1999-2000 MSU Basketball Recruiting Prospects (Updated 10/13/99).

10/31/99 - Notes from yesterday's scrimmages:

  • MSU played a regular scrimmage with two halves and a 10-minute scrimmage after that.
  • This team showed very good athletic ability.
  • Look for Tyrus Boswell to help the team rebounding. He grabbed 6 offensive rebounds.
  • Tang Hamilton, who scored 16 points during the regular scrimmage and 10 points in the 10 minutes scrimmage after the regular scrimmage, looks like he is ready to step up and be a player this year. He made, two-pointers, dunks and three-pointers.
  • Newcomer Antonio Jackson, as Coach Stansbury said at the Lee and Oktibbeha meetings, can flat out shoot the ball. He made 15 points during the regular scrimmage, (three 3-pointers) and 7 points in the 10 minute scrimmage (one 3-pointer).
  • T.J. Billups looked fairly good shooting the ball. He hit two 3-pointers during the regular scrimmage.
  • True freshman Derrick Zimmerman, while making just one 3-pointer, show great one-on-one ability with the ball. Very, very quick.
  • 10/29/99 (12:45 p.m.) - MSU recruit Darius Rice, of Lanier HS, plays his first game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. It is a home game. I know there are a lot of MSU fans in the Jackson, Clinton or Madison areas, so try and get together and go as a group. The more MSU fans, the better. Make sure you wear your MSU clothing. This is a great way to show Darius how much we would love to see him at MSU next season.

10/29/99 - MSU will play a basketball scrimmage Saturday morning at the Hump beginning at 9:30.

10/29/99 - Here's a little info from last night's Oktibbeha County Chapter of the MSU Alumni Association meeting.

    Oktibbeha County Chapter Awards:

  • Prestigious Young Alumnus Award: Tony Thompson
  • Alumnus of the Year: Tommy Prentice
  • Distinguished Service Award: Sonny Mullins
  • Coach Stansbury Comments:

  • A new addition to the Hump will be the Dog Pound. It will consist of 80 wild and crazy students located in the endzone (behind the goal) next to the MSU bench.
  • Two things he really loves about this team, their work ethic and their attitude.
  • Marckell Patterson, Robert Jackson and freshman Lincoln Smith bring a lot of energy to the team.
  • Freshman Derrick Zimmerman not only possesses the ability to be great but the attitude to go along with it. He is willing to do whatever it takes to be a great player.
  • Ryan Carroll brings tremendous toughness to the team.
  • Junior T. J. Billups, who along with Todd Myles are team captains this year, will complete his undergraduate this school year. Senior Todd Myles has already earned his undergraduate degree.
  • Tang Hamilton worked extremely hard from March through October and will be a different player this year.
  • It will probably be midseason before Quentin Smith will be where they want him to be.
  • 10/28/99 (8:45 a.m.) - Looks like Kentucky just picked up a 6-9 forward commitment. No, it's not Darius Rice. That makes about 5 or six young forwards that they will have on their roster next year. Click here to read the complete story....

10/28/99 - I traveled up to Tupelo yesterday to listen to Coach Stansbury speak at the Lee County Chapter of the MSU Alumni Association luncheon. Here are a few comments (complete details on my premium site).

  • Look for a new feature this year. MSU will have a remote controlled balloon that will fly around the coliseum dropping ping pong balls, which will have prize winning numbers on them.
  • Tyrone Washington was placed in Italy by the Houston Rockets.
  • Detrick White continues to try to sign on with an NBA team. If he isn't successful, he will sign with San Diego of the IBL.
  • Lincoln Smith is nursing a pulled ligament in his hand but is working hard in conditioning drills and has a chance to be a good player. He has great hands and quick feet. He has lost over 70 pounds over the last year and a half. Has a tremendous work ethic and is a great young man with a great attitude. Just needs to work on his basketball skills. Will play this year.
  • 10/26/99 (12:45 p.m.) - FAYETTEVILLE: Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson told top prospect Darius Rice of his plans for the 6-10 forward when Rice visited Arkansas this past weekend. Richardson wants Rice to score. "He said that I'm a scorer, that I'm the type of person who can shoot but also get to the free-throw line, like Todd Day was," said Rice, of Jackson (Miss.) Lanier. "I can score anywhere. He said he had some shooters, he had some passers, but he said they don't have a scorer who can do it from anywhere. He said I could do that."..... click here for the complete article......

