1998-1999 MSU Basketball Recruiting Prospects.

08/25/98 - According to a source of mine, MSU signee Tyrus Boswell was seen at the Sanderson Rec Center and looked very, very good playing against the other MSU basketball players. The strong rumor is Tyrus will attend MSU as a part-time student and continue taking his ACT test. My source said Tyrus is as close to making his score as you possibly can be.

08/24/98 - In my opinion, look for Miss State to sign the following players this coming year (fall and spring signing periods):
Alonzo Lane - 6-6 Forward, Canton (MS) HS
Jonathan Bender - 6-11 Forward/Center, Picayune (MS) HS
Lincoln Smith - 6-9, 280 Center, Simmons HS (Hollandale MS)

Others that MSU is serious about and may sign:
Ronald Dupree - 6-6.5 Small Forward, Biloxi (MS) HS
Charles Tatum - 5-10 Point Guard, Midland (TX) HS

All should be academically eligible according to my sources.

We are one of five finalists for Tatum. My sources have differences of opinions as to whether we will sign Dupree. One said MSU have a good chance of signing him. The other source feels he will not sign with MSU.

08/21/98 - Just thought you would like to know MSU signee Tyrus Boswell will either be on scholarship as a partial qualifier this coming basketball season or be a part-time student the fall semester and continue taking his ACT (he is extremely close to making the score he needs to be eligible). If he decides to be a part-time student and passes his ACT, he will be able to play basketball next semester (Spring 1999). Dawgs' Bite is reporting the same thing in this weeks issue, therefore this info can be considered confirmed.

08/21/98 - Pending official approval, the new Administrative Assistant Basketball Coach will be Miss State graduate Bill Ball. Bill, who is married to Cameron Ball, also a MSU graduate, has coached basketball at the University of Arkansas-Montecello (head coach and assistant coach), Delta State (graduate assistant coach) and Itawamba CC (assistant coach). The word is Bill is a very hard worker who will bring a lot of enthusiasm to our basketball team.

08/21/98 - BTW, Mississippi Hoops' Kevin Henderson told me Wednesday night that George Brooks, a former Miss State basketball player, is doing a great job bringing in the talent at Meridian CC.

08/21/98 - Check out Mark Doiron's webpage if you live in the Jackson area and are looking for insurance.

08/16/98 - This is the latest info that I have on MSU signee Tyrus Boswell.

There are three possible scenarios:
1) He will fully qualify
or 2) He will be a partial qualifier
or 3) He will be a part-time student and continue taking his ACT test until he makes the necessary score.

At least we know he will be at Miss State. Hopefully, the official word will be known in the next few days.

08/14/98 - According to one of my sources, one of the basketball players told him he expects Miss State to run more of an up tempo type offense this year, creating more scoring. The player also likes new coach, Rick Stansbury a great deal.

08/13/98 - In case you were wondering what Coach Stansbury was doing this summer while you were vacationing, go here to find out.

08/13/98 - BTW (which means by the way), according to very reliable sources, Miss State is in very good shape with Picayune's outstanding big man Jonathan Bender. Just about everybody in the country wants him and it will take an excellent recruiting effort to sign him but who else would you want recruiting him for us than Rick Stansbury?

08/13/98 - Don't be surprised when it is all said and done if all of the players Miss State signs this year are Mississippi players.

08/07/98 - Here are a couple more players Miss State is looking at for possible recruiting:

  • Jeremy McNeil - 6-8.5, C/F, Sam Houston HS, San Antonio, Texas.
  • Larry Satchell - 6-9, C/F, Waco HS, Waco, Texas. Rated the 8th best center in Future Stars' Pre-Summer publication.
  • 08/07/98 - Don't forget to purchase a tape of CD by fellow Bulldog Russell Walters. You can find an order form at his website which can be found by going here

08/06/98 - Here are a couple of players Miss State is looking at (not sure how serious we are about them and they about MSU):

  • 6-5, 1/2G Antonio Falu from Waltrip HS, Houston, Texas. Rated the 33rd best player in the country, according to Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports Pre-Summer issue.

  • 6-11, C Andy Slocum from West Monroe HS, West Monroe, Louisiana. Rated as a player with the potential to make it in the Top 100 players in the country, according to Bob Gibbons same Pre-Summer publication.
