07/31/98 - Today, look for State to receive a commitment from one of the top 15 players in Mississippi. The announcement should be in The Clarion-Ledger either today or tomorrow. I will have additional details about this commitment Sunday. This is such a big event for the small town where this commitment comes from, my source felt like the info should be announced in the newspapers first which I completely understand.

07/31/98 - Rusty Hampton, the MSU beat writer for The Clarion-Ledger, will be leaving The Clarion-Ledger August 7th to take a similar job with The Louisville (KY) Courier-Journal. Rusty will be the beat writer for Kentucky football and basketball.

Rusty gave me my first break by doing a story about me and my page. I will never forget him for that and will always consider him a friend. Good luck, Rusty. You will be missed by thousands of Bulldog fans who felt you did an excellent job covering MSU sports. For those of you who would like to thank Rusty personally, here is his email address: Rustyhamp@aol.com

07/31/98 - MSU Director of Compliance Clay Bolton is leaving the MSU Athletic Department to take a job in Student Affairs. His last day is today. I want to thank Clay for all the advice he gave me about the NCAA rules and regulations which are too complicated for a layman like me. Clay helped to keep me on the straight and narrow. For all of you who would like to express your appreciation to Clay for the outstanding job he has done, here is his email address: cbrbolt@ra.msstate.edu

07/31/98 - As promised, here is the list of Miss State walk-ons. As you read this list, remember, no program can be successful without walk-ons. They contribute in ways very few of us will ever see. These guys are a big part of the heart and soul of a team.

  • Ben Ashley - Long snapper. Returning walk-on.
  • Dorian Black - Wide Receiver. Returning walk-on.
  • Jerry Bolton - Linebacker. Incoming freshman. Has a good chance to contribute early.
  • Anthony Bryant - Defensive Back. Returning walk-on.
  • Prentiss Cole - Kicker. Returning walk-on.
  • Billy Cook - Offensive Lineman. 6-2.5, 260. Returning walk-on.

  • Scott Westerfield - Kicker. Junior walk-on from Hinds CC. Juco All-American kicker.
  • 07/31/98 - Here is a Huntsville Times article I believe you will enjoy. Go here to go to the article.

07/31/98 - For the person who asked, the junior kicker from Senatobia HS is Shae Orell. According to my source, Shae is an excellent kicker who also is on the soccer team and plays mixed doubles on the tennis team. I put this on this skuttle-butt where more people would read it.

07/30/98 - To the person who emailed me with the info that he was told by someone that Dontae Walker is GREAT, I received your email but, for some reason, I could not send a return email. We had this problem once before and it looks like it is happening again. Got any suggestions on how to correct it?

07/30/98 - Guess who will be wearing a Miss State uniform this season? None other than Emmitt Smith. No, not that Emmitt Smith. This Emmitt Smith is a very fast 5-11, 180-lb defensive back from a junior college (forgot which junior college). My source told me Smith has an excellent chance to contribute this season.

I will list all walk-ons, including ones from last year as well as new ones, on tomorrow's update.

07/30/98 - BTW, did you know Miss State will have 82 scholarship players this season?

07/30/98 - Who do you think is the most improved player on defense this year? None other than MSU's top defensive coach Joe Lee Dunn says John Hilliard is. According to my source, that is what Dunn said at the Meridian Briarwood Country Club Tuesday night.

07/30/98 - Tidbits from the SEC Media Day. Source: The Clarion-Ledger:

  • How does this incoming recruiting class compare to other classes signed by Coach Sherrill? Sherrill - "It compares with the 1977 team at Pitt that had three (NFL) first-rounders and 18 drafted overall." He went on to say that this year's class is one of the three best in his twenty-one years of coaching and is the best he has had at Miss State.
  • Justin Griffith and Julius Griffith will be allowed to take an untimed version of the ACT test due to a "learning disability" exemption. Justin will be on campus even if he does not make the required ACT score. Julius will attend a junior college if he doesn't make a qualifying score.
  • Marco Minor did not qualify and will be attending Co-Lin CC.
  • Nathan Jackson will attend MSU as a part-time student this fall and will not be placed on scholarship until January.
  • Robert Bean must pass two classes he's currently taking to graduate from Georgia Military College. Coach Sherrill expects him to be eligible this season.
  • The SEC will have a sixth bowl tie-in this season with the addition of the Music City Bowl in Nashville.
  • 07/29/98 - Is this young man going to be the dark horse of Mississippi HS football this season? Wayne County's very own Dennis Jones is a 5-11, 185-lb senior defensive back (mainly strong safety) who made over 100 tackles last year, including 11 for losses. The kid is a big-time hitter who can bench press close to 300 pounds and squat 535. He's not just a great football player as evidenced by the fact that he is a member of the Beta Club and on the Leaders of Tomorrow. Although most recruiting analysts don't know much about this youngster, the college recruiters do. So far, he has received letters from Miss State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, LSU, Auburn and Alabama.

