08/31/99 - Here are a couple of excerpts from my position by position analysis which is presently being done on my premium site.

Running Backs: Behind Rainey and Miller will be true freshman Dontae Walker (5-10, 225, 4.5 forty), the consensus top prep running back in the nation last year. The much-ballyhooed Walker has battled a couple of injuries during the fall practices, which has hindered his ability to completely learn the offensive system. As of Monday, he was about 95% healthy but should be 100% by the first game. Look for Dontae, when he completely heals, to be a force in the backfield. Based on my personal practice observations, he has a knack for finding and getting through any hole that is available, has shown excellent speed and has very good strength (ran over MSU safety Pig Prather during one scrimmage, which is not an easy thing to do). According to Coach Davis, Dontae "is everything we expected he would be. In fact, he has been a little better at pass-blocking than we expected. He didn't have to do that in high school. But he has done a great job of it so far."

Defensive Ends: Graduate assistant coach Kurt Woerner (coaches MSU's defensive ends) had this to say about Bobby Pressley (will be one of two DE starters): Bobby "is a little more unorthodox. Great pass-rusher. Great off the start. He is going to be a big player for us. Hopefully, he is going to be the Ed Smith of this year's team. He has put a lot more into the mental preparation of our defense. He struggled last year, coming out of junior college, learning his assignments. During the spring and summer he worked very hard. He took a lot of pride in trying to learn our system. He knows the game much better now."

08/31/99 - The Huntsville Times' list of top 20 football players in Alabama included three players that are considering Mississippi State:

#11) Anthony Bryant - Sunshine HS. OL, 6-4, 312. Schools: Aub, Ala, Fla, FSU, Kent, MSU, Tenn.
#19) Andy Galloway - Dothan HS. OL, 6-5, 285. Schools: Ala, Fla, NC St., Aub, MSU.
#20) Trey Ward - Hartselle HS. RB, 6-0, 190. Schools: So. Car., Tenn, Aub, Ga, MSU.

08/30/99 - Here is a very nice article by The Clarion-Ledger's Sekou Smith:

If the luxury of your locker room has any connection with the mood of a football team's demeanor prior to kickoff, Mississippi State's Bulldogs will rest like royalty before game time.

In fact, State's coaches might have to chase the players out of the comfort of their new digs, which is complete with brand new everything and a recruiting lounge upstairs from the home locker room.

The Bulldogs' locker room renovation project is scheduled to be completed in time for Saturday's season opener against Middle Tennessee State.

The new and improved locker room, located in the Frank Turner Field House below the Leo Seal M Club Center in the south end zone of Scott Field, looks more like the Ritz Carlton than a place for dirty towels and smelly cleats.

"Man, I can't believe it's this nice," State senior defensive end Cornell Menafee said as he cut corners in the facility last Thursday night.

The locker room had its first visitors last Thursday night for the Shannon-Taylorsville high school game.

One observer commented that the furniture in the locker room was nicer than anything he'd ever had in his home.

"It's the best locker room facility in the country," State coach Jackie Sherrill said. "Without a doubt."

08/29/99 - There were between 750 to 1,000 Bulldog fans at Fan Day yesterday. I will have pictures late this afternoon or early evening.

08/28/99 - Don't forget, today is Fan Day. You can meet all of the players beginning at 5 p.m. at Scott Field.

Also, for you Bulldog Club members, today is the annual Bulldog Club meeting. It will be at the Leo Seal Building beginning at 3:30 p.m.

08/27/99 (3:15 p.m.) - I just checked my message board. It seems I have stirred up a little bit of a hornets nest by asking folks to reframe from posting rumors on my message board. When I posted that request, I should have written malicious rumors, not rumors. My wording was incorrect. Anyone with a any kind of common sense should understand what the difference is between malicious rumors and your everyday common rumors. A malicious rumor has the potential to hurt someone's reputation and effect their life. A common everyday rumor doesn't.

08/27/99 - I went to practice yesterday. Dorsett Davis was practicing full speed. His wrist injury doesn't seem to bothering him.

08/27/99 - Today's football scrimmage is CLOSED to the public. Please don't attempt to attend it.

08/27/99 - Advertisement: If you are looking for equipment to work in the garden or on the farm, look no farther than Monroe-Tufline, a Mississippi-owned and operated company located in Columbus, MS.

08/26/99 (12:35 p.m.) - I have three folks that I either can't find usernames for or their emails don't work. If you have recently mailed in your check and you haven't received an email from me saying that you have been added to my premium site, please email me.

