STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State University junior forward Piotr Stelmach and incoming freshman center Vernon Goodridge will begin competition for SCORE International this weekend in Germany as part of an International Basketball Outreach sponsored by Phil Waldrep Ministries.
Stelmach, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound native of Poland, will compete on SCORE International's college team, while the 6-foot-9, 220-pound Goodridge will participate on the high school club. Guided by Tommy Kyle, currently the athletic director and head basketball coach at Decatur (Ala.) Heritage Christian Academy, this year's touring SCORE International college team is also comprised of fellow SEC standouts Stephen McDowell and Renaldo Balkman from South Carolina, the Vanderbilt tandem of Dan Cage and Julian Terrell, along with Ole Miss junior Bam Doyne. Both Florida State and Clemson have also sent a pair of players on the Germany trip. The touring high school squad will be piloted by Anthony Clark, who presently serves as the head basketball coach at UMS-Wright in Mobile, Ala.
Stelmach has played in 38 career games for coach Rick Stansbury's Bulldogs, having averaged 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per contest, in addition to shooting 72 percent from the field, in 19 appearances a year ago for State's 23-11 NCAA Tournament ballclub. Goodridge, a Brooklyn native, was a consensus top 50 national prospect after averaging around 11.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.0 blocked shots per game this past season for nationally ranked Lutheran Christian Academy in Philadelphia, Pa.
This year's International Basketball Outreach event will take place in various locations in Germany beginning this weekend and continuing into next week. Along with taking on international pro clubs and American military base teams, the SCORE International college team is slated to play in the prestigious Nation's Cup International Tournament in Muster, Germany, which will feature teams from Turkey, Germany, Russia, and the United States. The high school contingent is set to compete against high school level teams from Germany as well as American military bases.
A year ago, current State sophomore forward Charles Rhodes and former Bulldog center Marcus Campbell starred for SCORE International during the team's International Basketball Outreach in the Dominican Republic. Earlier this summer, rising senior center Wesley Morgan and redshirt freshman forward Jerrell Houston of the Bulldogs helped lead the Sports Reach team to a 7-0 record during an international mission trip to the Far East.