07/28/98 - Here is what Dandy Don (LSU recruiting site maintainer) said about MSU signee Brandon Butler after seeing him in the Louisiana All-Star Game:

"One player that I was impressed with was Brandon Butler, who is a Mississippi State signee. Butler is in the mold of Daimen Craig. Butler is going to be hard to deal with the next four years."

If you would like to read the entire analysis written by Dandy Don, go here.

07/28/98 - Here's a player that is very interested in MSU:
    Latrez Harrison, QB/ATH, 6-3, 210, 4.6, Washington-Atlanta, Ga.

07/28/98 - The word is Louisville's all-everything athlete Michael Goss (a player MSU is recruiting) will be a member of The Clarion-Ledger's Dandy Dozen.

07/28/98 - Here are some rumors (I emphasize rumors) I believe you will find interesting:

  • Pascagoula HS TE/DE Casey Gilbert is very much interested in MSU.
  • MSU's main competition for Moss Point's QB Kevin Fant will be Auburn. Some recruiting experts believe Ole Miss is very much in the picture. My source believes otherwise.
  • Indianola Gentry HS athlete Milas Randle is a player MSU is supposedly very interested in. Look for Milas to be one of the surprises in Mississippi HS football this year.
  • Miss State is, supposedly, very much in the picture with Purvis' Walter Young although they probably are not the leader at this time.
  • Miss State has made major inroads into Clarksdale HS (this is not a rumor). Some recruiting experts claim the top two Clarksdale HS players Counselor and McGregory are leaning to Ole Miss. According to my sources, the recruiting experts who are saying this are definitely talking to the wrong people when it comes to what is really going on at Clarksdale HS.
  • 07/27/98 - According to one of my sources who has been around football teams for many, many years, this group of Bulldogs is as close of a group as he has been around in a long, long time. My source told me it is almost scary how hard this group has worked to improve themselves. They have built something very special which he believes will carry over to the practice field and games.

07/27/98 - I thought some of you would enjoy seeing pictures of Bulldog fans and coaches who were at the MSU Alumni Extravaganza Party, Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster golf tournament and cookout:
Coach Sherrill talking to Max Howell of Conference Call.
    Coach Sherrill signing autographs.
    Coach Sherrill signing more autographs.
A group picture of the Bulldog fans at the Extravaganza.
    Coaches Fanning and Stansbury.
    Four golfing buddies.
    Coach Bob Boyd.
Coach Glenn Davis and his golfing group.
    Coach Sherrill playing golf.
David Wilson coming off the golf course.
    Coach Melvin Smith.
The man who makes sure the golf course looks immaculate.
Coaches wives in the golf course clubhouse.
Coach Sherrill and two of his children.
Stan Black holding the first annual Keffer McGee jersey award.

07/26/98 - Here's a little more info about the Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster Club and how it was formed. In March, 1997 eight Miss State alumni (Aubrey Corley, David Holloway, Stan Black, Mark Doiron, Mike Stoddard, George Donald, Stevens Hollister and Bryan Lagg) got together and paid $100 each and formed the Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster Club. These eight alumni knew that there were over 15,000 MSU alumni in Jackson and the surrounding area and they wanted to try and get as many of them involved with MSU athletics as possible so the club was formed. With a lot of hard work and many, many phone calls, they got the membership close to 600 strong in about a year. One of the many things they have done is have a recruiting party this past football signing day. They had over 450 Bulldog fans show up. They also have had many other events such as Friday's golf tournament and cookout. Many other events are planned.