08/26/99 (10:35 a.m.) - Folks, please do not post rumors that you see on other message boards without contacting me first. There was a rumor on my message board this morning about two MSU football players beating up an MSU female track athlete. I just got off the phone with Mike Nemeth, of the MSU Media Relations Department, who told me this is absolutely false. He was contacted by MSU track coach Al Schmidt who told him he had heard this rumor and he wanted Mike to know that it is not true.

It really bothers me MSU fans would post rumors like this. Think before you post on my message board. Anybody can post anything on most message boards. As you should know by now, a lot of folks just flat out lie. Remember the Coach Sherrill is resigning rumor that was spread on the Rebel Vent? It turned out to be a lie.

08/26/99 - During practice yesterday, DT Dorsett Davis received a minor wrist injury. It is not, according to my source, that significant of an injury. LB Jamal Dinkins was also injured during the practice. His was a jaw injury. Not sure at this time if it is a broken jaw or something less severe.

08/25/99 (10:40 a.m.) - Just wanted to let all of you in the Baton Rouge area know that the Baton Rouge MSU Alumni Association will be having a chapter revitalization meeting Monday, August 30, at Ninfa's in Baton Rouge. The meeting will start at 6:30, and dinner will be $15 a person. If anyone has questions, they can call Sophie Hudson at home at 225-927-1540.

08/25/99 - During practice yesterday, freshman running back Dontae Walker practiced, although he continues to limp a little. He is continuing to improve. Senior offensive lineman Wes Shivers, although he now has a very small brace on his leg, practiced in all the drills.

A few other players have minor injuries, but none are serious enough to warrant missing the first game, which the coaches started preparing the team for in yesterday's practice.

Running backs Dicenzo Miller and Chris Rainey continue to play with great effort, as did fullback/running back combo Justin Griffith. For the most part, the defense continues to look very good during practice.

08/25/99 - Here is an excellent Starkville Daily News article about walk-on deep snapper Michael Bender.

08/24/99 - MSU football pre-season prediction from the West Point Daily Journal site:

Bulldogs want to repeat in the wild West

By MARK BEASON/©Daily Times Leader

Getting to the top isn't as hard as staying there. The adage may hold true for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who are looking to repeat as SEC Western Division champions. State has key positions to fill if they expect to make a return trip to Atlanta for the title game.

The offensive line is depleted, and somebody will have to step in at running back if the Bulldogs plan on bringing home the hardware in 1999..... (complete story)

08/24/99 - A Dorsett Davis article found in the Tupelo Daily Journal.

Davis ready to prove he's Division 1 material

By Parrish Alford, The Tupelo Daily Journal

Dorsett Davis is mad, and somebody's going to pay. Actually, Davis has no one to blame but himself for the source of his frustration.

An angry Davis brings about increased aggressiveness, and that's something MSU defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn is happy to see from his 6-foot-6, 303-pound defensive lineman. "Dorsett will definitely help us," Dunn said. "He had a great spring because he hustles and plays hard. And that's rare for a junior college guy. Usually it's like pulling teeth to get them to hustle and play hard."

A confused recruit out of Cleveland East Side two years ago, Davis, academically ineligible, signed letters of intent with two junior colleges – Mississippi Delta and Hutchinson, Kan...... (complete story)

08/24/99 - While at practice yesterday, I got the chance to chat with injured Bulldog player Kendall Roberson. Kendall is planning on graduating in December and hopes to find a coaching job. If any of you know of a coaching position available, let me know about it. Kendall, after he receives his certificate, will be able to teach Physical Education and Health. He really appears to be a very nice young man and I'm sure would do a fine job for anyone.

08/24/99 - This Friday's scrimmage is closed to to the public according to the football office.

08/24/99 - Freshman running back Dontae Walker and senior offensive lineman Wes Shivers both practiced Monday.

08/24/99 - Mike Pierce, president of the Clay County Bulldog Club, has sent a letter to Clay County members inviting them to a gathering Wednesday evening. The letter that went out last week reads, in part:

"You are invited to kick off the upcoming football season with Coach Sherrill and all the Mississippi State coaches on August 25th at Waverly Waters. A social hour will begin at 6:30 and the coaches will arrive at 7:30.

Coach Sherrill is providing various items of Mississippi State memorabilia to auction off to raise money to assist in providing amenities for the new locker room. With your help this facility will be something everyone will be proud of."

According to the email I received, all of you who are Bulldog Club members (doesn't matter what county you are from) are invited to the gathering.

