06/26/01 (4:15 p.m.) - Mississippi State men's tennis standout Marco Baron has been named to the 2001 Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team, released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The team, comprised of 22 men's and women's collegiate tennis players nationwide who excelled during the 2000-01 season, will be honored in New York in late August by Rolex and Tennis Magazine.
Baron, one of three NCAA Division I singles players named to the squad, just completed his outstanding career with the Bulldog netters.
A three-time, all-American, Baron came in as the nation's top-ranked singles player to end the 2001 season, making him the sixth Bulldog ever to hold a No. 1 national ranking. The 2001 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, he compiled 82-28 singles and 66-30 doubles overall records as a Bulldog, garnering all-America and first-team, all-SEC honors three years each. He went 23-5 overall in singles this year, including triumphs in 21 of his last 23 matches, and 20-9 in doubles, where he ended 14th in the country with Chris McDonald.
Baron was also named this year's Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award winner on the national level, annually presented to the collegiate player who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics, and has also had outstanding tennis playing accomplishments. Named first-team Verizon Academic all-America earlier this month, he holds a 3.91 grade point average in international business.
Baron becomes the fifth Bulldog ever to be named to the Rolex team, which is in its 18th year of existence. All-Americans Daniel Courcol and Laurent Miquelard made the team in doubles in 1993 after winning the Rolex National Indoor Championship. Miquelard joined Joc Simmons on the squad a year later when the pair captured the NCAA doubles crown. State's only other player to make the team in singles was three-time, all-American Thomas Dupre' in 1997, when he was also named Tennis Magazine National Player of the Year.

Track and Field - Mississippi State's Elisha Williams and Camille Harper capped one of the finest track and field seasons in school history by earning all-America honors at last weekend's NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The Lady Bulldogs received strong showings from Elisha Williams in the long jump and Camille Harper in the 100-meter dash to tie for 40th place, the fourth highest team showing in MSU women's track history.
"We are really pleased with the performances Camille (Harper) and Elisha (Williams) gave us," Schmidt said. "It was a good weekend for us. We were the sixth-best SEC team at the championships, and that is a very good accomplishment."
Williams took fifth place in the long jump at Hayward Field to become the first Lady Bulldog to earn all-America status both indoors and outdoors. The Milton, Fla., native took second place at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this season to claim the Lady Bulldogs' first indoor all-America accolades.
Harper acquired the first all-America honors of her career with an eighth-place showing in the 100m last weekend at the Oregon-hosted meet. The Clinton, Miss., native combined with Williams to give State's women two all-Americans in the same season for the first time in school history.

Harper ran an 11.57 mark to take her place among the nation's best collegiate sprinters after taking third in her semifinal heat Friday night to advance to Saturday's race.
The eighth-place showing at the University of Oregon-hosted national championship meet capped a stellar 2001 season for the Clinton, Miss., native that included breaking Falilatu Ogunkoya's 13-year old 100m school record with an 11.38 mark at the Texas Relays.

Men's Tennis - Mississippi State's men's tennis team finished the 2000-01 season ranked 14th nationally in the final WingspanBank.com Collegiate Rankings, released Friday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In addition to the team rank, three Bulldogs and two doubles teams earned individual rankings, including senior Marco Baron, who ended the year ranked No. 1 in the country in singles.
State's No. 14 team ranking marks the 13th-straight season the Bulldogs have finished in the top 25 nationally. MSU is one of only eight schools (Georgia, LSU, MSU, Pepperdine, Southern Cal, Stanford, Texas, UCLA) in the country to have accomplished that feat. State, which finished 14-11 overall, advanced to the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" this year for the 10th time in 11 years and is one of only five schools (Georgia, LSU, MSU, Stanford, UCLA) to have done so.
Three Bulldogs ended the year in the top 60 nationally in the individual singles rankings.
Baron came in as the nation's top-ranked player in Friday's final poll, making him the sixth Bulldog ever to hold a No. 1 national ranking. He joins former MSU all-Americans Daniel Courcol, Thomas Dupre', Laurent Miquelard, Laurent Orsini and Joc Simmons in that category.
The 2001 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, Baron compiled 82-28 singles and 66-30 doubles overall records as a Bulldog, garnering all-America and first-team, all-SEC honors three years each. He had the best year of his career this season, going 23-5 overall in singles, including triumphs in 21 of his last 23 matches, and 20-9 in doubles. An Academic all-American, Baron was also named this year's Rafael Osuna Sportmanship Award winner on the national level, annually presented to the collegiate player who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics, and has also had outstanding tennis playing accomplishments.
True freshman Romain Ambert came in ranked 33rd in the country Friday after an outstanding initial season on the collegiate level. The Toulouse, France, native went 27-11 this year in singles and was named ITA Region III's Player to Watch. Also a first-team, all-SEC selection, Ambert was ranked as high as sixth nationally, mainly due to an impressive fall semester. His ranking was limited this spring when he broke his ankle in late March and missed six weeks of competition. He returned in time to compete in the NCAA Team and Singles Championships.
Sophomore Rene'-Charles Combette is ranked 59th nationally in Friday's final poll. The Corsica, France, product started the year with an outstanding fall (16-5 record), during which he captured the singles title of the Thunderbird Invitational and reached the quarterfinals of the National Clay Court Championships. But injuries were also a nemesis for Combette this spring, as he struggled to an 18-19 overall record for the year.
In doubles, State had two teams ranked Friday. Baron and Chris McDonald finished 14th in the country. They went 9-4 overall with six wins over ranked foes (four in the top 15) and reached the round of 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship. McDonald was also ranked with senior Mathieu Soto at No. 48. That duo qualified for both Collegiate Grand Slam events in the fall and had four ranked victories during the year.
"We are extremely proud of our positions in the final rankings," MSU head coach Andy Jackson said. "We had a great season and many outstanding accomplishments during the year.
"I am also very happy that Marco finished No. 1. He is very deserving to join that group of elite players that we have had hold that prestigious national position."

The Lady Bulldog netters qualified for the NCAA Team Championship this season and advanced to the second round of the national championship for the third year in a row, defeating Ohio State in the first round. MSU finished strong in 2001, winning four of its last seven matches, with all three losses coming to top 5 opponents.
Individually, Detriviere ended the season ranked 92nd in the country in singles. She posted four wins over nationally-ranked players during the year and reached the quarterfinals of two fall tournaments. The Bressuire, France, native, a three-time Academic all-SEC selection and ITA Scholar-Athlete, stands seventh on State's all-time singles wins list with 61 career victories.
"We were very pleased with our season," MSU head coach Tracy Lane said. "We played well at the end of the year when it was most important, and did well in both the SEC and NCAA Tournaments.
"Amelie had a great career at MSU and we are very proud of what she contributed to our team both on and off the court."

The Clinton, Miss., native clocked an 11.70 mark to finish third in her heat and earn a shot for all-America honors in Saturday afternoon's finals.
The top four from each heat advanced to Saturday's final at the University of Oregon-hosted meet. Harper's time ranked her sixth overall for the two semifinal heats, and she joined LSU's Muna Lee and Mississippi's Teneeshia Jones as the lone SEC representatives to advance out of Friday's semis.
Harper will not be the lone MSU athlete competing Saturday at Hayward Field. Senior Vance Clarke makes his final triple jump appearance for head coach Al Schmidt's Bulldogs during the final day of action at the 2001 NCAA championship meet.
