averaged a team-leading 12.8 points and 3.2 assists per game this past season, while also ranking among the SEC statistical leaders in made three-pointers per game (1.90/gm) for the second consecutive year.

Also a recipient of a Senior Award, veteran forward Tang Hamilton earned the Bailey Howell Rebounding Award as the squad's top rebounder (6.8 rpg) on the year. In matching Tyrone Washington's all-time school standard by appearing in 123 career games for the Bulldogs, the Jackson native concluded his four-year collegiate career ranked 10th on MSU's all-time list with 1,307 career points and 11th with 677 career rebounds. The three-year starter joined former State standouts Bailey Howell and Rickey Brown as the third player in school history to total 1,300 or more career points and 650 or more career rebounds.

In becoming just the fourth Mississippi State player to win the coveted Babe McCarthy Memorial Award during back-to-back seasons, senior forward T.J. Billups was a repeat winner of the honor given annually to the Bulldog player who best exemplifies the highest traits of character, leadership, desire and hustle. The two-time team co-captain from Jackson was a member of this year's SEC Good Works Team in recognition of his community service, along with earning a spot on the 2000-2001 SEC Men's Basketball Academic Honor Roll.

Senior center Quentin Smith was awarded the team's Most Improved Player honor after emerging as a late-season starter for the Bulldogs. The Vicksburg native averaged 6.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over the year's final six games, including 10 points at Pittsburgh and a season-high 12 points versus Tulsa during TiVo NIT postseason action. Both Smith and Billups will be awarded their bachelor's degrees next month in industrial technology and sports communication, respectively.

In leading this year's Bulldog contingent with 20 blocked shots and 36 steals for the season, sophomore guard Derrick Zimmerman was selected as MSU's Best Defensive Player by the Mississippi State coaching staff. The former Louisiana high school player of the year ended the year as one of the team's hottest players, having averaged 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game during MSU's quarterfinal-round run in the TiVo NIT.

Rounding out the team's individual awards this season were junior swingman Marckell Patterson (Best Free-Throw Percentage Award; 79.6%), freshman guard Roy Goffer (Academic Award; 3.40 GPA), and walk-on Ward Griffith and manager Jacob Norton (Senior Awards).