08/22/99 - After yesterday's scrimmage, I had the chance to talk to MSU tight end coach David Wilson about how Maben freshman tight end Donald Lee has done up to now. I also talked to MSU running back coach Glenn Davis about Clinton freshman running back Dontae Walker. Here is what they said.

How has Donald Lee progressed during the early practices?
Coach Wilson: The biggest thing he has done is he has learned the intensity of the game on this level. And that is the first step to being able to play in the SEC. Plus, he is very naturally strong and very fast. All he needs to work on is his assignments. I think he is a guy who can give us depth at the tight end position. He will grow and learn and become a good player.

Do you expect him to play during games this coming season?
Coach Wilson: I expect him to play on specialty teams. He can become a big part of that. If we get into a position where he is really sure of himself playing, then I think you might see him some (at the tight end position).

Has he surprised you with his athletic ability?
Coach Wilson: No, I knew about Donald ever since he came to our camps. I knew about his athletic ability, speed and strength. He's a guy who loves the game, loves to practice, loves to workout and loves to study. If he continues to take that approach his entire career, he will be a fine player.

How has Dontae Walker progressed during two-a-days?
Coach Davis: Dontae is doing very good so far. He is banged up right now (bruised leg). He has done a lot of good things that you wonder if a freshman will be able to do. His blocking and pass-protection skills have been a very pleasant surprise. He has not been intimidated by anybody and he is very confident in what he does. That is one of the top things he has going for him, along with his natural ability.

From what you have just said, he seems to be picking up his blocking assignments very well. Does that surprise you?
Coach Davis: No it doesn't, because he is very intelligent. He has also done extremely well running the ball in the inside drills. He has been everything we expected. Right now, he is like all freshmen; he is a little confused about some things, but, hopefully, during the next two weeks we will be able to iron those things out and he can get there and turn it lose without thinking about what he has to do.

BTW, for those of you who have heard that Dontae is injured; his injury is a minor bruised leg. I was told by one of MSU's team doctors, who was at the scrimmage yesterday, that Dontae is fine and should be able to practice Monday.

Offensive lineman Wes Shivers injured his leg yesterday during the scrimmage but preliminary reports were that he would be able to practice Monday. I talked to one of the team doctor's and he felt his injury was not serious.

08/22/99 - The rumor is the game time for the September 25 MSU/South Carolina game will be moved to either 2:30 or 11:30 am to accommodate ESPN/Direct TV Gameplan. This game will most likely be moved to JP as a split regional telecast at 11:30 CST. There is another network that may pick this up for the 2:30 CST time slot but it is rumored that it will be televised by one of the two.

08/22/99 - Advertisement: You heard it here first. The Starkville Quarterback Club has added two new speakers to their list. Former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown and former Auburn football coach Pat Dye. Dale Brown is considered an outstanding speaker who I'm sure all of you will have a lot of fun listening to. Plus, if you guys want to know what really is going on at Auburn these days, then Pat is your man. He knows and he can talk about it. Here is a link to the Starkville Quarterback Club. Give them an email soon. Better yet, fill out the application form found on their page and mail it in. They are really going all out for MSU fans in all of the surrounding counties.

08/20/99 - According to a source of mine, Pillow Academy's outstanding kicker, Jonathan Nichols, who unofficially visited State this past weekend, is going to unofficially visit Ole Miss this weekend.

My source also told me that Lee Academy's Sparky Luster, despite a hurt shoulder, had an outstanding jamboree at Starkville Academy last night.

08/19/99 - Practice Info and an Ernest Garner update:

I talked to MSU linebacker coach Jim Tompkins prior to practice about former MSU football player Ernest Garner. He said he and coaches Jackie Sherrill, Melvin Smith, team physician Bob Collins visited Ernest in the hospital at Gainesville, Fla. about a month ago. He said it was a very emotional visit. Ernest could not open his eyes to see them but did know they were there and was able to communicate by writing on a board. Jim said there were several times when he saw a tear roll down Ernest's face. Ernest wanted them to know he really appreciated them and his former teammates. Jim wasn't sure what the future holds for Ernest.

Comments by Coach Sherrill:

  • Kicking Game: I feel very comfortable with Westerfield and Walker. I feel the kicking game will be where we were last year.
  • Quarterbacks: We didn't put Wyatt or Morgan in because it would have taken snaps away from Butler and Fant. And we needed to see them perform. Kevin (Fant) did some good things today. We really wanted to get him under fire.
  • Scrimmage 1 against 1: He likes to scrimmage the number one defense against the number one offense. Going against the likes of Dorsett Davis and Kevin Sluder is quite a bit different than going against a third-teamer.
  • Freshmen Running Backs Griffith and Walker: They are two young running backs who are going to be really good. The running back position will be fine.

