Madison Central High School Football - The latest rumor is that Madison Central's outstanding senior-to-be running back, Bo Bo Brown, a player that MSU will recruit, is leaning to Ole Miss and Alabama at the moment. Of course, there is a lot of recruiting still ahead so stay tuned.....

04/26/00
Madison Central High School Football - Isn't it ironic that Madison Central High School's outstanding offensive lineman Chris Spencer, if he should decide to sign with Ole Miss next season, will have to compete for a playing position against his former teammate Doug Buckles, since he will very likely play guard in college, the same position that Doug will play.

04/26/00 - If you are joining the Bulldog Club or purchasing season tickets through a Bulldog Rep, please mail your Bulldog Club and season tickets checks and applications to the Bulldog Club mailing address that is found on the applications.

VERY IMPORTANT: This only applies to Bulldog Club and season ticket first timers who are joining the BC or buying season tickets for the first time due to a Bulldog Rep. All other folks who are renewing their season tickets should mail their info and checks to the ticket office just like they have in the past.

The Bulldog Club will personally make sure that your season ticket applications and checks are given to the ticket office. They will also make sure you get credit for joining the Bulldog Club, hence better season ticket seating. Plus, they have info they send to all new Bulldog Club members.

If the checks and applications are sent to the ticket office there is always the chance, due to the volume of mail that the ticket office will be receiving during the season ticket purchasing period, that your Bulldog Club application could get misplaced, hence you might not get your correct seating priority.

Provine (MS) HS - The word that I am hearing is Provine (Jackson, MS.) HS's outstanding senior-to-be running back Jeffery Sanders very likely will be one of the top two or three running backs in the state of Mississippi and one of the tops in the south this coming season. He is rumored to be up to 6-2, 215-lbs. and is now running the 40-yard dash in sub-4.5 seconds.

Brandon (MS) HS - I am still trying to find sources for Brandon HS's outstanding junior-to-be running back Jerious Norwood. If you are from Brandon, or the surrounding area, and have seen Jerious play, let me know what you thought of him. I have heard great things about him and would like to hear eyewitness accounts of his play.

04/24/00
Madison (MS) Central HS - The word is MSU is doing well with the Madison Central trio of OG Chris Spencer, WR Mike Espy and RB Bo Bo Brown. I have also heard that Ole Miss' signing of Madison Central HS offensive lineman Doug Buckles will have no affect on where any of the three signs. There has been speculation that OL (will most likely play guard in college) Chris Spencer would follow in the footsteps of Doug but this is, according to my sources, just a rumor.

You know about our football coaches and what they do to help maintain the success of our football program. However, there are many people who work behind the scenes in the football office that are indispensible to our coaches. These are folks that do the day to day administrative activities that our coaches count on to help them maintain the success that we, as fans, have grown used to over the past few years. There are many who help; here are three of them. Click on their name to see their pictures.
  • Administrative secretary Nedra Williams. Let me say this about Nedra, this woman knows our players, our coaches and knows the game of football. She loves MSU football and if you are sitting near her in the stands and you become negative about the team if they aren't doing so good at the moment, be prepared, because she will not tolerate you very long. Trust me, this is a woman that you don't want mad at you.
  • Student assistant Maribeth Daniel.
  • Student assistant Jessica Patrick.

04/21/00 - I need info on a player. If you know anything about Jerious Norwood, the outstanding junior to be running back from Brandon HS, please email me any info you have on him. I have heard a lot of great things about him and would like to know more.

04/18/00 - Two more high schoolers that were at Super Bulldog Weekend included MSU football signee Slovakia Griffith and junior Brookhaven high school baseball/football player Fred Perkins.

04/16/00 - I will have a few pictures of the spring game crowd and game Monday morning. My preliminary estimate of the spring football crowd is between 12,000 to 15,000. Since you had to pay to get into the game, MSU should have a more accurate count in the next day or two.

There were over 200 potential recruits and a few MSU signees at yesterday's MSU spring football game.

04/16/00 - A name to remember: William Lumpkin, 6-0, 185, 4.5, Dayton, Ohio. William is a senior-to-be cornerback/free safety who, according to my source, is the number 2 defensive secondary player in the state of Ohio. He is also considered the number 1 athlete in the state. My source also said that William is receiving letters from schools throughout his region. P.S. - He has also received a letter from our very own MSU.

04/15/00 - Gray Goodman, a 5-11, 235-lb fullback from Manchester Academy, will be walking on at State next fall.

04/14/00 - If you really want to help MSU football please be at Saturday's spring game. The strong rumor is that there will be quite a few potential recruits at the game. The more folks that are in attendance, the better MSU will look to those recruits. Remember, if you see a recruit, all you can do is say hello to him. In other words, do not give him anything but a very friendly MSU hello.