10/26/99 - The Oktibbeha Country Chapter of the MSU Alumni Association is having their Meet the Basketball Teams and Annual Meeting this Thursday beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Seal M Club Center on the MSU campus. The meeting will begin at 6:30 with the teams (men and women) arriving at 7:00 p.m. Guest speakers will be MSU basketball coaches Rick Stansbury and Sharon Fanning. The players will be signing autographs. For more information, contact Sonny Mattox at 323-2791 or John Rush at 325-1108.

10/23/99 - Tang Hamilton, who scored in the 15 to 20 point range, was the offensive star during last night's basketball scrimmage. Newcomers Derrick Zimmerman and Antonio Jackson also looked good.

BULLDOGS TO HOLD HOMECOMING HOOPS SCRIMMAGE FRIDAY

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- As part of Mississippi State University's Homecoming activities, coach Rick Stansbury's Bulldogs will conduct an intrasquad basketball scrimmage this Friday night at the Newell-Grissom Building on the MSU campus.

Slated to begin around 8:30 p.m., basketball activities will follow MSU's 7 p.m. volleyball match against LSU. Both of Friday's sporting events at the Newell-Grissom Building are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Immediately following the conclusion of the team's intrasquad basketball scrimmage, Bulldog players and coaches will participate in a "Meet the Bulldogs" autograph session at courtside.

Mississippi State basketball fans will have two more opportunities to watch the 1999-2000 Bulldogs free of charge, as coach Stansbury's squad will play host to the Arkansas Express and BC Honved of Hungary on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13, respectively, at Humphrey Coliseum. MSU opens the regular season by entertaining Alabama A&M on Saturday, Nov. 20.

10/14/99 - MSU women's basketball has picked up three commitments. Yazoo County seniors Jackie Gainwell, Seneca Anderson and Larisha Graves, who led the Lady Panthers to the 3A state championship last March, have verbally committed to MSU, according to their coach.

    Gainwell, a 6-foot-4 All-State center, averaged 16.1 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals last season for the Lady Panthers. Anderson, a 6-1 guard/forward averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals as a junior. Graves, a 5-8 guard/forward, averaged 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals last season.

According to Yazoo County coach Patrick Nutter, "most schools wanted all three of them. Louisiana Tech recruited Jackie really heavy. 1) Jackie is probably the best rebounder that I have ever seen. She's an excellent ball-handler and extremely quick. She makes our fast breaks go. 2) Seneca is a great defensive player. If you make a bad pass, she's gone with it. She's a great scorer. 3) Larisha is just so physically strong. She can post up anybody. We shoot very few 3s, but she's an excellent 3-point shooter."

10/13/99 - Click here to see the most updated list of players MSU is recruiting. I have heard MSU will sign from 2 to 4 players.

10/08/99 - Here is a little more info on the MSU preseason intrasquad basketball scrimmage set for Friday, October 22nd.

As part of Mississippi State's Homecoming Weekend festivities, the Bulldogs will conduct an intrasquad basketball basketball scrimmage beginning around 8:30 p.m. (following the MSU-LSU volleyball match) at the Newell-Grissom Building on the MSU campus. There is no charge for admission and an autograph session will follow the basketball scrimmage.

10/07/99 - Lanier HS basketball player Darius Rice recently visited Kentucky and has a few other visits planned. Darius is a great, great player (one of the top five forwards in the country) who, if he signs with MSU, has a chance to be one of the best players to ever suit up at MSU.

10/06/99 - Here are a few comments made by head basketball coach Rick Stansbury at the MSU Gulf Coast Boosters meeting last night:

  • The basketball team will have a practice similar to Midnight Madness in Newell-Grissom right after the volleyball game, October 22nd, which is the Friday night before the LSU game.
  • He expects former Bulldog Detrick White to land on a NBA roster somewhere.
  • Tyrone Washington will play in Europe this year, with the Houston Rockets retaining his rights.
  • Derrick Zimmerman has a chance to be outstanding.
  • Antonio Jackson can play 1 or 2, and shoots the 3 very well.
  • We'll be a transition team that runs a lot.
  • We only have one senior this year, Todd Myles.
  • Everyone is looking good in limited practices.