08/18/99 - A couple of starting offensive linemen looked very good yesterday. Michael Fair and Paul Mooney had two great practices. Overall, the first unit offensive line looked very good.

08/18/99 - Received this info from a source of mine: Starkville Academy will host Lee Academy, Pillow Academy and Washington School Thursday, August 19th in Starkville. Lee's Sparky Luster FB/LB, 6-3, 220, 4.6 (MSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Arkansas, Navy, Southern Miss); Pillow's Jonathan Nichols QB/KICKER, 6-1, 160 (MSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Southern Miss, South Carolina and others) and Josh Whelan FB/LB, 6-2, 220, 4.7 (MSU, Ole Miss, Auburn); Washington's Adam Sykes QB, 6-1, 185, 4.6, will be there along with others. Each team will play two 15 minute quarters.

08/16/99 - Clarification: A couple of weeks ago I posted that MSU football signee Fred Smoot signed with Ole Miss out of high school. A Rebel fan contacted me by email and told me that my info was incorrect. I told him I would look into it and post the correct info on my page. I since have found out that Fred did not sign with Ole Miss but did commit to them out of high school. Due to his academics, Fred eventually wound up at Hinds CC and, as we know, eventually signed with MSU.

08/16/99 - Click here to read a FOX Sports article by Sekou Smith.

08/16/99 - Here is an excerpt from Rob Haralson's Gene's Page premium site recruiting column:

When most people analyze a school's recruiting class they focus on the skilled positions, because they are the people who score the points and make all of the exciting plays. People tend to forget that most games are won in the trenches, and those exciting players would not be quite as exciting without a group of huge guys protecting them. They also overlook the fact that some players might be even better without having 3 defensive linemen in the backfield before they even receive the ball.

This article is devoted to some of the guys who play the non-glamor positions that help make the team a better overall team.

    1. Doug Buckles (6-6, 265-lbs., 5.1) from Madison Central High (MS) is one of the top if not THE top player in Mississippi. He camped at Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Nicholls State this summer. He plans to visit LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Florida. Buckles' good friend and son of his high school coach, Ben Justice, recently walked on at Mississippi State and this could help in his decision process. The Bulldogs appear to be the clear leader.

    2. Anthony Bryant (6-3 ˝, 324-lbs., 4.83, 28-inch vertical) from Sunshine High School in Newbern is the top defensive lineman in the state of Alabama and possibly the top overall prospect. He bench presses 360 pounds, squats 650 pounds and power cleans 305 pounds. As a junior he amassed 86 tackles and 13 sacks. During the Spring evaluation period, Bryant received contact from a host of colleges including Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, South Carolina and Mississippi State. Bryant attended a combine in Montgomery and camped at Mississippi State, Alabama, and Auburn this summer. He has received scholarship offers from Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi State.

08/16/99 - Petal (MS) HS has a tight end that bears watching this coming season. Joey Perot is a 6-3, 255, tight end with 4.80 speed. Joey, who has heard from Texas A&M, Kentucky, LSU, Alabama, State, Ole Miss, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Northwestern and Southern Miss to name a few, benches 365 pounds and squats 515 pounds. He was awarded the MVP for the tight end position at the Southern Miss camp this past summer.

08/14/99 - While at football practice Saturday, August 14th, I noticed Dr. Portera talking to the football players. After he talked to them, I asked him if he would mind allowing me to do a short interview with him. Here is the interview.

Dr. Portera, the football team started practice today at 7:30 a.m. and shortly after practice began you talked with the team for a few minutes. What did you talk to them about?
Dr. Portera: We are very supportive of this football team and this coaching staff. Since I have been here, they have done everything I have asked them to do. We are trying to raise the bar at Mississippi State and there is no place that demonstrates that to the public more than the athletic program. And I thought it was important to come out here and tell these players that the bar is going up here. We continue to tell everyone that. We work with a set of goals that we have set for the university. We have daily goals that we are trying to accomplish. We wanted to tell them that and let them know that they are a very important part of that. They are sort of the window to the university now. They can send a great message to the state. The message we want them to send is that we expect to win when we walk into the classroom, laboratory or even onto the football field. We are going to do it with class but we expect to win. The second thing I wanted to do is welcome the new guys to Mississippi State. We have a great recruiting class this year. All good young men who decided to come to the university. I also wanted to express our appreciation to all of the guys who have come back to help begin to establish an important tradition at State of winning and expecting to win when you walk into the stadium.

