7/14/00 - Mississippi State's Elisha Williams and Rod Newton will both vie for Olympic track and field team spots when they compete at this weekend's U.S. Olympic Trials.
Newton will compete in the high jump, while Williams, a senior-to-be for the Lady Bulldogs, will take part in the women's long jump event at the meet held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of California State University-Sacramento.
Newton earned the chance to compete in the trials with the school record 7-4 1/2 mark he leaped to win the 2000 SEC outdoor high jump championship and qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Crossett, Ark., native finished 11th at the NCAA meet with a 7-0 1/2 effort.
Williams, a Milton, Fla., native, leaped a school record 20-11 1/4 in a first-place showing at the 1999 Bulldog Invitational to secure a spot in a field that includes international superstar Marion Jones and six other competitors from the SEC.
Williams kicks off competition against the nation's best 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Newton begins high jump action a week later, July 21.

Women's Tennis - Mississippi State University head women's tennis coach Tracy Lane has recommended to MSU Director of Athletics Larry Templeton the hiring of Michael Metz as assistant women's tennis coach at MSU. The hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Trustees,
Institutions of Higher Learning.
Metz, becomes MSU's second, full-time assistant for women's tennis, taking over for Cristina Badea who resigned to pursue another career. He enters the position after having served as a volunteer assistant to State's men's team this past season.
A native of Clewiston, Florida, Metz was a four-year (1995-98) letterman for the Bulldogs and a member of four State squads that reached the NCAA quarterfinals (semis in 1998). During that 1998 run to the national semifinals, Metz earned his placed in the MSU lineup after four years of dedication, teaming with Jeremy Bayon in doubles for a perfect 3-0 mark, including a win over Stanford's #3 doubles team.
"We are extremely excited to have Michael become our assistant coach," Lane said. "He has been associated with MSU tennis since 1994 and certainly has experience in regards to our winning tradition. He has a tremendous amount of determination and his knowledge of the game will make him an excellent coach."

7/03/00 - Former MSU golfer , Doug Barron, finished fifth yesterday in the Greater Hartford Canon Open. Doug is a native Memphian and a great representative of MSU.