Their club is just the first of many others that will be forming in the next few months. I talked to Charlie Donald, who is one of the executive committee members of the Bulldog Club, Friday night and he told me he has contacted Bulldog fans throughout the central and southern part of the state of Mississippi about forming other clubs such as the Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster Club, although he prefers they be Bulldog Club groups. Some of the areas he expects groups to be formed in are Vicksburg, Natchez, McComb, Tupelo, the Mississippi gulf coast and other locations such as Memphis. What Charlie wants to help do is get as many of you involved in them as possible. All of these groups will help get more Bulldog fans involved in Miss State events in their local area in addition to providing financial support to the Bulldog Club which will improve Miss State's athletic department's financial condition. As these groups are formed, I will give you information about them so that you can join them.

I wish all of you could have made it to Jackson this past Thursday and Friday. The enthusiasm for MSU and MSU sports is really gathering steam in that area and with the help of Bulldog fans like Charlie Donald, Jim Dykes, Mark Mize, Terry Brown, Donny Holloway and many others, there is about to be a groundswell of Bulldog support throughout Mississippi, and, hopefully, other areas of the southeast. Be proud of your school and talk positive about Miss State. Show your support for Miss State with your enthusiasm and your checkbook and join these clubs as they are formed.

07/26/98 - MSU walk-on kicker Scott Westerfield is not the only talented football player in his family. He has a brother, Stephen Westerfield, who is a 6-0, 240-lb center on the Northwest Rankin HS football team. Stephen, who was a starter last season, will be a junior this coming year.

07/25/98 - There were over 90 golfers at the Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster Club (more on the GJBBC Sunday) Golf Tournament Friday. Almost all of the MSU football coaches were in attendance. Around 150 Bulldog fans attended the cookout later that night. The GJBBC raised over $6,500 from the auction.

Other facts heard while at the tournament and cookout:

  • In a very special ceremony, former football Bulldog Stan Black received the first annual Keffer McGee Jersey Award.
  • The Greater Jackson Bulldog Booster Club is planning on endowing a $50,000 athletic scholarship.
  • During MSU's football camp last weekend, 311 games were played. All teams played at least eight games each with the championship game participants playing 15 games (Hattiesburg (MS) defeated Barbe (LA) for the championship).
  • MSU football signee Kevin Sijansky is playing in a second all-star game. This time he is in the Texas-California All-Star Game. It is to be played tonight.
  • The rumor is Sijansky was a real fine. According to a source at the cookout, he has the intelligence and strength to play in the SEC right now. The only question is whether he has the maturity to handle the SEC noseguards. My source was very hopeful he does.
  • John Cade, the maintainer of the official MSU athletic department site, will be getting married to Vivian McKell on August 1st in Starkville.
  • Coach Sherrill emphasized very strongly to bring your cowbells to all games. Even though he realizes if it is an SEC game you can't bring them in, you can still ring them outside as much as you want to.
  • MSU football signee Shawn Byrdsong worked to help support his mother and siblings while going to high school. I was told he is a very mature young man who our coaches are very excited about. They feel he has a lot of natural ability.
  • Assistant Football Coach Bob Boyd and his wife Mary Ellen have been married 37 years.
  • Coaches Sherrill and Stansbury have a genuine respect and fondness for each. Coach Sherrill felt after Coach Williams retired there was only one choice as the new basketball coach and that choice was Rick Stansbury.
  • David Wilson left to go to Montgomery, Alabama early Friday night where he would be part of the day Saturday. He would then be traveling to Tupelo, Meridian and Pascagoula over the next few days, promoting MSU at each place. Miss State has one of the greatest public relations men and football recruiting organizers in America in David. Hopefully, the MSU athletic department powers-that-be realize this and will do everything in their power to keep this extremely talented individual.
  • 07/23/98 - Look for South Panola High School football to be very good once again this coming football season. Two reasons why are seniors Justin Pope (6-1, 230, 4.7, DL/LB) and Toriano Brown (6-2, 263, 4.7, DL/OL). Both of these young men come from good families and are good kids, according to my source. Although neither of these kids have participated in any football camps this summer, it would not surprise me one bit if they both become household names among the college coaches that will visit South Panola HS this coming football season. You don't find many players this big who run the forty in 4.7 seconds. Justin has the perfect size and speed to play linebacker in college and Toriano, with his size and speed, will make some college a great pulling guard. BTW, both have expressed an interest in unofficially visiting MSU this coming football season.

07/23/98 - How valuable is senior TE Reginald Kelly? Let's put it this way: The word is our coaches are so impressed with his great hands/speed/size combination, they are thinking about playing him at a position other than tight end on occasion so that they can get the ball in his hands more often. I realize he isn't getting much press at the moment and is a well-kept secret among the national media and the SEC media for that matter, but I can guarantee you that the NFL scouts know about Reggie and will be watching.

