Former Mississippi State all-SEC point guards Derrick Zimmerman of the Columbus Riverdragons and Timmy Bowers of the Asheville Altitude will be going head-to-head this Saturday (April 23) in the 2005 NBDL Championship Tournament Finals presented by Delta Air Lines. Tip-off for the NBDL's championship game is set for 7 p.m. at the Columbus (Ga.) Civic Center. The National Basketball Development League regular-season champion Riverdragons have homecourt advantage for Saturday's 2005 NBDL Championship Tournament Finals presented by Delta Air Lines after claiming the No. 1 seed with a league-best 30-18 record. Asheville, the No. 2 seed after posting a 27-21 regular-season mark, is the defending champion, having defeated Huntsville last season for the NBDL crown. The Altitude will attempt to become the NBDL's first back-to-back postseason champion.

Zimmerman, who lettered at MSU from 2000-03, was selected the NBDL's Defensive Player of the Year for the 2004-05 season. A second-team all-league selection this past season, Zimmerman finished the 2004-05 regular season ranked second in the NBDL in assists (5.6 apg) and third in steals (1.9 spg), along with averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for former MSU All-American Jeff Malone.

Bowers, who graduated from State a year ago as the school's all-time winningest basketball player, ranked seventh in the NBDL in both assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.3 spg) during the regular season. The Gulfport native also averaged 9.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest this year for coach Joey Meyer. Former SEC standouts Ron Slay (Tennessee) and Tony Kitchings (South Carolina) also compete on this year's Asheville Altitude squad.