04/14/00 - An interview with MSU athletic director Larry Templeton:
GS: Super Bulldog Weekend has become a tradition at Mississippi State. How important has it become to Mississippi State sports?
Larry Templeton: I think that it has gotten bigger than Homecoming. The reason is that it happens in the springtime which gives everybody an opportunity to come back to the campus in a more relaxed atmosphere. What we were able to do this year with our schedule was to put together the best athletic competition that we have ever had in the fifteen years of Super Bulldog Weekend.

When you talk about Ole Miss in baseball, Ole Miss in men's tennis, softball with Tennessee on Friday and Kentucky on Saturday, as good a field in the Bulldogs track team relays that we have had in a number of years, the excitement of the spring game, then that is probably as good of an agenda, athletically, that we have ever had. We have been able to space those events out so, hopefully, most everybody will have an opportunity to see all of them.

We have more entries in the Pig-Cooking contest than we have ever had. If the weather cooperates, we have an opportunity to have the biggest Super Bulldog Weekend that we have ever had.

Click here for the full interview...

04/13/00 - If you are interested in attending the MSU Football Banquet tonight at Humphrey Coliseum, please contact the MSU football office at 662-325-2534 for tickets.

    04/13/00 - Spring Practice Comments, practice 14 of 15:

Yesterday's practice ran for 18 periods which is 6 less than normal. The players worked out in shorts, helmets and shoulder pads. The players were excited that spring practice is winding down. The best thing about practice was that there were no new injuries to report.

04/12/00 (11:35 a.m.) - Here is additional info on the four EMCC players that I mentioned earlier this morning. The info comes from the EMCC 1999/2000 sports yearbook.

Todd Barnette - OL, 6-1, 240, Starkville HS.
Milford Brown - Center, 6-6, 305, Montgomery (AL) HS.
Marvin Nickson - TE, 6-6, 237, Boligee (AL).
Henry Vaughn - OL, 6-0, 280, Starkville HS.

If any of you knows anything about these four athletes, please email me at swindoll@genespage.com.

    04/12/00 - Spring Practice Comments, practice 13 of 15:

  • Practice consisted of mostly repetition work. The players wore shorts and shoulder pads. There was no hitting other than a little accidental tackling.
  • The first string offensive line now consists of the following players:
    Tackle: Pork Chop Womack (senior)
    Guard: Courtney Lee (junior)
    Center: Michael Fair (senior)
    Guard: Tommy Watson (junior)
    Tackle: Kenric Fairchild (junior)
  • Yesterday's second string offensive line consisted of these players:
    Tackle: Carl Hutchins (sophomore)
    Guard: Donald Tucker (redshirt freshman)
    Center: Blake Jones (redshirt freshman)
    Guard: Kyle Wallace (sophomore)
    Tackle: Derrick Thompson (redshirt freshman)
  • Starting linebacker Barris Grant was discovered to have an ACL injury when the MSU doctor operated on him Monday. Normally it takes about four months from the time of the operation for a player to be back out on the field. In other words, Barris should be back out on the field the middle part of August. Even then, he will need to get his football legs back and see how he can cut on his rehabbed knee. The best scenario is he could be back playing when the season roles around. However, to reach this best case scenario, a lot depends on how hard Barris rehabs, how well the new tendon and connecting bones that they put in takes to his body, and how Barris handles the mental aspect of coming back from an injury. In the meantime, defensive end Rob Knight was playing the linebacker spot in Barris' absence.

There were four players from East Mississippi CC at yesterday's scrimmage. When I can find my misplaced East Miss. CC 1999/2000 yearbook, I will let you know more about them (sizes, hometowns).
    Todd Barnette - OL
    Milford Brown - OC
    Marvin Nickson - TE
    Henry Vaughn - OL

04/11/00 - Add this name as a possible MSU football recruit next year.

  • Will Prosser, 6-3, 196, 4.6, junior QB/FS, Starkville Academy. Very good student.
  • His 10th grade year (1998) he made 1-AAAA 2nd team QB. 10th grade stats: 85-145 1,024 yds. 7TD's (passing), 358 yds (rushing) 5 TD's, 1 interception return for TD (on a 4-6 team).
  • Last season, his 11th grade year, he suffered a fractured tibia in a pre-season game and missed the 1999 football season.
  • Also a very good basketball and baseball player. Started since 9th grade at SS-3B.
  • According to my source, he has received football questionnaires from several SEC schools including MSU, LSU, Arkansas, Vanderbilt as well as schools such as USM, Memphis, Navy, Stanford, the Ivy League schools and a few lesser known ones.