07/23/98 - Don't be surprised if offensive center signee Kevin Sijansky steps in as the number two center this football season. I have been told State really found a diamond in the rough in this guy.

07/23/98 - We all know wide receiver Kevin Prentiss is very fast. Guess what? MSU signee Pig Prather outran him in the forty. Look for Pig to be used where he can showcase his immense talent.

07/23/98 - The word is James Johnson is going to be a team leader this year.

07/23/98 - How hard has wide receiver Matt Butler been working this summer? There's no baby fat on this young man. He is now down to 2% body fat.

07/23/98 - Did you know coaches, staff members, faculty and even boosters and alumni can have a player at their home for an "occasional meal." What an occasional meal means, according to the NCAA, is once a month. If you are interested in having a player over, contact the football office. This is a good way for the fans and players to get to know each other. Remember, no more than once a month.

07/23/98 - Please visit my sponsor Optical 2000. Bulldog fan Boyce Craig looks forward to visiting with other Bulldog fans.

07/22/98 - MSU's Director of Compliance, Clay Bolton, is leaving the MSU Athletic Department for a great opportunity in the MSU Student Affairs Office. Although he will miss working with all of the coaches and players, Clay told me this was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. His new job allows him to get a step closer to his ultimate career goal.

I believe I speak for all Bulldog fans in saying thanks for doing such an outstanding job, Clay, and we wish you only the best. It's good to know you will remain a Bulldog, just in another capacity.

07/21/98 - Here is some info on Michael Hanley, a high school player MSU is looking at.

  • 6-0, 176, 4.5.
  • Apollo HS (Owensboro, KY.)
  • Passed ACT, working on core.

  • All-Purpose Yards: 4,373 yards, 491 attempts
  • Total Tackles: 231 (8 QB sacks)

  • Additional camp tidbits:

  • A player to watch is Starkville HS junior-to-be Jerry Fremin. Jerry is a 6-0, 238-lb TE/OL who has great hands. He benches 225 and squats 365 and is improving everyday. Has a chance to be a good one.
  • Brian Kelly is a 5-11, 175 OLB/SS senior from Kossuth HS who runs a 4.7 forty.
  • Chris Rosamond, from Weir HS, is a 5-11, 190-lb senior quarterback who is being looked at by Rice.
  • Watch out for Weir HS RB/SS Secatra Miller (no relation to Dicenzo). Miller is a 5-11, 175 senior with 4.7 speed.
  • Heritage Academy has a senior quarterback by the name of James Wamble who looked good at the camp. James is approxiamtely 6-2 with a very good arm.
  • Brice Wyatt is a player to watch. He is a 6-4, 230-lb senior tight end with 4.7 speed from Barbe HS in Lake Charles, La. He has very good hands and is a tremendous competitor.
  • Shades Valley (Ala) HS has two underclassmen who bear watching the next two year: Michael McGrew is a 6-2.5, 175-lb junior wide receiver with 4.55 speed and outstanding academics. His teammate, Tramayne Russell, is a 6-0, 180-lb junior linebacker with 4.7 speed. He also is very good academically.
  • Corey Street, a junior from George County HS, is 6-6.5 and 289 pounds.
  • Chris Brantley is a 5-11, 215-lb senior OLB with 4.7 speed in the forty. He is from Salmon HS.
  • Brett Bucher, a senior TE from Lee HS in Huntsville, Alabama, is 6-6, 239 and ran a 4.88 at the camp. His teammate, Dwone Hicks is a 5-11, 200-lb RB/DB with 4.4 speed. Both players bench over 315 and squat over 500.
  • Ripley HS's sophomore quarterback, Brandon Roberson is 5-10.5, and weighs 152-lbs. He ran his forty in 4.78. Great arm.
  • 07/20/98 Here is a little more info about the two Lee HS players. Both Brett Bucher and Dwone Hicks are being looked at by MSU. Brett has been 1st Team All-Metro and All-City the last two years. He took camp MVP at the Louisville camp last year and has camped at Georgia Tech, Alabama, Vanderbilt and, of course, Miss State this summer. He took TE MVP at the Vandy camp. Dwone, who moved to Alabama prior to last season, rushed for 1,300 yards and was Co-MVP of Huntsville along with Rashaad Moore

07/20/98 - A younster to watch the next two years is Jody Wright of Pickens Academy in Alabama. Jody, who has camped at Alabama and West Alabama this summer, is a 5-9, 175-lb junior tailback with 4.66 speed. He rushed for over 800 yards last season while averaging 6.1 yards per carry. He also won the Alabama private school state powerlifting championship for his classification, lifting a combined weight of 1,200 pounds. He benches 250+, squats 400+ and deadlifts 425+. He has very good hands and lateral quickness. He plans on attending MSU's football camp next summer and will unofficially visit MSU this coming football season.