We are making some improvements here that I know you know about that reflects our commitment to that. We want it be a first class place and we want our people to understand that.

The administration, coaches and players have made a strong commitment to MSU football as shown by their accomplishments last football season. What would you like to say to the fans about making a commitment to MSU football?
Dr. Portera: I would say three things. One, they need to get to know us better. I don't mean just mean myself but all of these players and coaching staff. They need to understand the commitment that is here. And the commitment is to win but win with class. The second thing is to develop a mindset that we are going to win when we go into the stadium. And that we expect to win when we go into the fourth quarter maybe down seven points. The third thing, and this is very important, is to support the program by buying season tickets and come to the football game. Buying season tickets is so important. The second part of this is we are about to expand this stadium and we need these folks to buy chairback seats in the clubhouse level. And for those folks who have the financial capability to buy one of the skyboxes we are going to have in the stadium.

These guys, since I have been here, have demonstrated that they are committed to winning. They are going to need the alumni to be a partner in that commitment.

You worked at the University of Alabama for quite a few years. How would you compare the MSU program to Alabama's program, which is considered one of the leading programs in the country?
Dr. Portera: This program does more with fewer resources than any other program in the country. In fact, you've heard me say this before, but I believe we are one of only two programs in the SEC which has been to the Final Four, the SEC Championship football game, and the College World Series in the 1990's. Just the other day I told someone that we work harder and smarter with the resources that we have that any other program in the country.

The other thing I would say is that with the tradition of Alabama, with Wallace Wade and Coach Bryant, they have a long tradition of winning there. And that impacts their tradition of being successful. And that is what we are building here with Jackie Sherrill. It's a very exciting time to be here at this university.

08/13/99 - Here is an excerpt from my premium page interview with MSU DL coach John Hendrick:

Coach John Hendrick talking about his players:

Kevin Sluder, Senior: Kevin started playing games as a redshirt freshman. Kevin is a gem. I probably have a better relationship with him than any player I have ever coached. I love the kid. His work ethic is outstanding. He is an excellent leader. He is probably the leader of the defensive line. He sets the tone for the other players. People don't realize that Kevin led all defensive lineman in the SEC in tackles last year. There's more people who get more publicity, but I wouldn't trade him for anybody.

John Hilliard, Senior: John has been a steady player for us. I'm really looking for John to have a tremendous year for us this coming season. Even though as a team we played poorly in the Cotton Bowl, John played a tremendous game. You have to see the tape to see how well he played in that game. To get to the level we want to this year, he will have to play that well in every game. I'm looking for a big year from him.

Alvin McKinley Senior: I'm looking for a breakout year for Alvin. When Alvin first got here, I had intentions of playing him at noseguard. But because of circumstances, I didn't put him there last year. Then, in the spring, we moved him to noseguard and he started making plays. He really had a good spring. He was like a fish out of water until we moved him to noseguard. I'm really excited about the prospects of what he can do for us playing at noseguard.

Ellis Wyms, Junior: Ellis is an extremely talented young man who has been playing since his redshirt freshman year. Ellis has been a little sporadic performance-wise, but ability-wise he is as good as anybody we have. I'm looking for him to have a great year. Ellis has matured. When a player matures, you see it in everything they do. For instance, Ellis was on the Dean's List his last semester. He is showing more confidence. Ellis's potential is unlimited.

Dorsett Davis, Sophomore: How many guys are that big, that fast and that strong? He has unlimited potential. I'm looking for him to make plays and do big things for us this year. As good as he is now, Dorsett's best football is ahead of him. His upside is large if he plays hard and stays healthy. The sky's the limit for the young man.

Toby Golliday, Junior: He is a playmaker. I'm looking for him to make plays. Toby's got a nose for the football. He is like a linebacker playing noseguard. He has great instincts.

Willie Blade, Junior: Athletic, athletic. He's as quick as Kenwoynne Smith (former MSU NG) but Willie is four inches taller and fifty pounds heavier. We are going to start him out at noseguard but he can always move out to tackle.

Ed Yeates, Senior: Ed is a good football player. He's got some things to learn as a noseguard but he's a good tackler and a wild man on the field.

Darius Brown, Senior: He is very quick and a great pass-rushing talent. I would like to see him play more physical. Right now, he is more of a finesse player.

Keith Adams, Senior: Keith is a walk-on who has worked very hard and has some things that really help this football team. He is a great kid and student who is majoring in agricultural engineering and who is about to graduate in May.

