STARKVILLE, Miss. - Tabbed with their highest preseason national ranking since the school's 1995-96 Final Four campaign, the 12th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs tip off their season-opening, six-game homestand - their longest season-opening homestand since the 1944-45 season - by playing host
to the Ragin' Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Saturday evening on the MSU campus. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum, following State's 1:30 p.m. home football contest against Arkansas.
Ranked tied for 12th in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll and 13th nationally in the ESPN/USA Today preseason coaches' poll, coach Rick Stansbury's Bulldogs completed their preseason sweep of exhibition competition by claiming a 93-72 home triumph over the Harlem Globetrotters on Nov. 14. Prior to that 21-point victory, MSU posted an 80-56 preseason win over the Branch West Basketball Academy of California on Nov. 9.
As a team this preseason, Mississippi State maintained a +22.5 scoring margin, including a commanding 101-59 second-half scoring differential, and a +12.0 rebounding margin during exhibition action. The Bulldogs shot a collective 48 percent from the field, 35 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 79 percent from the free-throw line. Defensively, MSU limited the preseason opposition to just 36 percent collective field-goal shooting and only 64.0 points per exhibition contest.
Individually during the preseason, junior guard Timmy Bowers paced all Bulldog scorers with 18.0 points per exhibition outing on 14-of-30 shooting overall and 6-of-12 accuracy from behind the arc. Sophomore center Marcus Campbell registered double-doubles in both exhibition contests, averaging 17.5 points on 15-of-22 (68%) field-goal shooting as well as 10.0 rebounds per game. Derrick Zimmerman (11.5 ppg), Ontario Harper (11.5) and Winsome Frazier (10.0) also scored in double figures during the preseason.
Guided by sixth-year head coach Jessie Evans, Louisiana-Lafayette registered exhibition wins over Arkansas Tech (95-74) and Sport Tours (111-86) this preseason. A year ago, the Ragin' Cajuns were 20-11 overall and 11-4 in Sun Belt Conference play en route to claiming the league's West Division title and advancing to the NIT. Picked this preseason by the league's coaches to repeat as West champions, UL Lafayette is expected to be paced by senior swingman Anthony Johnson, who averaged a team-leading 14.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest as an all-Sun Belt Conference performer a season ago.
Dating back to the 1961-62 season, MSU owns an 11-3 all-time series lead over Louisiana-Lafayette, including last year's 79-71 State road victory over the Ragin' Cajuns to mark their lone home setback of 2001-02. With a 4-0 mark against UL Lafayette in games played in Starkville through the years, the Bulldogs recorded a 96-75 home triumph over the Cajuns during the 1975-76 campaign in the most recent Starkville meeting between the two teams.