07/19/98 - Miss State had 665 high school players, representing five states, attend their two-day football camp Friday and Saturday which was won, once again, by Hattiesburg HS. As far as I know, this is a record for players attending a single Mississippi State football camp. When you add this group of players to the group that attended the first football camp, the total number is 1,128. A total of eight states were represented. Plus, over 100 high school coaches were present at the Friday and Saturday camp alone.

Several more name players (seniors) that attended the camp are as follows (there were many more, but I'm only one person and couldn't find out who was who in a lot of cases. I will say this, there were an extraordinary amount of great looking athletes at this camp):
Allen Tillman - Quarterback, Newton HS.
Jatavious Sanders - 6-0, 195, Stone Mountain (GA) HS quarterback. Has been offered by Auburn.
Saleem Rasheed 6-3, 225, Linebacker (great student) Shades Valley (AL) HS. A member of The Birmingham News 2nd Team Super Dozen.
Chad Clemons - Offensive lineman, Philadelphia (MS) HS.
Milas Randle - 6-2, 200, quarterback, Indianola Gentry.
Dennis Alexander - 6-6, 320, offensive lineman, Westwood (TN) HS.
Javarro January - Callaway (MS) HS. Wide receiver/quarterback.

Here are some forty times to ponder (I didn't see all the forty runs so there could have been other 4.5 or faster forty times):
Greg Carter - 4.25/4.3, 5-10, 141, Natchez HS wide receiver.
    Steve Alexander - 4.4, 5-8, 150, Pearl HS.
    Justin Jenkins - 4.43, 6-0, 200, quarterback, Pearl HS.
Kenneth Ellis - 4.44, 5-11, 155, wide receiver, Columbus HS.
    Lawrence Jackson - 4.47, 5-7, 170, Pearl HS.
    Nathan McLauren - 4.47, 5-11, 195, Brandon HS
    Chris Knight - 4.5, 5-9, 145, Pearl HS.

The 4.25/4.3 forty time for Greg Carter is not a misprint. I saw him run it. Two coaches timed him for the same run and the speeds listed are their times.

Tomorrow, other players info and a list of most of the teams that were represented.

07/19/98 - The latest MSU football walk-on is Glen Thompson (OLB/SS, 6-0, 210, 4.5) from Midfield, Ala. Glen recently became eligible to sign with a D-I school. Miss State is lucky enough to be that D-I school.

07/19/98 - The latest word is there is a very, very good chance signee Robert Bean will be eligible. He will be attending Georgia Military second summer session. Look for his classes to overlap into football two-a-days. BTW, he did very well the first summer session.

07/18/98 - Miss State's football camp is going on as you read this. At least until 11:30. There are over 600 players representing five states (Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi) and between fifty and sixty high schools.

Several of the top players (seniors) that are at the camp are as follows:
Brice Wyatt - 6-4, 230, 4.7, TE from Barbe HS (Lake Charles, LA).
Corey Miley - 6-4, 260, DL, Mendenhall (MS) HS.
James Shelton - 5-8, 185, 4.3, Athlete, Northeast Lauderdale (MS) HS.
Brandon Huff - 6-1, 237, 4.7, FB, Franklin County (MS) HS.
Greg Carter - 5-10, 141, 4.25, WR, Natchez (MS) HS.
Donald Lee - 6-2, 235, 4.7, TE, Maben (MS) HS.
Keshan Fudge - 5-11, 185, 4.4, WR, Hattiesburg (MS) HS.
Jordan Pettit - 6-3, 252, 5.3, OL, Olive Branch (MS) HS.
    Nathan McLauren - 5-11, 190, 4.47, Brandon (MS) HS.

More camp info tomorrow. Loads and loads of it.

07/17/98 - I just received my issue of Larry Phipps' SEC Football magazine. There is a lot of great info in it. Here are a few tidbits to whet your appetite.