08/11/99 - The word I'm hearing is MSU's defensive line is so talented, the coaches may alternate the 1st and 2nd lines throughout the game. I was also told that Kenzaki Jones will really push sophomore Pig Prather for the safety position. Look for this to make both better.

08/11/99 - Derrick Thompson and Toby Golliday have arrived and will begin practicing.

08/10/99 - The latest word is MSU signee Toby Golliday is waiting to hear how he did on two academic tests. My source was told Toby should be fine.

The latest rumor is MSU signee Dwayne Robertson will be moved to defensive end similar to where Ed Smith played last season.

  • 08/08/99 - Athens (AL) HS has a wide receiver by the name of Von Webb that MSU may be looking at. Von, who is 6-0, 175 and runs a 10.74 100 meters, lists Vandey, NC State, North Carolina and MSU as his early favorites, according to the Decatur Daily.

According to a source of mine, another player MSU has shown interest in is Carl Higgins, a 6-5, 285-lb offensive lineman from St. Benedict (Memphis, TN). Carl, who runs a 5.2 forty, has received interest from other schools such as Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Memphis and UAB.

08/05/99 (7:35 p.m.) - Clarification: MSU football signee Corey Miley will be in Starkville this fall and a student at MSU.

08/05/99 - According to a source of mine, there were approximately 50 MSU fans in attendance at the newly formed MSU booster club on the Gulf Coast. Several MSU coaches were there.

    Comments made by the coaches:

  • OL Coach Jerry Fremin: The offensive line will be good one deep. We will need some of the younger guys to step up to provide the needed depth.
  • Asst. Head Coach / LB Coach Jim Tompkins: Barrin Simpson is back 100%. We have great depth and quality at the DL. And our secondary could be the best in the SEC. Pig Prather is going to be an impact player at Safety. He's a hard hitter with great speed.
  • RC / TE Coach Dave Wilson: McCaskey is a great player. He can block well and catch the ball. After McCaskey, we'll have several young guys who we'll need to step up. C.J. Sirmones, Ivan Billie and Aaron Lumpkin all will be in the mix, along with some others.

  • 08/03/99 (12:10 p.m.) - For those of you who asked about Corey Miley and Milas Randle, two of MSU's signees, here is their eligibility status. Milas will report with the other incoming signees Friday and be on the roster this year. Corey, who has been cleared academically by the NCAA, was injured during the MS/AL All-Star game and will be a Bulldog. His situation is similar to MSU signee Nathan Jackson's situation last year when he was injured during the same all-star game. He, his family and MSU are discussing his options. As I receive additional details on Corey, I will post them on my skuttle-butt.

08/03/99 - Premium Site Update: I interviewed MSU AD Larry Templeton yesterday. I will be interviewing quite a few of the head coaches Wednesday. Thursday, I will interview several of our assistant football coaches. I also plan on going to all of the football practices that take place this weekend. Look for all of this on my premium page next Monday. Here's a teaser from the Larry Templeton interview. The MSU athletic department has several facility additions on their agenda for the next few years. Included in those additions are "lights for the soccer field"......"add different lights to the football practice fields"......."build a new indoor workout area for seventeen sports.......it would have twice as much surface area to practice on as the Shira Field House"......"add a parking lot on the west side of Humphrey Coliseum to accommodate baseball and basketball."

    P. S. - Before you ask, the indoor workout area would be IN ADDITION to the Shira Field House, which would continue to be used.

As Larry mentioned to me, you always have to plan for the future. The items mentioned above are things he would like to see built in the next few years if the money can be found.

08/03/99 - Advertisement: You heard it here first.

08/02/99 - I've heard a rumor from two reliable sources that MSU football players James White, a WR from New Orleans, and Kenny Sears, a defensive lineman from Montgomery, AL., will be transferring to other schools. The word is Kenny, along with his brother (not sure of his name) who played at Southern Miss last year, will be transferring to Troy State. My sources weren't sure where James is transferring.

Folks, now that I am doing my page full-time, the bar has just been raised. I will continue to provide you with the early morning daily updates, but I will also, as I check my emails and find the time each day, add an additional update or two. Check back when you can.

08/01/99 - I heard a strong rumor, from a very reliable source, that the late Dub Garrett, a former MSU football player and pro player (Chicago Bears), will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame later this year. Mr. Garrett, who played at State from 1944 to 1947, was All-SEC all four years that he played at State and was a 2nd round draft pick of the Bears.
