01/22/03 - Football news.

  • Peggy Sherrill, coach Jackie Sherrill's wife, left the Memphis hospital Wednesday to go back home. All tests were negative and everything appears to be great.

    Here's an update on the five former MSU assistant football coaches.

  • John Hendrick, former defensive line coach, took a head coaching position at Benedict College in South Carolina.
  • Sparky Woods, former offensive coordinator, took the tight ends coaching position at Alabama.
  • Carroll McCray, former centers/guards coach, was named the new head coach at Austin Peay State University.
  • Joe Lee Dunn, former defensive coordinator, was named the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis.
  • Craig Stump, former wide receiver coach, is considering several high school coaching opportunities in Texas.

    Recruiting news.

  • Collins (MS) High School defensive lineman Corey Clark committed to Mississippi State this past weekend.
  • Clewiston (FL) High School defensive lineman Andrew Powell committed to Mississippi State this past weekend.
  • Booker T. Washington High School (Atlanta, GA) defensive back Jeramie Johnson committed to Mississippi State yesterday.
  • Arizona Western College defensive back Jabari Smith committed to Texas Tech. He visited MSU a couple of weekends ago and had narrowed it down to MSU and Texas Tech.
  • Sapulpa (OK) High School defensive lineman Carl Pendleton committed to Oklahoma. He visited MSU this past weekend.
  • South Panola High School (Batesville, MS) athlete Rickey Wright told Gene's Page that he is now a heavy MSU lean and will make his final decision very, very soon.

    01/11/03 - Football update.

    MSU currently has between 13 and 15 players in for official visits this weekend. Included among the group are OL David Price, TE Dezmond Sherrod, DB/WR Rickey Wright, RB Brian Dennison and DL Devrick Hampton.

    Signees officially announced....

    STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill announced Friday the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play for the Bulldogs in 2003. The list includes two signees, one of whom originally signed with the Bulldogs last spring. Both will participate in spring football practice.

    David Heard, DB, 6-0, 180, Vicksburg HS.
    Chris Swain, DB, 6-0, 180, Stone Mountain, GA (Redan/Jones [Miss.] CC).

    Donald Lee to play in the East-West Shrine All-Star Game....

    STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State senior tight end Donald Lee (Pheba, Miss.) will play in the 78th annual East-West Shrine Game, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, at Pac Bell Park in San Francisco, Calif. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN and will kickoff at 1 p.m. CT.

    Lee, a 6-4, 248-pounder, is one of two tight ends on the East Squad, which will be coached by Notre Dame head coach Tyrone Willingham. The all-star classic benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children.

    Lee played in all 47 games of his MSU career, starting 31 times. He had 61 catches for 611 yards, a 10-yard average, and three touchdowns during his career. Lee made 22 receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown this past fall.

    01/09/03 - According to a source of mine, former Indianola Academy WR/DB Stephen Arant, a true freshman this past season, was recently awarded a scholarship by Coach Sherrill. Arant was moved to DE/LB during the just-completed season.