04/10/00 - It is rumored that Canadian quarterback Jon Hooton (6-2, 210) will walkon at State next fall. Jon's strong point is his arm strength.

    04/09/00 - Spring Practice Comments, practice 12 of 15:

  • I believe a few Hattiesburg HS players and coaches were at yesterday's scrimmage.
  • The defense looked very good during yesterday's scrimmage. The offense had a tough time scoring mostly due to the defense but partly due to the cold weather and strong wind. There was also a lot of intensity shown during yesterday's scrimmage.
  • Safety Anthony Bryant had a great scrimmage yesterday with 8 total tackles.
  • Linebackers Edward Yeates and Barris Grant had 6 tackles each. Included in those 6 tackles for Edward was a sack.
  • Defensive end Mario Haggan had 5 tackles.
  • Dog safety George White had five tackles.
  • Cornerback Eugene Liger had a very good scrimmage with 4 pass breakups as did Cornerback Shawn Byrdsong with 2 pass breakups.
  • Running backs Justin Griffith and Dicenzo Miller had several good carries yesterday.
  • The quarterbacks and wide receivers seem to be a little off yesterday due to the very cold temperatures and strong wind.
  • Wide receiver Terrell Grindle had a great catch and run play. He showed excellent speed running with the ball after his reception. I haven't mentioned him much this spring but he has been having some good practices.
  • Linebacker Barris Grant was injured during the latter part of the scrimmage but, according to preliminary reports, it does not appear to be a serious knee injury. He appeared to be hit on the reflex nerve of his knee.
  • 04/07/00 - In their final recruiting rankings, MSU was ranked 12th in the southeast (7th in the SEC) by Jeff Whitaker's Deep South Recruiting Guide and 37th in the nation by SuperPrep.

Take all of this with grain of salt. Here is what Jeff Whitaker says about recruiting ranking: "It's important to keep in mind, however, that college football coaches are the best judges of athletic potential you'll find. It is silly to suggest otherwise, although some in this business do on occasion. And with so many different opinions being proffered, remember, the only ones that count are those of the coaches of your favorite team."

04/07/00 - Here are names of several prospects and signee that have visited MSU's practices this week.

John Michael Marlin, PK, Tupelo HS. MSU signee.
Deloise Moore, RB, Gulf Coast (MS) CC.
Jason Armstead, WR/KR, Gulf Coast (MS) CC.
Brandon Roberson, Senior-to-be, QB/P, Ripley HS.
Akeem Lockett, Senior-to-be, DL/TE, Ripley HS.
Vashon Pearson, Senior-to-be, RB, Ripley HS.
Jimmy Brooks, Senior-to-be DL/FB, Ripley HS.

04/06/00 - Here are a few excerpts from a post-practice premium site interview with cornerback Fred Smoot:

GS: You are really vocal out on the field and even on the sidelines. Do you intentionally try to get the offensive players riled up with your talking?
Fred Smoot: I intentionally try and bring that flavor to practice. Once you get that flavor in place you are going to take it to the game. Then the entire team has that emotion for the opposing team.

GS: I noticed while you were vocalizing toward the offensive team, the defensive team was laughing then they were out there and hyped up as much as you were.
Fred Smoot: That's what I'm saying. That's how a team gets better. You can compare these last two days to the last two weeks and you will see what I am talking about. They were having quiet practices where they were going through the motions. Now we are getting after each other. That's what makes a championship team. If you are ready to go after each other, then you are going to be ready to go after somebody you don't know even harder.

GS: You almost have a cult following because of your sayings. Where do you come up with your sayings or "Smootisms" as they are now called.
Fred Smoot: I don't think about it because I am the type person who goes with the flow. Before the game I am going to know you and you are going to know me personally because I am going to have a conversation with you every play even while the play is not going on. I don't like to be out there bored while the crowd is loud. You can't talk to anybody but the person that is closet to you. I get a little relationship going with them and say anything that comes to me.

GS: What is your prediction for next year's MSU team?
    Fred Smoot: A National Championship!

    04/05/00 - Spring Practice Comments, practice 9 of 15:

  • Preseason Playboy All-American cornerback Fred Smoot was back at practice after missing the first eight practices with an injury.
  • Backup quarterback Brandon Butler continued to impress with his play during practice.

04/03/00 - For all of you who will be attending Super Bulldog Weekend on April 14-16, click here to see a list of things that will be going on.

04/01/00 - Ripley High School, a school that has several D-I prospects, has been looking for a new head football coach for a few weeks. The word I hear is New Albany High School head football coach Terry Allen will be Ripley's new head coach. As you may remember, Coach Allen is the father of former Mississippi State center Eric Allen and current UAB football player Tanner Allen.