  • Rates the defenses for the upcoming season - MSU, 9th.
  • Rates the offenses for the upcoming season - MSU, 6th.
  • Rates the schedules from most difficult to easiest - MSU 12th (easiest)
  • Does a good synopsis of each team. Includes returning starters, projected starters, analysis, possible All-SEC candidates, key games, strengths, possible weaknesses, and incoming players of note (McKinley, Prather, Sears, Pressley).
  • 1997 info.
  • Spring game review.

07/17/98 Just purchased the latest issue of Lindy's 1998 Southeastern Football magazine. Here are a few tidbits.

  • Southern freshman of influence - Justin Griffith was included among the 30 mentioned. Here is what was said about Justin: "Justin Griffith is one of the country's finest backs. He is a strong runner with geat quickness, balance and excellent straight ahead speed. Griffith should be an instant star for the Bulldogs." Source: Tom Lemming/Prep Football Report.
  • James Johnson bench went from 375 to 390 and his squat max went from 435 to 540.
  • Coach Sherrill's comments about sophomore offensive lineman Floyd Womack (6-4, 351): "Unless I'm wrong, and I haven't been wrong that much, Womack will be in the next league."
  • 07/17/98 - While browsing through Lindy's, I noticed the various college football awards ranging from the Heisman (outstanding player) to the Lou Groza Award (placekicker). These are the MSU Bulldogs that I feel have a legitimate shot at the various awards:

Heisman (Outstanding College Player) - James Johnson
Outland Trophy (Interior Lineman) - Randy Thomas (6-4, 292, 4.8)
Doak Walker Award (Running Back) - James Johnson
Lou Groza Award (Placekicker) - Brian Hazelwood

07/16/98 - While at the Sanderson Rec Center the other night I had the chance to see Dicenzo Miller and Pig Prather. Dicenzo, who is 5-10, is very, very muscular as is Pig. The folks who tell you these two guys aren't big enough for SEC football are only fooling themselves.

07/16/98 - The word out in recruiting land is the second best high school tight end in the Southeast may be a player from the state of Mississippi. Maben High School's Donald Lee (6-3, 230, 4.7) is that player. Donald, who caught 54 passes for 1,015 yards last season, is being looked at by SEC schools MSU, Ole Miss, and Auburn. The word is Donald may wind up as a national recruit sometime during the recruiting process. Right now he is not known nationally, but the word is spreading. Did I mention that he dead lifts over 450 pounds, squats 455 and benches 300? That's not all. Last year was his first time out for track and what did he do at the Mississippi High School State Track Championships? He only went out and won the shot putt and took home second place in the discus. Not bad for a first-timer. Look for this kid to be a household name before too long.

07/15/98 - Greenwood HS football assistant football coach Bradley Parham has been hired by Pascagoula HS as an assistant coach. I believe Bradley is a MSU grad.

The rumor is a very well known coach from the Delta area will take over the head coaching position at Greenwood HS.

07/14/98 - One more of our football signees has been approved by the NCAA National Clearinghouse. Chris Hutchins, offensive lineman from Georgia was recently approved.

07/14/98 - A recent coaching change in Mississippi high school that could have positive significance for Miss State is the recent hiring of Terry Moore, formerly the head football coach at Greenwood (MS) HS, as am assistant coach by Moss Point HS. Miss State has, in the past several years, signed quite a few Greenwood HS players. Of course this could mean nothing but it still seems to be a significant development.

07/14/98 - One more time:There is a new SEC Football Preview publication out this year. It is called Larry Phipps' SEC Football. Check Larry's web site out by clicking here. Just looking at his web site, it looks like it has potential to be a very good publication. I have requested one myself.

07/12/98 - WCBI-TV sports reporter Chris Lattimer said on Saturday night's 10 p.m. news, that the MSU Football team's combined GPA was 2.93 for the spring semester.

07/12/98 - I noticed on the message board there was a discussion about who is the better TE, Ole Miss' Rufus French or Miss State's Reginald Kelly? I decided to call someone in the MSU athletic department and ask that person his opinion. Here is what he said:

    Pros for Kelly:
    1) Faster
    2) Has better moves after catching the ball
    3) A better blocker, although French is perceived to be the better blocker because he is bigger.

    Pros for French:
    1) Bigger
    2) In an offense that throws him the ball more often

    Even:
    1) Both have very good hands
    2) Both are coveted by the pros

My source also brought up a good point about MSU having three very good tight ends, thus limiting Kelly's playing time. He also said he feels both French and Kelly are very good tight ends, with neither one better than the other.

07/12/98 - The commiment of Miss. Delta CC defensive lineman Dorsett Davis (6-6, 315) is a big-time commitment. Davis' commitment could very well make it two years in a row that MSU has signed the top junior college defensive lineman in the country. BTW, just thought you would like to know that Alvin McKinley (last years top JC defensive lineman) now weighs 280 pounds of pure muscle.

This year, there is a lot of excitement about the potential of our defensive line, but think about the potential of next years defensive line (classification is what they will be in 1999):

Dorsett Davis (so, 4.9, potential to be top JUCO defensive lineman in 1998)
Alvin McKinley (sr, 4.75, top defensive lineman in JUCO in 1997)
Conner Stephens (so, 4.7, top defensive lineman in Miss HS last year)
Kevin Sluder (sr, 4.6 speed in the forty)
John Hilliard (sr, 4.8, top defensive lineman in Texas prior to his injury)
Ellis Wyms (jr, 4.9, tremendous quickness for a big man)
Mario Haggan (so, 4.75, big and fast player who stood out in the MS-AL All-Star game. May play LB because of his phenomenal speed for a big man)
Kenny Sears (fr or so, 4.9, Alabama defensive player of the year)
Darius Brown (sr, Clarion-Ledger Top-10 his senior year)
    Randy Stout (jr)
Garth Henry (jr, if he isn't moved to offense)
    Cornell Menafee (sr)

What sets this line apart from so many other defensive lines is their combination of size, speed and quickness. There is no doubt next years defensive line will be the fastest and deepest ever seen at MSU.

07/10/98 - Season Ticket Update: MSU has sold, when you include the students season tickets (6,000 to 7,000), about half the stadium out (20,000 to 22,000 range). Although we are running ahead of last year (slightly), we have a long way to go. If you want our stadium expanded, you are going to have to buy season tickets. It is very important that you show the athletic department there is a need for expanding the stadium. The coaches want it expanded, the athletic department wants it expanded. Now we, the MSU fans, have to show we want it expanded. Buy your season tickets now.

07/09/98 - Did you know Franklin County HS fullback Brandon Huff is a relative of former Florida State All-American quarterback Gary Huff? He sure appears to have good bloodlines.

07/09/98 - The word is Miss Delta CC defensive lineman Toby Golliday (6-3, 300) is very interested in MSU and they him. I also heard we continue to be solid, most of the time, with another Miss Delta CC defensive lineman; Dorsett Davis. The only problem with Davis is "everybody" is now interested in him. It seems everybody now realizes what I said about him out of high school: This guy is one of the top defensive linemen anywhere.

07/09/98 - Remember MSU Bulldog football star Mardye McDole? Mardye is now the head coach of Shaw HS in Mobile, Alabama. The Shaw High School Boosters are sponsoring a golf tournament called the Shaw Golf Classic. If any of you fellow Bulldog fans want to show your support to Mardye, contact Mardye or Randy Hunter. Click here for information about this golf tournament. Support Mardye. Show him Bulldog fans don't forget their own.

07/09/98 - If you live in Memphis or the surrounding area, don't forget the Memphis Maroon Club Summer Party. Dr. Portera, AD Templeton and Coach Sherrill are going to be their special guests. Check my MSU Events Page for additional details.

07/08/98 - Ok, here is my weekly academic report on our football signees. This week I list how the high school players stand in regard to the NCAA National Clearinghouse:

  • Bolton, Hall and Morgan are walk ons.

Here's the latest on the Juco signees (they only have to graduate Juco):

  • Robert Bean - Attending summer school. Has come a long way and now appears to have a very good chance of qualifying.
  • Darius Brown - Graduated
  • Kelvin Love - Graduated with a better than 3.00 average.
  • Alvin McKinley - Graduated with very good grades.
  • Bobby Pressley - Graduated and in summer school at State.
  • I know some of you are wondering about one name that you have never seen before: Mario Hall. Mario is a 5-10, 175-lb freshman-to-be running back who played football in Missouri last season. He runs the forty in the 4.4/4.5 range. He plans on walking on at MSU this coming season with the hopes of earning a scholarship. I don't know much about Mario but from what I hear he has speed to burn and is an excellent student.

07/08/98 - BTW, almost all of the present players are in summer school and lifting weights four days a week and running five. The word is they are really jelling as a unit and, according to my source, the outlook is very, very bright for this years' team if what he has seen this summer is any indication of how they will perform this coming season. The players really appear to be very dedicated in making this season a great one.

07/08/98 - I hope you guys have checked out Tuxes, Too. Where better to rent a Tuxedo than from a fellow Bulldog fan. Check out Doug's site on the internet by clicking here.

Something that surprised me yesterday was when I mentioned Tuxes, Too to a fellow Bulldog fan from the Jackson area, he told me he wasn't familiar with it. I hope to correct this very soon. The Maroon Pages are coming.

07/07/98 - Three of the better players in Mississippi are giving Miss State a serious look, according to Bulldog Bytes. The three are Moss Point HS defensive lineman Jesse Mitchell (6-3, 230, 4.8), Franklin County HS fullback Brandon Huff (6-2, 204, 4.6) and Hattiesburg wide receiver Keshan Fudge (5-11, 185, 4.4). Click here to find out how serious these three players are about MSU.

07/07/98 - A player that MSU may be showing interest in is a TE/DE from Wakulla (FLA) HS by the name of Tommy Hunter. My source wasn't sure but he thought Tommy may have received a letter from MSU. Tommy is 6-5, 220-lbs (?) and runs a 4.7-forty. He has gotten letters from many schools, including Kentucky and Central Florida (the two who are showing the most interest) as well as Auburn, FSU and others.

07/07/98 - Don't forget to visit Monroe-Tufline, which is one of my sponsors. Nobody makes a finer line of tillage and dirt working equipment than Monroe-Tufline. When you have been making products for over 40 years like they have, you know you can depend on their products. If you have any questions about Monroe-Tufline, contact MSU Bulldog fan Sid Perkins.

07/05/98 - The latest word on MSU signee Conner Stephens (6-5, 235, DE, Ackerman) is he is now benching 425 pounds. Not bad for a kid who is about two months away from his 18th birthday (8-26-80). Add a 4.7 40-speed to this and you see why he was the hottest commodity in Mississippi near the end of the recruiting period.

Bet you didn't know this. Of MSU's 25 spring signees, six are still 17 years old:
Julius Griffith, Justin Griffith, Dicenzo Miller, Kenny Sears, Conner Stephens, and Darius Tubbs. Another one, Nick Floyd, turned 18 on July 3rd.

07/03/98 - The word is juco signee Robert Bean has made up a lot of ground and has a pretty good chance of qualifying. My source said he is really focused and is working hard to become eligible.

07/03/98 - Just thought you guys would like to know what is going on in the west Tennessee area as far as Bulldog fans is concerned. The West TN. Bulldog Club is having their initial meeting July 21st. If you are interested in knowing more about it click here. Of special interest is the bus ride for the Miss State vs. Memphis game.

07/02/98 - According to a source of mine, the Mobile, Ala. alumni meeting went very well Tuesday night. Almost 80 Bulldog fans listened to MSU basketball head coach Rick Stansbury and On-Campus Recruiting Coordinator David Wilson talk about their upcoming seasons. Both coaches were very optimistic about the 1998 season. It was, according to my source, a very upbeat meeting with folks really anticipating the start of a new season.

07/02/98 - BTW, don't forget the upcoming alumni and Greater Jackson Bulldog Boosters' events coming up in Jackson on July 23rd and 24th. These two events are going to be a great deal of fun for Bulldog fans in and around Jackson. What the heck, if you can take off from work, head on down and join in the fun. Contact the Alumni Association at 601-325-2434 for the Thursday night (July 23) Alumni Summer Extravaganza and Aubry Corley about the Greater Jackson Bulldog Boosters golf tournament which is Friday (July 24) at 1 p.m.

07/01/98 - Despite what you may have heard on at least one talk show and other rumors that you may be hearing, MSU signee Justin Griffith has not fully qualified, although he is a partial qualifier. His parents are talking to the ACT to see if he can take an untimed test but, because of circumstances beyond their control, they are not having a lot of success.

07/01/98 - To all of you Bulldog fans in Memphis, don't forget the Memphis Metro Chapter MSU Alumni Association is having it's summer party July 9th. Contact Robert Hubbard at (901) 763-0482 or thhubs@aol.com or you can call RSVP (901) 757-7454. It sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun, so don't miss it.
